Brilliant idea! Would have been an awfully short and dull book though 
Also, maybe nobody trusted the Eagles with the ring in the first place, and maybe it would have been a bit difficult for a huge Eagle to get through Sammath Naur in to the cracks of doom?

if the bird brains are too small, gandalf could have easily gone on gwaihir's back and dropped it in to the mountain himself.
but Gandalf wouldn't have taken the ring in the first place...and I think it's beyond anybody's power to willingly drop the ring into the mountain...it took Gollum's falling in to get it there

I still don't see any solution in the birds thing. As someone said: it would have taken a lot of courage from anyone to throw the thing in. Ooooh!!! The solution: Bombabil on the back of an eagle, throwing the ring in! Cos the power of the Ring doesn't grow on him!!!

Well if you forgot there was.......ummm a HUGE battle going on at the time. The actions of frodo and Sam led up to this. If the eagles just flew there then Sauron or the Nazgul on their winged deamons might have opposed them. Also the story would be to short.
It's already too short, what would have been if the eagles had thrown the Ring in from the start?? Good point, Longbow, good point.
