Sorry I can`t answer this question for you. Better luck next time. Wink Smilie
Tar-Aldarion: Do you mean this one?

It could be Feanor holding the silmarils, or maybe Eru holding Arda.

(Grondy edited this post because the lenthy url made the format go haywire; however, the url turned out to be out dated or something.)
As the title is the Silmarillion, and the picture seems to depict three lights within the glare, I'd guess it is Feanor holding the three silmarills.
If that is the cover picture in question, then I agree.

I thought we also had the picture of the first edition jacket in our book covers collection, but I couldn't find it there or on any other site. Haven't even seen the artwork from the Ballentine LotR paperback editions of the late sixties that also happens to grace their $2.95 1967 hardcover edition of The Road Goes Ever On. which on my copy is starting to look a little worse for wear.
If you are referring to the one Allyssa has provided the link for then I agree that it is probably Feanor.
The illustration was done by Michael Dringenberg, DC comic book illustrator and better known for his artwork in the Sandman books by Neil Gaiman.
My copy of the Silmarillion has the pic in Allyssa's link on the cover, and I have always thought that it was supposed to be Feanor holding the 3 Silmarills as well.

This is quite similar to the cover of my copy of the Sil. It's the first paperback printing of the Ballantine Books edition (this page loads rather slowly, so if you wanna see you should click and then go make yourself a sandwich er somethin' ):

Rather ugly, eh? Very Mad Smilie

I believe this may be the dust jacket of the hardcover while mine is paperback. They're almost identical except that the title is not within the picture but directly below the postAuthorIDs name above the picture.

Above that, it says "America's #1 bestseller! One million sold in Hardcover!" Orc With Thumbs Up Smilie

I couldn't find the paperback cover ANYWHERE! Mad Smilie

Anyway, the cover and the binding are disintegrating but the text is unmarked. It's really time I get a new copy Big Laugh Smilie
Yep, that's it!!!

Feanor really look liked a girl there. I suppose that all elves love that long-haired look.
My front cover's quite cool it's the fall of Gondolin with loads of orcs, dragons and balrogs(with wings) plus a really sinister looking dude on a horse.
My Silmarillion cover has some sort of city, and a guy standing on the stairs, i have no idea who that is,,,

I dunno if someone has that one(i think it's a paperback) .

Anyways, i hope someone know who that tiny dude on the city staires is.

my guess is that the city is gondolin, and the tiny dude is Tuor, or maybe Glorfindel. Or maybe it's the city of Tirion, and the tiny dude is Earendil, is he glowing silver?
My copy depicts the Children of Eru enjoying the coast, probably for the first time. Languidly lounging about the beach in the nighttime. It's quite nice.

Anyhow later...
I think that's meant to be lake cuivienen!
My copy of Silmarillion shows the white city with two dragons in the foreground and mountains in a strange orange colour in the background.. what's that supposed to be??
Accually, he isn't glowing, he is just sorta, i guess standing -looking at the sky or tower or something. You can only see his back, like he is back to you.

I'm thinking, that he might not even be too significant, or if he is, it could be anyone- since all you see is a black figure of someone standing back to you.(plus, it's rather small)

My copy of the Silmarillion depics Gondolin and the Urulóki about to sack Gondolin!
In the Italian version it is a picture of the silmarills on Morgoths crown on his head.....

Airecristiel, the orange looking side of the mountain is the sun rising and lighting up Gondolin... I got the same picture. First I thought it was Gondolin in flames but that was just the first glimpse of it.I know now that it is the sunlight that makes that orange color on the mountain side. a very beautiful picture is what I think of it!
All that I've got on mine is a plain blue cover with a picture of some sort of symetrical flower Sad Smilie Very boring compared to the wonderful covers all of you appear to have.
Yes but that means your cover was designed by Tokien himself!

Yes, but it is the old version, the new edition has a picture with a landscape with some trees and hills......... beautiful but it isn't a painting that was made for a Tolkien's book in particular..... I prefere the paintings by Howe, Lee or Nasmith

Yup thats really great artists! Big Smile Smilie but my favourite artist is John Howe!

Yep all the covers where they're circles with designs inside them are Tolkien's own artwork.
The covers I have seen featured for the Silmarillion are:

The Elves awakening at Cuiviénen and seeing the stars (Nasmith)
The destruction of Númenor (Sweet)
Fëanor and the Silmarilli (Dringenberg)
Maglor throwing a Silmaril into the Sea (Nasmith)
The Tree of Amalion (Tolkien)
Túrin and his men going to Amon Rudh (Nasmith)
The fall of Gondolin (Howe)
Taniquetil (Tolkien)
The sea (Nasmith)
Eärendil the mariner (Nasmith)
Morgoth punishing Húrin (Nasmith)
Maedhros being rescued from Thangorodrim (Nasmith)
The Eagles of Manwë (Nasmith)
The Ships of the Faithful (Nasmith)
Ulmo and Tuor (Nasmith)
Finduilas, Túrin, and the Destruction of Nargothrond (Nasmith)
The light of Valinor on the Western Sea (Nasmith)
Fingolfin leading a host across the Helcaraxë (Nasmith)
The first Day of the Sun (Nasmith)
Felagund and the Men of Bëor (Nasmith)
The lamp of the Valar (Nasmith)
Lúthien escaping upon Huan (Nasmith)
Eöl and Aredhel (Nasmith)
Moonlight in Neldoreth Forest (Nasmith)

Personally, I like the Tree of Amalion (??) and the Ships of the Faithful best; Tolkien's Taniquetil is also good.

Snap!

I have that one too.

Front Cover - Luthien Tinuviel - circle with white flowers

Back Cover - Fingolfin, Earendil, Idril Celebrindal, Elwe, Feanor -4 diamond shapes with emblems inside and one circle with emblem.
This bites! I've got two copies of The Silmarillion and both have the same boring cover from the original print back in 1974. It's the one that's entirely white and in the center, there is an unattractive depiction of a mountain pass with lightning in the background. I want the cool covers! Sad Smilie
