Note: a girdle is a band around the middle of a waist or trunk, while a garter is a band around the leg or arm to hold one's stockings or sleeves up. Still some girdles also hold stockings up. Melian's Girdle was a band around Doriath to keep stock, kings, and your ordinary riffraff out of Thingol's Woodland Kingdom.
