I found that Tolkien used the name of the Persian King Xerxes in letter #52 written to his son Christopher on 29 November 1943 when the eighteen year old was training in a camp after joining the RAF earlier that summer.

(I posted the above, or words to that effect Saturday, but the system ate them, as well as all the posts I made that day.)
