Okay, competition time. As it's Xmas, we're going to do Tolkien themed 12 days of Christmas songs. I tried to do one last year using just significant numbers (eg. 9 Ringwraiths, 3 Silmarils, and 1 ring to rule them all) but I ran out.
If anyone can come up with a full set of 12 significant numbers in Tolkien's work for a good old singalong, they will get the coveted Cuddly Badger award. These Badgers will also be handed out for funny songs, and of course, just plain good songs.(badgers are not tangible in the real world, this is not a good competition, you merely win the respect of your peers in reality)
MAKE SURE THEY SCAN!!! (as in they go with the original tune, and are singable)
And if you are still in school, and have a carol concert coming up, hassle your teachers to let you sing this at your concerts.

Grondmaster edited Thursday 16th December 2004 And as it's again the season, I thought we ought to resurrect this thread, from the back pages of history, to let our newer members share in the fun and add their own versions.

So borrow what you like and see if you can come up with a better or as good as one. As I remember I made mine singable, while missing the point about using Tolkien's more relevant numbers. Stonehelm did this quite well.

Okay, bear with me here. It is 2 AM and this looks like it works, but I may think otherwise in the light of day, as I only spent an hour on it.

(Go to the twelfth day to see if it is singable.) Merry Christmas Smilie

I have had that song going through my head for over 24 hours now!! Big Smile Smilie
Heh, very good. I've been racking my brains for a good 5 for the last year, why the heck didn't the Istari ever occur to me?

Cuddly Badgers go to both Grondy and Stonehelm (though Stonehelm's is slightly cuddlier than Grondy's) keep 'em coming.
Excellent ones Stonehelm, and you followed the rules better than I, well done. Cool Elf Smilie
Wow, you guys are great. I loved both songs. This is a great idea Plastic. Standing Up Santa Smilie Merry Christmas all!
Thanks Grondmaster Wink Smilie
This sure sounds like fun! Orc Grinning Smilie

I don't know this song of yours, but I made this out of it:

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
One dragon, fiery and powerful

On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Two elven-brothers

On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Three Silmarils, set in a crown

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Four dwarves with rhyming names

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Five hobbits, merry and glad

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Six ponies, wise and fair

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Seven Rings for the Dwarf-lords

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Eight Nazgul on wraths

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Nine fellows a shipping

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Ten men on horses

On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Eleven stupid questions of a silly hobbit

One the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Twelve Elves in a dark wood

Eleven stupid questions of a silly hobbit

Ten men on horses

Nine fellows a shipping

Eight Nazgul on wraths

Seven Rings for the Dwarf-lords

Six ponies, wise and fair

Five hobbits, merry and glad

Four dwarves with rhyming names

Three Silmarils, set in a crown

Two elven-brothers

And one dragon, fiery and powerful

Big Laugh Smilie Doesn't make sense, does it? Big Laugh Smilie
Tommie, since you didn't know the tune, I thought you did an excellent job. I am very impressed.
Tommie: Surely you have heard the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas", which I first heard in the late 1940s sung by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians on the radio as I was getting ready for elementary school.

Fi----ve Go----ld----en Ri--ngs,
Four Calling Birds,
Three French Hens,
Two Turtle Doves,
And a Partridge in a Pear Tree. Christmas Tree Smilie

Of course, maybe the Flemish translation won't fit the tune, so it is never played in B*elgim. Smiling Santa Smilie

Here is a link to the tune:

http://www.12days.com/library/carols/12daysofxmas.htm .

Now you have the tune, you may wish to try again, as I don't remember seeing any number of entries limit in the rules. Happy Elf Smilie

All that said, your words are better than mine as they more closely fit the Tolkien theme, while mine only fit the tune, whereas Stonehelm's did both.

I especially like this line. Angel Smilie
What is it with you people and NOT using 9 nazgul? Why 8? Am I missing something? Has my LOTR got a chapter missing, or a misprint? Very confused I am....
In my line "Eight Wraiths a burning" I was talking about the wraiths that were killed by Mt. Doom, Eowyn had already killed the Witch King so there were only eight.

Super Wow Smilie At least I got one of them right with my "Nine Nazgűls Prancing".

Wiggle Smilie <--- That's my "happy dance".

Oh I see, you WERE paying attention. Incredibly well done, have another cuddly badger (it's got a santa hat on and everything). Wow, speechlessly good....

What's your excuse Tommy? Wink Smilie
Now I have two cuddly badgers! Big Smile Smilie
Ermmm. *making up an excuse*

Cos I thought fellows and shipping was so nice and I didn't find anything else with 8. There. Animated Wink Smilie

Juggling Smilie

Thanks for the tune, Grondy. I *honestly* had not heard it before, so I must have been lucky it fit the tune. Big Smile Smilie
Wow, these songs are excellent! I am getting my own ready, am a bit busy at present but will post it when it is done, if there is no time-deadlines...great idea Plastic Squirrel!

So borrow what you like and see if you can come up with a better or as good as one.
And be them better or worse you shall have me singing alongside you!!!

*Takes a deep breath*

Give me words people!

Maybe we could do it as a 'round' - one line each.

For starters....

One the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me
A Hobbit underneath the party tree....

next!
On the second day of christmas my true love sent to me:
Two white wizards

On the third day of christmas my true love sent to me:
Three elven rings

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
Four members chatting

Lets see if it is singable so far:
Smiling Santa Smilie
Four members chatting,
Three elven rings,
Two white wizards
And a Hobbit beneath the party tree....

(I needed to drop a syllable from the last line and now it is working)

Carry on folks! Waving Santa Smilie
Hmmm... it works if you sing "And a Hobbit underneath the party tree" instead of beneath. Just sing it quickly.
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me:

Five Dunedain rangers oh so charming
How about

Five Wizards Wise

Or

Five Wise Wizaaaaaaaaaaards!

?
....its almost december Smile Smilie

i cant think of a six...so illl just say *bump*
Please wait until the biginning of Advent, or at least until after Thanksgiving Day, which in the USA is next Thursday. Elf Sticking Tounge Out Smilie
so impatieant....
So like maybe now would be okay. Christmas Tree Smilie
I am trying to think of a hobbit based one, but this is all i got:

12 dwarves wait 13
11
10 funny riddles
9
8
7
6
5 battling armies
4 talking spiders
3 mean trolls
2 elven homes
And a dragon in a mountain

I suppose you could substitute 2 elven homes for 2 queer lodgings (eagle eyrie, and beorn's). Oh how many eagles were there?
arg! i totally forgot!!!!!

thats preety good cardimm******
Reviving an old thread for the holidays. Christmas Smilie Have fun! Smile Smilie
In Caudimordax's Hobbit based one above
Quote:
12 dwarves wait 13
That could be:

Twelve Dwarves a packing one heavy fat sleeping Bombur Elf With a Big Grin Smilie
Eleven Elves a singing Come! Tra-la-la-lally! Come back to the Valley!
Ten funny riddles
Nine Goblins a prancing
Eight legs a swarming Mirkwood Spider
Seven Wargs a sniffing ?
Six buttons popping lost from Bilbo's waistcoat at the Goblins' back door.
Five arm-ies at war
Four spinning spiders
Three debating Trolls
Two Elvish swords
And a Dragon in a Lonely Mountain.

Feel free to improve on it, but check the above link to listen to the tune, because my meter isn't right for some of the lines.
