Bottom of Page    Message Board > The Forsaken Inn > LOTR In your language!   [1] [2] >>
HI guys! Wazzup? I know my last post was absurdly long and boring, therefore! I decided to make a short and fun one, so. In this post everyone should write the first part of their LOTR book ("Three Rings for the...") in their language and write under it the country which it is from. For the ones that speak english, you could just write it in english and put where you're from! Cmon it'll be fun I promise! I'll start with my first language! Italian!

Italian, Italy, Rome.

There, now its your turn!
Love,
Arwen
And here it is in finnish!

Kolme sormusta haltiakuninkaille alla auringon,
seitsemän kääpiöruhtinaille kivisaleissaan,
yhdeksän ihmisille jotka vie tuoni armoton,
yksi Mustalle Ruhtinaalle valtaistuimellaan

én Ring betvinge dem og i mørket binde dem
i det dunkle Mordor hvor skyggene rår.

OK, now for the Romanian version...

I could try a frisian version, but then I have to translate it myself, and I'm to lazy...
Here it is in a Luton accent:

Free rings fuh tha elven kings unduh tha sky,
Seven for tha Dwarf Lords in 'eir 'alls of stone,
Nine fuh mor'al men doomed to die,
One fuh tha Dark Lord on 'is dark frone,
In 'a land of Mordor where tha shadows lie.
One ring to rule 'em all, one ring to find 'em,
One ring to rule 'em all an' in 'a darkness bind 'em,
In 'a land of Mordor where tha shaows lie.

Remember, there's no T in Luton. Tongue Smilie
I'm still waiting to see it in "Sheryl'sk though..." :P
Just the topic for me.

Ok, here you have in portuguese (from Brazil):

Três Anéis para os Reis-Elfos sob este céu,
Sete para os Senhores-Anões em seus rochosos corredores,
Nove para os Homens Mortais, fadados ao eterno sono,
Um para o Senhor do Escuro em seu escuro trono
Na Terra de Mordor onde as Sombras se deitam.
Um Anel para a todos governar, Um anel para encontrá-los,
Um Anel para a todos trazer e na escuridão aprisioná-los
Na Terra de Mordor onde as Sombras se deitam.
Hey you gusy that is soooo cool to read1 I loved all of your translations! I hope more are to come! Brazilian... my best friend is from Rio! oiii!

Maybe I'll try Russian some other time. I said maybe, so don't hope. Animated Wink Smilie
I still feel it has more power in English than in Dutch.

Is there anyone else who feels the words have more power in English than in their own language?
Nope... I like it in Welsh, and think it has greater vigour & lyrical style than the "bastardised" anglo-saxon tongue!

Think JRR would agree as he based Sindarin/Quenya on elements of Finnish and Welsh!

PS. Daisy your translation is not quite there but near enough for the Saesa's to understand...heh.

One Eye Smilie
I know! I'm not first language Welsh and it's been a while since A-level Welsh so I struggled. Had to have go though. Wink Smilie

I have that too! But then my own language is Dutch as well... Tongue Smilie

Really, the Dutch translation of the books isn't bad, but it's not... Tolkien enough. I don't know how to put it, but a translation can never be as good as the original. That's a translator-to-be talking here, but at least it gives people who don't speak English a chance to get to know the world of Tolkien. Not quite the same though.

Still working on the Russian version, btw. I'll get back to you on that. Big Smile Smilie
As promised, the Russian version! I can't type Cyrillic yet, sorry.

Tri kol'tsa dlja koroljev el'fov pod nebom
Sem' dlja praviteljev karlikov v svoich kamennich domax
Djevit' dlja smertnix muzjtshin, obretsheni umirat'
Odno dlja Tshornovo Korolja na svojom tshornom prestole
V Mordore, gdje lezjat teni
Odno kol'tso shtobi pravit' nad vsjemi
Odno kol'tso shtobi sobrat' vsjech i svjazat' ich v temnote
V Mordore, gdje lezjat teni

This is not the original Russian version, just my translation of Tolkien's English poem. I don't know if shadows can actually "lie" in Russian, but I pretended they could, because Russian doesn't have a present tense of the verb '"to be", so that would only complicate things further. I'm not sure about the transcription of the Cyrillic letters either, but hey, I tried. The ' in some words stands for the soft sign, which indicates you have to pronounce the previous letter as a soft one. Cool Smilie
Very nice, Tommie! How long did it take you to do that Question Smilie

Thanks! Big Smile Smilie Ermm... Good question. About half an hour actually, but I had to look up certain things, and then I had to make time to post it so that's why it took me so long.
This is my version not the original but here it goes...P.S. Hey Arwen im pretty close to Italy. Happy Elf Smilie

Tri prstena za vilenjaèke kraljeve ispod nebesa,
Sedam za patuljke u njihovim hodnicima kamenim,
Devet za smrtne ljude osuðene da umru,

U zemlji Mordora gdje sjene leže.
Jedan Prsten da vlada svima, Jedan Prsten da ih naðe,
Jedan prsten da ih sve okupi i u tami da ih sveže

These are all so amazing! I especially enjoyed the Spanish version (I must be getting good if I almost knew it! lol) I LOVE IT!
The slovenian version is cool too, i nearly understand it cause im from Croatia.
this is a sweet thread. I don't have a cool english dialect or accent to transcribe; and my second language (brazilian portuguese) has already been done; so I'll just ask about the one I'd love to see: Sign Language, anyone? from any country? If no native signers appear, Maybe I'll ask one of my friends to help me with ASL. Would require a link to an outside site, though, (unless I can post a video here?)

Monrovia, CA, USA
I once started learning British Sign language. The sign for fairy lights is great - just flick your thumbs and middle fingers together all round your head...... that's probably all I remember except for some swear words. Smile Smilie

Wish I could post in my own language here, but we don't use the English letters. Our script is completely different....
Three Rings fer Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven fer the Dwarf-Lords in ther' halls o' stone,
Nine fer Mortal Men doomed ta die,
One fer the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring ta rule them all, One Ring ta find them,
One Ring ta bring them all in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Any thing ending with -ing, sound like a bell going "ting", and all the o's and a's are exaggerated. Jumping Flame Smilie Arizonan-Dakotan accent.

In greek.. dare to translate it? muahahaha

Man, you guys either know a lot of shortcuts or you spend ages painstakingly selecting all the letters. Unless overseas keyboards are different.

This is my wab version...

Three wabs for the wab-ti-wabs under the wawab.
Seven for wabwas in their halls of wabbity.
Nine for wawabwas doomed to wabwab,
And one for the Klummwab (My wabname) on her dark wabbitywab.
One wab to invent them all, one wab to find them,
One wab to say them all until everyone goes mad.
In the land of Klummwab where the wabs lie.

I made that up on the spot. Doncha just love it?

Oh, and I'm from:
Solihull, England AND
Hamilton, NEw Zealand.
I wonder, it wasn't there in German yet...
Was pretty hard to remember too, because I mostly read the LotR in english,
but here it is...

In difference to much other languages, the German translation changes the meaning a bit for poetries sake, for example in English the shadows lie in Mordor while in Germanthey threat, or the first line says "7 R., high in light to the Elven Kings"....
Anyway.
You may find your language version on this web address:

http://www.lodz.tpsa.pl/bez/Tolkien/vers-eng.html

mine is:

"Trzy pierscienie dla krolow Elfow pod otwartym niebem,

Három Gyűrű ragyogjon a tünde-királyok kezén,
Hét a nemes törpök jussa, kiknek háza cifra kő,
Kilencet halandó ember ujján csillantson a fény,
Egyet hordjon a Sötét Úr, szolganyájat terelő,
