Liv does fit the part well, it is just that we geeks didn't feel the part was that neccesary to be expanded upon at Glorfindel's expense. That is really our complaint against her. Liv makes a lovely Arwen. Happy Elf Smilie
I remember when I first saw "Armegeddon" (with Bruce Willis) that the girl who played Willis' daughter would make a perfect Arwen.

Seems like at least one movie producer agreed with me. Big Smile Smilie
Hey I am right with you Eloynn, I think Liv Tyler played a great Arwen. And I really don't have any problems with the changes about Arwen in the movie.
To pretty much echo everything that's been said already...it's not the portrayal of Arwen that has many of us in a twist...it's her extended role. Personally, I was way against it to begin with, but after having seen the second movie, I don't really mind that much. Liv Tyler does a really great job, though.
You know, I recently read a magazine interview with Liv and the thing she talked about the most in regards to the movie was how hurt she was by initial reactions to her recieving the role.

Before the FOTR was released, when people heard that Liv was to play Arwen, lots of people on the internet criticised the choice, with comments like she is "too Hollywood" (she had never been to Hollywood) and was a spoiled daughter of a rich muso (She didnt even know who her father was until she was 10). A lot of people wanted Catherine Zeta Jones for the role - now she IS Hollywood, and in my opinion, is way to sassy for the role.

Liv Tyler did Arwen better than I would have thought possible for any mortal, and I approved of her for the part right from the beginning (as I mentioned above).

I hope Liv reads this thread. She deserves to know what a great job she did, and how much she is appreciated by the Fans. I would join her fan club myself, but it seems the vast majority of other members are male. Big Laugh Smilie

I liked Liv as Arwen, I liked the flight to the ford, Glorfindel would not have looked as good. I thought the changes made to fit Arwen in were d@mn good. So shoot me.
Your not on your own. I think Liv Tyler was almost excellent for the part! Thumbs Up Smilie
I think she the Elvish laguage very well!I also liked the way she acted. Tongue Smilie
Ah, thanks for all your comments, can you tell that i posted that thread on new years eve, and was slightly tipsy which accounts for my really bad English. I did like the character of Glorfindel and can understand what you mean but from reading some of the comments anti liv in some of the threads, i thought am i really naff or did I think she was'nt that bad. I can understand why people wants the films to match the books, I was the same at first, but couldn't the films add to the books?
Smile Smilie I too liked Arwen and I don't see what the big deal was all about. It's not her fault that she took over other caracters parts.
Did you know P.J. actually made the choice to give her more roles when the movie was already under production?
So, I wonder if someone WAS going to play that glorifendel(sp?) dude origanally!

Yes indeed! Woody Allen, but he had to bow out at the last moment when he found his analyst wouldn't not be able to accompany him to NZ.

(And if you believe that, I've still got that bridge in Brooklyn that is for sale.) Elk Grinning Smilie
If PJ didn't let Arwen show up at the Ford and doing that stupid horse-back riding and sword pulling, i would have liked Arwen in the movies. If PJ did the Arwen stuff like in the books, i really would have liked Arwen.

But since Arwen's role was so much extended in the movies, i'm not that fond of her.

It's maybe because Liv Tyler is a 'famous' actress that she had to have her 20 minutes of screenplay i dunno
I agree with you Virumor! I like Liv Tyler as an actress and she did look like I imagined Arwen. But I thought the sword and the ride to the ford was...ridiculous. Even more ridiculous were the twenty-minutes of kissing scenes!!! But I'm just a classic purist...I did appreciate her mastery of Elvish.

Two hand high in the air for Liv...she did great in the movie(s)
You hit it right on Virumor! The only things I really hate about Arwen's part were how she romped around the woods like a tomboy and kissed Aragorn so much(squirm!)

I like Liv in the movie, she was awesome at playing Arwen. All the actors that had to learn elvish were good at it, it must have some time and effort to do that and get it right.
Sheryl sences Aule`s heart beating fast. Big Laugh Smilie

Well everyone, I`m finally back. Not as brown as I would have hoped, but tanned. It was great! I really enjoyed myself. The service on the cruise was in credible! Super Wow Smilie

Well, I`ll speak to you later.

Oh I take it that you`ve put Liv Tyler on the 'Hot Women' list. Big Laugh Smilie

I like Liv Tyler in the movie....she was great! I mean in the books the elves refer Arwen as being almost exactly as Lúthien....And that was good that they put in Liv Tyler because she is SOOOOOO FINE!!!!!!!!
Daer Eolynn,
(love yourname by the way)
you're not the only one who loved Liv Tyler's portrayal of Arwen. It's almost as if j.r.r. tolkien envisioned her when he made Arwen. She brings the character to life.

I honestly cannot think of other actresses that can match the description of Arwen than Liv. Catherine-Zeta Jones? Ugh. Besides, I think Arwen and Aragorn in the movies look perfect together Smile Smilie
Well, I know I may be just repeating what u've said so far, but if u care for one more opinion, u will bear with me.
I think all Tolkien fans wanted the movie to be more or less the book's illustration (I know I did!). Yet, I've come to think at the movie as a complementary thing to the book, not as its image; if u'd try to do that, u'd see it's not so upseting anymore. Yes, it is a shame that Glorfindel was cut out; yes, it is a shame that Tom Bombadil was cut out; yes, it's a shame that Faramir was transformed! *shivers just thinking about it*
But, what I cannot understand is what the h*** has Liv Tyler to do with all that? I totally agree with those that say she made a great Arwen; that's my opinion too! At least when it came to her, PJ didn't change her character that much! Btw, she would make a stunning Luthien too! *hoping, dreaming*

Namarie!

Heh Aule, this seems to be a post i would delete if i were you... it is a post out of your young and unexperienced days Wink Smilie before you became wise.

Anyway, i repeat that there is a problem if Arwen in the movies is not beautiful at all, especially not in comparison with Eowyn. And we all know Arwen is the most noble and most beautiful woman in Middle-Earth in Aragorn's days (although for me this would be Galadriel which is just opinion again).

But true, if i was PJ, i wouldn't know immediately which actress to pick if it wasn't Liv Tyler. Certainly not if a director wants a more or less known American actress.
I know a good alternative, but she is unknown to the wide (read Anglosaxon) public.

I have no problem with Liv Tyler or her acting in the movies. Arwen in the movies was a complete character change and what Arwen does in the movies goes beyond my worst nightmares, but we can't blame this on Liv but on PJ. And still, what Arwen does in the movies is hilarious. ('Let's change some plot', i hear PJ saying)

It's just impossible to portray Elves the way JRRT described in the Silmarillion. But anyway, i think the way PJ portrays Elves is bad : if you look at Haldir and Co and some dudes in Rivendell you know what i mean : the most beautiful race is the most ugly race after the Orcs.

Personally I thought Liv playin' Arwen in the movies was quite good, she looked okay but everytime I saw her I was reminded of her famous Dad,not a pretty thing to be reminded of. Like my sister,I did not like all the kissing she did,I guess if it had been in the book I would have been okay with it,but it got to be a bit excessive.

That is true, I don't think anyone ever could portray them the way that Tolkien did.

Well, maybe it is implicitly mentioned in the books too. Don't forget the fellowship stayed a couple of months in Rivendell before they went on their journey and that Arwen was in Rivendell too. So the kissing thing would most likely have happened too, although i doubt it, me thinks Elves are more dogmatic than the Pope when it comes to marriage and stuff.

Anyway, the only ppl who kiss explicitly in the books are Eowyn and Faramir. (The cheek !)
