Grondy says: Starting 01 April 2006 (this is not an April Fool's joke) we will use the following rules developed by Fionw’ Urion.

The Riddle Rules:

1) Ask a riddle, doesn't have to be Tolkien related.
2) Your riddle can be any form, prose, poem, story riddle, just a question, it doesn't matter as long as it's a riddle.
3) You try and figure out the riddle last posted.
4) You can talk to each other, ask opinions, whatever you can to figure it out.
5) The person asking cannot give too directs hints.
6) Whoever gets it correct asks the next riddle.

And now back to Val's original post:

Hi Beowulf. Welcome to Planet Tolkien. You riddle games sound like something that could be played quite nicely on a forum such as ours. I'm not very good at riddles myself but I'm going to have a guess at your anyway. As I'm likely to get them wrong, there's plenty of scope for others to have a go after me.r
Quote:
At night they come without being fetched, rAnd by day they are lost without being stolen.
I struggled with this one, but I'm guessing Shadows.
Quote:
I make five from one. rI'm a golden path without an end, rA giant bow no man can bend. r
I'm pretty sure this is a Rainbow.
Quote:
I tell who has won, and who is lost. rI'm always true, but don't trust me. rI won't take your soul, but I'll hold your past.
Again, difficult for me, but I'm guessing the answer is History.
Welcome to our forum Beowulf. Happy Elf Smilie

Me thinks they be celestial twinklers, the stars.
That was wierd. Did you move this topic, Grondy? I could have sworn I entered it in the Writer's Guild and stepped out of it in the Forsaken Inn.
Hi Valedhelgwath (bit of a mouthful!) Smile Smilie

Yeh, I'm wondering whether the game would work best on an existing forum or on a new site. An existing forum obviously has got the user base already, while in a new site I could do more fancy stuff.

In terms of the riddles... Shadows isn't far away, but you still get shadows in the daytime. Right with the second. The answer to the third is much more down to earth than 'history' or 'time'. Keep guessing!
Yep, the celestial twinklers it is! Smoke Smilie

I asked for my own thread to be moved after finding out the taverns were for more general discussion.

Any other riddle writers out there?
Yes, welcome to PT, Beowulf!

I'm not sure if this belongs here since I'm not sure if it's actually a riddle. More of a math problem I suppose. Anyway...

I saw this on a website a few weeks ago and it totally stumped me. I'm an entirely right brain thinker so that's not really surprising. And of course, the answer wasn't on the site Mad Smilie Perhaps some bright left brainer could offer some insight?

Quote:
Three men go hunting away from home, and they are out much later than they expected. So they go to the nearest hotel, and the clerk says a room is $30.00. So each man pays $10.00, and the men go to their room.

Then the manager comes up to the clerk and says: " How much did you charge those men for thier room? "

The clerk says: " $30.00 "

The manager says: " Well the new rate is $25.00. " He pulls 5 one dollar bills from his pocket and tells the clerk to give them back their $5.00.

As the clerk heads back to thier room, he thinks to himself: " It would be easier if I just gave each hunter $1.00, and kept the other $2.00 for myself as a tip". So he gives each hunter $1.00, and pockets the $2.00.

If each hunter paid $10.00 and got $1.00 back, that makes it so each man paid $9.00. 3 times $9.00 is $27.00, and the clerk had $2.00, added together that makes $29.00, so where is the other dollar?

I know the answer is going to make me feel really, really stupid, but that's ok.... I already KNOW I'm stupid Big Laugh Smilie
Hi ProgHead,

The tricky bit in your riddle happens at the end when you add what the clerk has to what each man paid. The clerks $2 is part of what each man paid and should be taken away to give the price of the room: 27 - 2 = $25.

If you want to know what happened to the original $30: well the hunters have $3, the hotel has $25 and the clerk has $2. Wink Smilie

It seems my third riddle is a bit too hard, so here's an easier wording:

I tell who is wanted, and who is lost.
I never lie, but don't trust me.
I won't take your soul, but I'll hold your past.
Quote:
I tell who is wanted, and who is lost.
I never lie, but don't trust me.
I won't take your soul, but I'll hold your past.

Your memory? Orc Going Huh Smilie

Prog: your little riddle puzzled me too, but I'm not a mathematics genie, so I couldn't figure it out. And besides, I'm tired. Orc Grinning Smilie But I think Beowulf just solved it for you.
posted on 13/1/2003 at 00:40 by Einar in another thread:

Here are some riddles that I found in the Hobbit. Can you answer them without looking into the book

Voiceless it cries, wingless flutters,
Toothless bites, Mouthless mutters.

(moved by Rednell)

Quote:

A photograph maybe Beowulf?

I don't remember Einar's Hobbit riddle, but the wind fits some of the clues: the wind cries (howls) when it goes through a tight place;the wind flutters a flag; when the wind is cold it bits, and I'm not sure when it mutters, maybe when it is gusty?

The only riddles I know are so old their beards are white.

What is black and white and red (read) all over? This one works better orally.

What's black and white and red and black and white and red, and black ... and white and red? (I think I stole this from Ross)

I haven't seen Beowulf around in quite a while, but I'm willing to bet your right on the money, Grondy Thumbs Up Smilie
this is my favorite riddle:

A man lives all alone. He has his groceries delivered to him and he works at home, so he never really has to leave his house. One dark and stormy night, he was unusually tired. He shut off all the lights and went to bed. When he awoke the next morning, he realized his actions had caused a huge catastrophe. What happened?

Newspaper, right?
You’re right Grondmaster! It is the wind. Big Smile Smilie

I'm guessing he's a lighthouse keeper, in which case turning off all the lights could prove a wee bit inconvenient for the local shipping.
Yes Tommie, a newspaper.

I guess we need someone to go to the library and check out a riddle book (or to 'google' us up some classic riddles) so we can have more fodder to chew upon in this thread.
lighthouse keeper...you got it, Val Big Smile Smilie
They waited until a passing Spanish trawler, illegally fishing within the island's 12 mile territorial waters spotted them and took them home (possibly locked in one of their numerous hidden fish holds).

Failing that, the two 50kg men would have to row home. One would then have to row back the island (assuming no S&R helicopters are available). The 100 kg man would then leave the 50kg man on the island while he rowed home. Once home, he'd give the boat to the other 50kg man who would then row back to the island to pick up his 50kg friend.
I have another one:

When I'm with you, you don't hear me
And when you call out my name I'm gone.
What I'm I?
When I'm with you, you don't hear me
And when you call out my name I'm gone.
What I'm I?

Is it mind!?
No is not.
Quote:
When I'm with you, you don't hear me
And when you call out my name I'm gone.
What I'm I?
Is this one silence/peace?
This one I actually don't know the answer to, and no one I know can figure it out, so I'll put it up for you folks to go at:

I sought my first in starry skies
Where shines the April sun;
My second came before my eyes,
And warned me to be done.

'Tis very hard to lose one's sight;
I'm blind as bat or mole;
Once hills and fields were my delight,
Now I'm no more my whole.

Also, I really like this one:

500 begins it and 500 ends,
5 is seen in the middle.
First of figures and first of letters
Take up their places between.
Join all together and you will bring
Before you the name of an eminent king.
Yes its silence, well done val.
I've got an other one,,,

I come once in a tuesday and wednesday
But only once in a year
Though 2 times in a week

I aslo have a hint for it, but you're pro's at riddles, so it can wait.

Ok- here goes.

There's a wolf, a donkey and a cabbage on one side of the river, you have a boat, and have to get the 3 to the other side, though the boat can only hold you and an item(or thing/animal) . But if you leave the cabbage with the donkey, it'll eat the cabbage, and if you leave the wolf with the donkey, the wof will eat the donkey.

How do you get them across?
Okay another one of these rowing ones, which I tend to be quite good at because part of my job is taking people to different sandbanks and leaving them there.

1) Take the donkey across
2) Go back and pick up the wolf
3) Drop the wolf off on the other side. Take the donkey back with you.
4) Leave the donkey behind and take the cabbage across.
5) Leaving the cabbage with the wolf, go back and pick the donkey up.
Very - extreemely nice Val,,,

It's good to have an expert at these riddles.! Wiggle Smilie

Try this one:

Whoever makes it, tells it not.
Whoever takes it, knows it not.
And whoever knows it wants it not.
To be so certain of his own colour, he must be able to see that both the boys in front of him are wearing the only two blue hats. He must be wearing a red hat therefore.
Another riddle?

Here is one of my favourites (quit easy):

You have five glasses on a line: The first two are filled with water (F), the last three are empty (E). How could you obtain the following pattern by making just one move?

E - F - E - F - E
Whoops... I was thinking the third boy was the one who could see the heads of the other two. Without him asking a different question, I don't think he'd be able to guess from the information given because there could be several answers (any combination that doesn't result in the two front boys wearing blue).

If he could ask another question though, I'd have him ask the boy behind him to tell him what colour hat he was wearing.
Quote:

Take the first full glass and pour the water into the fourth glass. Put the first glass back where it came from.
I think,('cause i heard a riddle of this type before) that the boy is wearing a red hat.

Because, the boy at the back can see the 2 others, so if he saw that they had blue hats on, he would have called out red. Since he didn't call out red, the front boy knows that he isn't wearing a blue hat, so the other choice is red, so that's what he is wearing.

Quote:
What can she do so she doesn't have to marry the evil money lender?
I would guess she should palm a white stone before she puts her hand in the bag. If when she show it as the one she pulls out and the evil money lender complains, tell him to let her father view the then contents of the bag, which he won't want to do for it will show him as the cheat he is.

However, being evil, the old money lender reneged on his bet and foreclosed on the mortgage, and the beautiful young girl became an old washerwoman in order that she and her father could eat. Elf Rolling Eyes Smilie

Sorry, that's not it, Rhodry...any other guesses? (I'll repost the riddle to save you all the trouble of scrolling around...)

"Whoever makes it, tells it not.
Whoever takes it, knows it not.
And whoever knows it wants it not."
Heres one of my favorites, its not hard once you know the answer but ive gotten a few people with it.

A man is walking through the woods on a path, he is trying to get to the village of truth, he comes to a fork in the road, one way leads to the village of truth, where everyone tells the truth, the other way leads to the village of Liars, where everyone lies, he sees a villager from one of them standing at the spot where the path splits, what one question could he ask him to find out which way it is to the village of truth, regardless of which village hes from?

[Edited on 31/1/2003 by TolkienNut991]
You ask the man, "If I ask a man from the village you're not from which is the village of truth, what will he say?"
That might not be your answer, but it works. Both will point to the village of lies, so you just go down the other one. Tongue Smilie
That wasn't an answer i heard before but it works, The answer i had heard was: Which way to your village?
Ahhh...Genius!
Here is mine...

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I? Juggling Smilie

I'm not sure, Elda, but is it an eye?
Yes,eye is correct!
Ok, here's an other riddle:

There are 3 light switches outside the room, and 3 lightbulbs inside the room. the room is completely closed(exept for a door), and you can't see inside the room when you're standing outside. Once you go inside the room , you can't come out. And you have 2 hours to figure out which light switch goes to which lightbulb...
How do you do it ?

Perhaps he's driven to the top floor of a multi-story car park. Once up there, maybe he parks too close to the car next to him so he cannot open his door. His only resort is to jump out of the window.
