Did you know that most of Tolkien's original manuscripts are housed in a library at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? There have been stories done on this, the most complete can be found at this link:

Have a read...it's pretty cool!

Oldgit
Welcome, Oldgit!

I'd known they were at Marquette, but that's a good read nonetheless. I like the link to the Marquette website as well and the suggestion on both pages that the manuscripts, or at least some of them, are available for general viewing if you go through the right process.
How did I miss your post Oldgit? With a nomen like yours you just [i:3pdzov4a]MUST[/i:3pdzov4a] come back! You [b:3pdzov4a]MUST[/b:3pdzov4a]!
Hmmm....clever Spam :? . No wonder I missed it too.

[b:2g3qif09]GB[/b:2g3qif09]
Spam, you say? It fooled me; they seem to be getting more subtle. Perhaps a new breed of Spaminators (the S-1000? :o ).
Hi,

I'm fairly new and inexperienced in this hi-tech world but I sense from the latest posts that my sharing the connection to the story about Professor Tolkien's manuscripts residing at Marquette is somehow a bad thing...spam of a sort...which is a bad thing, right? I'm very sorry if that's the case, it was certainly not intended that way. I just wanted to share the story with folks that I thought would find it interesting like I do, that maybe the greatest English writer of our time has his "archives", his "library at Minas Tirith" in the United States. And I thought the personal story of the visit to those archives by a couple of Tolkien fans, one British and one American, would be of interest to fans of the professor. I found it brilliant, frankly. Am I missing something or have I done something inappropriate?
Sounds like a wrong conclusion was jumped to about you, sir. I never jump to wrong conclusions myself! Make you late for dinner!

WARNING[/color:3qgdcguw] We jump to all sorts of conclusions here - not just wrong ones. There's bad ones, nice ones, colorful ones, doleful ones, naughty ones and even (occasionally) right ones! We're a [i:3qgdcguw]mixed[/i:3qgdcguw]-conclusions forum here!

Anyhow, welcome to the forum, Oldgit!

Regards
Odo Banks

NB Are you sure the old Beard wasn't just joking? - [Mind you, I've always suspected him to be a troublemaker (unlike me), I just can't ever seem to pin it on him! Cunning! Subtle! Yep, GB all over!]
Apologies for the misinterpretation of your intentions, Oldgit. We get a lot of people (and bots) posting links to things - both Tolkien-related and off-topic - who are just trying to get hits to their site or to sell a product. That's had the unfortunate side-effect of making us rather suspicious; overly-so, it would seem. In any event, I am sorry for misjudging you, but hope you will stay around on the forum. We don't bite when we're not being spammed or are confused.
Well, I only bite when the mood is upon me (usually for dramatic effect - but sometimes purely from malice).
Correction: Change "we" to "everyone but Odo". He's a strange chap, that one (but [i:5j672txz]usually[/i:5j672txz] in a good way). :P
You wouldn't be so nice about it if I bit you!

(Btw Oldgit - it is a good article you posted. Eldo often turns the forum into a farce, don't worry about him. He's generally harmless. I do my best to keep things on the straight and narrows).
Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback, that's a load off my mind. I truly was just trying to share some fascinating info with fellow Tolkien fanatics. It sounds like you are an interesting group and I'm happy I found you. It's funny though, usually, one has to get to know me before I'm able to offend them . Admittedly, it does happen rather quickly . Anyway, thanks for the feedback.
I think you've hit the nail on the head, Oldgit: the rest of the folk on this forum are an interesting group (translated: 'queer-little-lot'), but I do my best to put up with their shenanigans. I trust you're like me, a more mature sort, and one who I hope can help me reign in some of their excesses. God knows, I do my best!

You know, when my kids said to me, "Dad, I hope you're not turning into a Hobbit nerd? Aren't you a bit old for that!" I answered, "Oh no, I'm not a Hobbit nerd, I'm a respectable Hobbit who has gone on a Hobbit forum so I can reign in the excesses of some young people whose respectability is sometimes somewhat unrespectable!" I then applied the rod when they said they didn't believe me. My views are old fashioned, you see. I think that by sparing the rod one spoils the child!

I feel that you and I, Oldit, will get on fabulously! )

My apologies OldGit  . And welcome to the forum  . I must say I thought your post was merely a (very) clever way to advertise The Good Life: Destinations website, particularly as i didn't see any other posts of yours. As it was relevant to this forum though, I didn't see it as a bad thing to leave the post in place.

And I'm glad I did. I hope you stick around and join in some of the other conversations (love your Username 8-) ).

Odo,

Thanks again for your understanding...I am "mature", hence my "nickname". I look forward to reading all the postings and participating in the dialogue...

OG
GB,

No probs...I understand the concern and I'm sure I'd feel the same way as a long-term forum participant. I appreciate the welcome I've received now and I will indeed find my way into the other postings...I promise not to pontificate...well, not too much!

OG
Oh some of us are rather inclined to pontificate too , so no worries there  .
I promise not to pontificate...well, not too much! [/quote:29xe4p44]

Well, we've got all sorts here, Oldgit, but no [i:29xe4p44]Pontiffs[/i:29xe4p44] at this stage. So, imagine the position is open... :ugeek:

(GB could be a candidate, I guess, but for his Pagalistic Puerilism  ).
Milwauke eh? Hmmmmmmm.....
GB and all,

I've had a read through the postings (well, not every word of every one). Wow!!! I'm overwhelmed with the thought that's gone into the dialogue. As I said earlier, I'm fairly new to this world of on-line communication (because I'm fairly old) and actually, this is the first one of these I've ever even looked at. It was The Hobbit movie site that drew me in and I was curious what a "forum" really was. If this is typical, I may have to delve into others. You are a thoughtful, articulate bunch and very clever writers. I'm not in your league by a long shot but I do appreciate you allowing me to drop in. I don't know how much I'll contribute going forward, but I will be reading. Again, it's really nice to know there are Tolkien enthusiasts out there and I'm please I found you. I feel a kinship and that's very nice. Thanks again.

OG
I'm glad you like the forum so far, Oldgit! This is a fairly typical one so far as the basic format and structure is concerned (though it's not very customized), but it has a level of discussion (when we're not being silly) that I think is rather high. Actually, Tolkien forums in general (there are several others, including a few that have been around for over 10 years) seem to have that. 8-) We go relatively light on memes compared to something you'd find in a chan, for instance.

(If the terminology confuses you, don't worry! You just need to get used to the distinct dialect of English that is Internetese :P )
Oh we all feel a little overwhelmed at first OldGit. But let me say that Tolkien forums are generally of a higher caliber than many others as Tolkien readers tend towards greater literacy. I was rather taken aback that I and a friend had to strive for several months to elevate the standards of discourse at a forum for The Prisoner TV show.
