It was announced today that at last they are releasing the trilogy on high definition Blu-Ray and I wrote in the blog post here[/url:2tebykel] that I would be ordering despite the fact it will be the theatrical release.

Having already purchased about 4 copies of each over the years though I'm now reconsidering. The extended versions will be released to coincide with the cinema release of The Hobbit and I know for a fact I'll be buying those so I'm thinking I ought to wait.

Who am I kidding. Soon as its released I'll be buying
When is it coming out on Blu-Ray. bought a blu-ray 6 months ago (very expensive) just 4 lotr. Still no sign. getting cheesed off. :?: :?: :x :x

Due out this Summer but you're right, it seems to have been a while a go since it was announced.
Whos summer? i live in australia, my summers 6months away.
Just found this. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />

Release date November 3rd. look at last post <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> . still 4months away <img src='/images/smileys/sad.gif' border='0' alt='Sad Smilie' />
It's now delayed[/url:3bmikq52] until sometime in 2010 (at least), "probably" in March.

Anyway, even if I had a Blu-ray I'd probably not buy the Theatrical cut. Frankly I think it's vastly inferior to the Extended Edition, plus by the time the EEs come out I might have something I can play them on.
Well nov 3rd been and gone. stil no sign. any one no. thought i was going to get a christmas present i actually liked, but not to be.  :?:
See my last post for what is (as far as I know) the latest about LOTR Blu-ray. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
See my last post for what is (as far as I know) the latest about LOTR Blu-ray. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />[/quote:1fgpcgr7]

Thanks Eldorion. Chrismas has now been cancelled.   <img src='/images/smileys/sad.gif' border='0' alt='Sad Smilie' />
Not March now, but April.[/url:3up4im1j] At least it's a concrete date. On the other hand, it's only the Theatrical releases (followed by [i:3up4im1j]Bakshi[/i:3up4im1j]'s film a week later  ). Even if I had a Blu-ray player, I'm less than enthused until the EEs come out.

That said, seven hours of bonus features intrigue me.
Aaaaaand there's also a trailer on Blu-ray.com[/url:1fvf0g0c].
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndddddd it's not like there's better films to buy on beta max
April 6th. cant wait. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
cant believe the extras are not in blu-ray. Got all the extras on normal DVD
so why would i want the same again. Sure 99% of people who are going to buy lotr on Blu-ray have it on DVD. This is a rip off. was hoping for better. Its a pity Bilbo didnt kill the greedy bast***s when he had the chance. Its pity that stayed bilbo's hand,..... and so on :x :x   .
so why would i want the same again.[/quote:1bf1yxo2]

I think the point of the Blu-ray release is the film itself, not the extras. Most people probably don't watch the extras anyway.

I'm still waiting for the EEs to come out. To watch the TEs, even on Blu-ray, after seeing the EEs so many times would feel like a step backward. Call me spoiled. :P
I agree Eldo. It seems like a Rip-Off to entice people to buy the TE's before they release the EE's (and they can't even put in the extras??? talk about CHEAP).

[b:3rc09kt2]GB[/b:3rc09kt2]
i like the extras. think iv watched the extras on the ee even more then the movies.
sounds silly but true. love all that making of stuff. Cant wait another 2 years for ee on blu-ray. i want it now. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
I seriously doubt that the EE bonus features will be in HD. It'd be cool if they were I suppose, though I wonder just how different Blu-ray is from DVD. I've heard varying the quality but people I've talked to generally seem to think it's not much better than DVD.

chris63 - you might not have to wait that long[/url:qvbwdwse]. Then again, they might change their minds again.
It depends on the quality of your HD TV. 720P and 1080P are vastly superior to standard TV line and pixel ratios. The clarity is unbelievable. So far, Blu Ray is the only DVD format to support 1080P (especially as it beat out Hi Def DVDs in the format war).

So as long as you have a TV which will support Blu Ray, you will have image quality that is noticeably superior to standard DVD.

I hear buying a used Playstation 3 is the cheapest way to get a Blu Ray player. Though one can now get a Blu Ray player for about $300-400 apparently.

We got an HDTV about a year ago, we just don't have any HD stuff to play on it. Your post encourages me though, GB; I'll have to see about getting Blu-ray at some point before the EEs come out.
Just watched Final Fantasy on blu-ray. picture and sound were brilliant.
Cant wait for LOTR. Pity the nabours. gona give it some serious volume.

looks good.
Been posted already, in this very thread! <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />

I'm not sure how "glorious" Bakshi's "animation" will be though.
Glorious to those of us that actually like Bakshi's film :P .

[b:2hobw3x4]GB[/b:2hobw3x4]
How eye-popping will it be to see such vomit-tinged frames in high-definition? :P

(All meant in good fun, I hope I do not offend anyone.)
I thought Bakshis film was good when it came out. Went to see it every day for the first week it was out.
Loved the bit where Frodo got pinned by that orc thrown spear. All in slowmotion aswell in the mines of Moria.
The Balrog looked a bit silly. looked like a lion with wings.
Realy liked the song sung by the Elves in Lothlorien when they hear of gandalfs death. 8-)
Thank Goddess. Someone else agrees with me for a change (re: Bakshi's film) .

About the only thing that seemed a little off to me was Aragorn as a "Native American". Otherwise, pure Psychedelic Genius.

Which Goddess was that?
Take your pick <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> .

I'm still hoping to get my own copy of Blu-Ray soon. Thanks for the keep it touch guys.

bit more info.
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/04 ... -releases/
Still havnt got it yet. not released till 15th april here in Auz.
Anyone watched it yet?
So Bakshi's film comes out on Blu-ray today. I wonder if they took the opportunity to finish animating the film. :P

Chris: I haven't seen it, and probably won't, unless someone I know secretly has a Blu-ray player and a hundred bucks to spare. Otherwise I'll wait till the EEs come out to (a) pay for them and (b) bug my family about getting a Blu-ray player.
just read sum reviews on amazon and they reckon its awsome, especialy the audio. Cant wait till thursday. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
Funny, Amazon users gave it 1 and 1/2 stars as far as I can see. That said, I've heard good things about the picture and audio quality, the reviewers there just seem annoyed at the corporate double-dipping.
didnt we all buy the theatrical version of lotr on dvd knowing the ee was coming out later?
we could be waiting 2 more years for ee on bluray, sorry i cant wait that long.
8.30am tomorrow i will be at the shops buying it. Thanks Eldoron for reminding me about
the animated version. almost forgot about it
$70 not to bad, just wont go to the pub this friday. will save another $100.
might even buy 2 copies. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
didnt we all buy the theatrical version of lotr on dvd knowing the ee was coming out later?[/quote:38amlymj]

I didn't, but then again, I was a bit young to be buying DVDs then. :P I'm going to wait for the EEs on Blu-ray and will probably do the same for The Hobbit. I have other things to spend money on than multiple copies of the same movie. But, of course, to each his own. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
Review
http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2313/lo ... ilogy.html
A very interesting review, chris. The points about picture quality are disappointing to me. I've read a few others (and part of the discussion thread on HDD) and it's clear that there are mixed opinions on the picture quality, but even the positive reviewers tend to agree that it's inconsistent in places. Maybe this is me, but consistent picture quality (and un-ruined SFX) are more important than a few very crisp shots.

I also appreciated the reminder that the [i:28ionta8]standard[/i:28ionta8] definition bonus features don't even include all of the features from the EE. Could it be any more obvious that this is double-dipping?
Definitely another indication to wait for the Blu Ray EE's. Hopefully by then they will have sorted out some of the inconsistencies.

[b:2jzd5e7l]GB[/b:2jzd5e7l]
Just watched all 3 films 7pm till 4am. Audio was great, picture quality, well with the fellowship not that much different
Two towers was better and trotk was better still. I didnt get the setbox couldnt find it, so i got them individuelly. no
extras just a couple of movie trailers and they were the same on each disc. Think the EE virsions are going to be realy
big and have even more extended bits. (i hope) :P :P
I'm glad you finally got your preciousssssssssssss Blu-rays, chris.
I didnt get the setbox couldnt find it, so i got them individuelly.[/quote:38jurjhx]

I thought they were only sold as a set. Out of curiosity, where do you live? I'm in the US, so if you're elsewhere that may explain the difference (or maybe I'm just confuddled).

[quote:38jurjhx]Think the EE virsions are going to be realy

Do you mean more extra features or that the films proper will be even longer?
From Perth Australia Eldorion. Odo's nieghbour thou theres 4000miles between us.

Do you mean more extra features or that the films proper will be even longer?

So i'v heard, but that could be wishful thinking :P
Actually, I thought the problem was that there was MORE character development than there was in the books <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> (following logically on many of the "purist" arguments, particularly in regard to Aragorn and Faramir).

All kidding aside, I totally disagree that the films were unbalanced in favour of excessive CGI. The CGI and special effects were brilliant and effective but clearly in service to the story and characters rather than the reverse. If there are any more extended sequences in future editions of the films, I wouldn't be averse to more effects sequences, as well as character interaction.

I do agree with you in general though Petty. CGI and Special Effects without a good story or characters can be tedious at times, but it rather depends on how well done the action sequences are. I can totally enjoy a crap film plot if the action is well filmed.

[b:3d947tzu]GB[/b:3d947tzu]
Sadly there's no such thing. After a while it all just becomes so much "meh who cares". Films should be centred around story and character with the special effects supporting them. To much of LoTR was just a case of "see what we can do" often at the expense of leaving too little room for the actual plot and character development of the books.
I hadn't heard that. I'm sure they have even more old footage lying around, but they have come out with so many versions of the film so far that another full edition would be excessive, in my opinion. Especially for the already 250-minute ROTK.
I havent' been sold on the need for Blue-ray and from the posts I've read here I'm in no rush- seems only the EE will be worth the money, I can't believe theyve gone for theatrical and EE versions again- that's low.
On the point of the films being even more extended- in the commentary on fellowship on dvd EE they mention that they shot a lot more of Boromir's speech when he confronts Frodo and tries to 'persuade' him to hand over the Ring- this was always one of my favourite bits in the book and I thought Sean Bean was a good Boromir, so I'm hoping the longer version of that scene might be in the blue-ray versions (it always bugged me they had shot it but not put it in the EE dvd's). What I'd not like to see is just more effects and even longer battles- that would be a cop out- give me character stuff any day over yet more boring CGI.
