By the way, is there any mentioning from tolkien what lays beyond the borders of ME? or is that just it? the 'world' surrounded by seas?
Well Tolkien always saw Middle-Earth as our own mythic past. So there should be the equivalent of all the present continents on Tolkien's world.
This leads me to think that that the land the Elves came from beyond the Western Sea would relate to Avalon or Atlantis. In other words one could probably only get there through some kind of magical or dimensional portal as it would be unlikely that the Elves came from the Americas. Perhaps Tolkien had some idea that the Elves came from a "real" lost Continent in the middle of the Atlantic or perhaps as I suggested from another plane of our reality.
As to "new" Pipeweeds, I think the Hobbits actually enjoy trying new things to eat and smoke
(just as the English like their curries). I also think they enjoy stories about adventures, they just enjoy the comforts of home too much to have them themselves.

Gandalf's Beard. Valinor wasn't the land of the elves, it was the land of the Valar. The elves were born to the same continent as men. It just looked different because there was no sun or moon. That and geography of Middle Earth changed a few times: After the destruction of the lamps; after the first chaining of Melkor; and the Akallabeth or fall of Numenor. [i:1hhw4zsr]I may have missed another change, I think there is another, but I just can't think of it now, if it exists.[/i:1hhw4zsr] The issue at hand in the early mythology of Tokien's world was that it was indeed flat.
Past Valinor to the west was the end of the world. Period. We can all turn back now. It was during the Breaking of the world and the fall of Numenor that things changed. When Ar-Pharazon stepped foot on Valinor with the intent of war, the Valar laid down their control of Middle-Earth and put matters in the hands of Eru. Eru remade the world. One thing he did as well was reshape the world and remove Valinor. After this sailors of Arnor and Gondor attempted to sail back to the west. Only to find themselves back home again, and they knew that now Eru had made the world a sphere.
I don't remember (I'll have to check later) if it hints that the Americas were created at this time, or were just the original "very" far east. If you have never read the entire Silmarillion but own it or can get it at a Library. Read the last two parts, Akallebeth and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age. Short reading that really is very nice.

And then, while Gandalfs Beard (I dearly hope you'll come up with a better hobbit name ^^) and me are smoking some of the best pipe weed from the South Farthing, enjoying us some freshly baked pie from the bakery in Michel Delving, the messenger comes ridding up our road. Wishes us a Good Day, for a good day it is... And while we offer him some tea and pie, we would read your letter...

Your fantasy scenario made me think though. I've always wondered what Asia looked like in the third age. We only get to see Europe and the mediterannean region on the map of Middle Earth. How cool would it be to be the Marco Polos of Eriador
. We could bring back new varieties of Pipe-Weed, learn new languages and converse with Oriental Wizards, make new maps...

Simple question, if you would live in Middle-Earth, where would you live, or where would you want to live? what kind of creature would you want to be? and what would be your daily business?
Mine is as followes:
I would live among the race of men, In Eriador, the North Kingdom or Arnor, near chetwood and bree, I would be a hunter, living in a small community. We would work the land, trade with the people from evendim, bree, and hobbits from hobbiton. I would travel to rivendell, misty mountains, lake evendim, and sometimes when we couldn't find food anywhere and we would be in the most dire need of it, and our crops would have failed, we would hunt in the old forrest.. We would trade pipeweed with the hobbits and wooden furniture with the people from bree, juwelery with the elves from rivendell...
Travelling would be easy beacause the great east road is easy to travell by Horse.. which ofcourse would be dark brown..
main weapon would be a bow, made by the elves.. If we travel we would travel cloaked and hooded.. but always in peace with other creatures and people..
Would love to see some more fantasies!!

Well, I suppose I would love to live in the Shire myself--enjoying the sedentary life. Though Rivendell would be pretty sweet too. I think I would probably be a Hobbit Wizard (if such a thing were possible
). I would grow *ahem* Pipe-Weed of a sticky green variety and Magic Mushrooms
for use in...erm...magic. I would travel and visit with Elves and other Wizards discussing Magic and Philosophy over big bowls of Pipe-Weed

I can't imagine many places in Middle Earth I'd like to live. No computers- I couldn't write or play games or waste my time on internet chat boards.
It'd be cool to be an elf, but with my luck I'd probably end up as a goblin or a neekerbreek or something.
That's why I would have to be a Wizard Barrel

I think I would have to be an elf. Mostly wandering, but keeping close ties with Elrond in Rivendell and Cirdan at the havens. After the war of the ring I would make my ways into the east to see what there is to see. Who knows, maybe the entwives are still out there somewhere.
For heritage though, I would rather be a reminant of Doriath, one of the Teleri, instead of one of the Noldor. They just have too much elf blood on their hands. This includes Galadriel. That and because of all the crap the Noldor brought on themselves, they seem depressed. As a former resident of Doriath, which was destroyed for greed, I would be sad, but not depressed. Besides, it was the doom of the Noldor that doomed Doriath.
Sorry for all the Silmarillion references, I just love the ME history.
I, for one, can't handle unfinished maps. Maybe in Tolkien's mythology the world was once flat, but didn't you say it was round before the third age Show?
My Hobbit Wizard would be driven to map out the rest of the continent if not the world.
And there is an awful lot of doom and gloom in Middle Earth's history. That's why my home-base would have to be someplace cheerful like the Shire, or peaceful like Rivendell. And I would prefer to live in the most peaceful time period...probably some time in the middle of the third age.

Absolutley GB. Fill out that map. The world has been round since the foundation of Arnor and Gondor. So, if instead of travelling you might be able to imerse yourself in the libraries of Gondor to find Maps already made by sailors.
So you would be quite Tookish eh? Messing about with boats?
I would be careful on the seas during the third age. Umbar shifts from Gondorian to Cosair control throughout the age. Is there any generation in our histories or Middle Earth who has never seen war? Perhaps, but my knowledge knows of none.

Id be a harpist in the fair sea-side city of of Dol Amroth during the War of the Rings. When Eowyn and Faramir settled in Ithilien, Id travel to play in their court.
At least thats where Id [i:23hpz6zq]like[/i:23hpz6zq] to be. If I got just assigned a role in the world by chance, there are a lot of people Id really not like to be. I bet a HUGE chunk of the population are orcs (eww).

There are so many places I'd want to live and things I'd want to be! So I'll just give my first few choices:
1. I would be an elf-maiden living in Rivendell. However, I would still go on quests and such, even as a girl. But that would be awesome to sit in the Hall of Fire every night, with songs and tales ( such as Frodo describes it in FotR). I think I would be a messenger, so that I could travel a lot and have adventures (but not too much). I would go and visit Lothlorien, too.
2. I would be a maiden warrior of Rohan, much like Eowyn- she is my Hero! Maybe I could be a descendent of her, although I don't think I would want to live in that age when all the elves are leaving Middle-Earth. Anyway, I would live just out of Edoras, on the banks of the Entwash, and maybe ride with the rohirrim, if they would let a girl in.
3. I would be a hobbit, smoking pipes and eating seven solid meals a day. I think I would go on an adventure sometime, but a small one. I would live in Buckland and venture into the Old Forest, and maybe live in Brandybuck hall.
I could think of a million more lives I would lead in ME, so I'd better stop now. All I can say, is I wouldn't want to live near Mordor, or in Rohan when they're being attacked and have to go to Helm's Deep.
Maybe we should make a forum for sharing different worlds with each other ?
We have already shared art and such, but as far as I know, we have not a forum for entire magic fantasy-worlds. I'm sure many of us have our own little world, at least I know I do.

You are right about Wizards in Middle Earth as a general rule Ramli, but in my version (in my own mind
), anyone can study and learn to use magic. But of course such "Wizards" wouldn't be in the same class of being as the Maiar.

Gandalf's beard, i dont think you could be a hobbit wizard - correct me if im wrong - but im pretty sure that wizards were actually Maiar - not men or any other race - which are lesser Ainur. Each of the Maiar was associated with one or more particular Valar for example: Curumo, who came to be known in Middle-earth as Saruman, belonged to Aul’ the Smith.
but i supose he could be some magical being like galadriel whom i dont think is a Maia.
as for what i would like to be. i recon it would be fun to be evil for a change. i would probably want to be a balrog serving under the dark lord Melkor.
The Balrogs were, like Sauron, Maiar corrupted by Melkor. Their associated Vala is not known
and if i was to be someone of good heart I would probably be a dwarf called "Ramli" the dwarf kings son who weilds a battle axe called "Bloodfire".
this axe is magical, controlled by a large bright ruby in the center. this gemstone has a mind of its own and is magical, being able to manipulate and create fire (this is where where it got its name from). Bloodfire is a good friend of ramli and has seen many battles, the head of the battle axe is constantly alight with red fire and the blade is a dark metallic red.
ramli himself is actually not that smart but bloodfire does all the thinking for him so no need to worry. ramli is of good heart and he seems to have an obbsession with killing orks (what he does in his spare time) and other evil things that he comes across.
ramlis pet and only travel companion is a wargwolf (half wolf, half warg and large enough to ride on. similar to a small horse in size) called Varnielic whos fur is also a dark metallic red and glossy black. Varnielics teeth are a dark metallic purple and his favourite food is ork meat. Varnielic is also ramlis steed.
Ramli would live somewhere near the lonely mountain or in some vast caves built by dwarves. ramli loves adventuring and wandering around middle earth
PS. Ramli is actually a character which i hav actually created (as well as bloodfire and Varnielic) in a world of my own (i forget the name - my friend has the notebook with all the information and maps we've created). this land has a lot of influence from tolkien but it is set in a totally different world with some new races which have been added in and many other of my own original ideas.
But wouldn't it be possible for a Maia to come in a Hobbit's body? I mean, they come in the form of old men just as a front. They need some physical form.

Another possibility for study of magic:
Look at the Witchking. I imagine with Valar/Mair influence, mortal can become magic wielders. I also got the impression he was a magician of sorts, or sorcerer. They just didn't call them "Wizards" per se.
So you could be a Hobbit "Sorcerer". Now bless my beer!

I believe that a Hobbit wizard would have a sort of a 'credibility' problem. The 'wise old man' is a widely used form in many mythologies. Imagine "Odin" to be a hobbit? It is a good question, but I guess it is the old mythologies from outside Middle-earth that have brought in elements known to us that give the answers.
As for where in ME I would live - probably I would live in Beornings country. I'm not a very social person and tend to prefer the green area and love to see mountains, but not so much tempted to go and live in them.
Hi guys! Haven't been here in awhile, have been on vacation. My ultimate fantasy would be to be a Maiar who uses the Elements such as Earth, Fire, Water, and Air for his magical energies. But, since all of the Maiar have entered Middle Earth, and I don't think the Valar are planning on making any Maiar/Lesser Powers any time soon. So as I said that would be my ultimate fantasy, especially to be in the Society of the Istari

Well, if none of that was possible, I would either like to be a Dwarf or a Hobbit. If I were either of them, I would like to be an Elf-Friend, such as Gimli and Bilbo. Even though I would not want to be an Elf myself, I find them interesting, and wise.
If I were a Dwarf I would live my life in The Iron Hills, or Moria, which will perhaps be restored in the early Fourth Age, which would be the time when I was born in both cases. I would journey to Rivendell, The Shire, perhaps stay at The Prancing Pony in Bree, wherever my feet may take my plump body, I would follow the road that goes ever, ever on.
. I would live a very Dwarven life and live happily ever after, going on adventure after adventure, but always heading back to the home for some stout Ale and merriment with my fellow Dwarves

If I were a Hobbit I would either live in Hobbiton or in Buckland, either would be fine for me. Practically anywhere in The Shire, really, though. Choosing my Hobbit life, I may go on, [i:155lxqhg]not adventures[/i:155lxqhg], but journeys around the Shire and surrounding areas. Perhaps in my 40's (Hobbit Years) I would venture out to the Mountains, and visit where the legendary Frodo and Bilbo took some of their journeys. At the end of my days, I would return from my previous journey, and come back to my little Hobbit hole and enjoy some nice hot tea, and forever retire from Middle-Earth, waiting until I am awakened to my new life above.

Not all Maiar come in the form of an Old man, Saruman and Gandalf were just put in the form of an old man to constrain there power, and their Mortal form of an old man would lessen their power, they are restrained to what an old man can do.
Saruman and Gandalf are two of the most powerful Maiar, I believe, which is why they are put in that form. Just my opinion on that.

I find this quite hysterical, because Tolkien was not in the rustic places of England in his life, but in the cities, and I suppose that the City Folk of England have greater imagination then the Rustic folk of England, eh? Well, makes sense as he wrote the most epicly awesome High Fantasy story the world has come to know, and some other rustic Englishman didn't. . . of course, this is all in my opinion

Yes, well Tolkien was known to be a bit schizoid on the topic of Hobbits reflecting certain aspects of the British country-folk, being a lover of all green growing things himself
. He was essentially remarking on the insularity of small rural communities in that quote. Yet he also endowed certain favoured Hobbits with a Wizardish (Scientific?) curiosity about the world around them which set them a bit apart from the rest of their community. Being a Brit (and a Gemini
) with a foot in both camps I share that dualism, the tug from both extremes: the love of Good Food and Home and Hearth--and the Transcendent Adventure of the Unknown, Magic, and the Imagination. Hence, I am a Hobbit Wizard

I suppose everyone has some role they would like to play in a story. It seems everytime I read any of the LOTR trilogy I come up with another fantasy, spur-of-the-moment revelation of some character I'd like to be.
However, my very first was to be an elf, so to the woods for me! I would live in Greenwood (a.k.a. Mirkwood before the 'mirk')....(if my limited appendix knoweledge is correct

Second is a hobbit (in the shire of course) because who doesn't love a good meal?

Well, I would choose to be a Dwarf/Istari because in both worlds, The real World we live in today, and the mythological world of Middle Earth, I would want to be remembered. Even though this may seem like a greedy wish, when I die, I want to leave my mark in this world, I don't want to be swept away and only remembered by my family for only a few generations, I want to be remembered for such things as Acting, Creating such inventions as Edison did, Writing, the list goes on. Yes, yes, I am quite a little dreamer, eh?

I like it, but whatever. I would want to be a Dwarf or an Istari in the world of Middle-Earth because they have a much larger chance of going down in the History books then a Hobbit does. At least. . . in most occasions.

Well, Dwarves are not mentioned in the Actual Trilogy as much as I should like, as much as they are in The Hobbit, and in the Silmarillion, and other Tolkien-inspired historical documents. And, Jackson practically swept all involvement of the Dwarves away from the Movie, and just consolidated it down to Gimli, which I suppose was a great help after all. Not to down the Hobbits at all, but I think the Dwarves just don't get enough credit.
. Either way, Gimli still lives in my heart. *cue the Audience Awing*.
Actually LITD, I agree. I would have liked to see more Dwarf involvement in both the books and the films (I love Dwarves). So it will be nice to see them in The Hobbit.

I look forward to all the Dwarfs too. But I have to admit, I'm glad they didn't try to include more about them in the LotR books and films. There was more than enough characters and story to fill those pages. Just a Token reference to them through Gimli was enough to keep readers up on the fact that there are more "good" people in the world.
Awwww, Show. It would have been brilliant to see a battalion of Dwarves arriving at Helms Deep too. Jackson pulled it off excellently with the Elves. That would have been a cool addition too.

Gimli hanging with other dwarves would have killed the line. Not to mention "Don't tell the elf".
With the hobbits you get the fish out of water for untrained unexperienced travellers. Gilmi was nice because he has seen and done much, but with all his skills he was still out of his element.

But I guess its still higher than England but I am known to be a dunce at geography so....
I would be an elf of Rivendell, or maybe half elven. Rivendell is peaceful and isn't troubled by the outside world. I'd probably use a bow (cuz archery is da bomb!) I guess I'd be a writer of sorts, recording events in history so they aren't forgotten. Being immortal, i'd travel to almost every place in middle earth, learning and recording history.

I cherish being near woods and mountains. So I could easily see myself living somewhere between the Hoarwell and the Misty Mountains. On the other hand, that area is very dangerous and I love good food. So I might settle for Chetwood or some other place closer to the Shire.
I think i would like to a ranger in Arnor, just before the War of the Ring, always battling the servants of Mordor and joining up with Aragorn with the rest of the Grey company.
Provided i lived through that little jaunt i would then retire to live in The Prancing Pony in Bree smoking pipeweed and boring travellers with my war stories.
The Shire. Somewhere in tookland.. I would be a traveling entertainer wandering from Inn to Inn in the Shire. WHen I am done with my travels, I would sit at home and knit, and tell stories. I see myself as a schenacie/bard of sorts.. Singing songs, telling stories.. Kind of like Sam Gamgee...
I see myself as a Took, cause I do unexpected things at times.
Possibly, I would wander out of the shire, and establish myself in Staddle, or Bree-town.. being an entertainer at the Prancing Pony, the Mad Badger (Archet) or The Comb and Wattle (Combe)
Bree-town would be the most fun, being at a crossroads on the Greenway and the East Road... plus it would give me a chance to socialize with all races of the Free Peoples.
I wonder if that house in Crickhollow might be available - and would those hot baths still be there? Now that would be living!
