He promised them great power. (There's probably more to it, but that's all I know)
Almost Turin, but what did he give them towards obtaining this great power?
He gave each one of the a Ring of Power.
Oh, my bad, I took that question as how did he get the men to accept the rings, because otherwise the question would've been just too easy Smile Smilie
Thorin gets the pretty bauble; Turin gets an "Attaboy." Happy Elf Smilie
(It takes 100 "Attaboys" to negate one "Aw Shucks!" Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

List the eight Aratar.
Manwë, Varda, Ulmo, Yavanna, Aulë, Mandos, Nienna and Oromë.
Correct Keonvan; you get the Pseudo-Silmaril. Happy Elf Smilie

The Ford of Rivendell crossed which river Question Smilie
Correct Keonvan; you get the Pseudo-Silmaril. Happy Elf Smilie

The Ford of Rivendell crossed which river Question Smilie
I remember it's the ford of Bruinen (I think that's the right spelling), so that's my guess: Bruinen.
Correct Turin, it's also called the Loudwater, so you get the pretty bauble. Happy Elf Smilie

Where did the Great East Road end in the West Question Smilie
The white downs, perhaps at Michel Delving.
Not westerly enough. Teacher Smilie
The Towers of the Elves near the sea?
Nope. Shaking Head Smilie

Hint: It is a port.
Well, I'm at a loss because the only port my map shows has a road to it is Pelargir, and that's on the North-South road. Also, according to my map the Grey Havens has no major road to it, but given your hint, I think that's what you want. So the Grey Havens it is.
I just wrote a long dissertation about why the Great East Road would have ended at the Grey Havens along with a few map references where it did and didn't. But the dog (computer glitch) ate it. I couldn't find the text reference that said so, but it must be in there somewhere. If anyone is really interested, they may start a new thread asking the question under Places.

Anyway, Turin gets the Pseudo-Silmaril for his answer. Happy Elf Smilie

What does "Lúva" mean in English Question Smilie
I haven't the foggiest.
Grondy chose this one for me, me thinks!

Lúva means bow, (from Quenya...), which I recognised as from being part of the written letters that Tolkien created. For each primary letter there is a straight stem as the base of it and then from the stem, comes a curl-ing line, or a bow, called the lúva, to then govern what each letter is, for the way that it is curled, different curls created different sounds and letters... Lesson over for now Teacher SmilieElf Winking Smilie
Loss gets the pretty bauble for his "bow" and the Tengwar lesson. Happy Elf Smilie

Whose bow was called Belthronding Question Smilie
Well, I'm going to have to guess Beleg's, because the name sounds like his, and everyone's weapon had a name in the First Age. But that is a complete guess and I don't remember it ever saying that in the Silmarillion.
Good guess Turin, it was Beleg and The Silmarillion says so, so you get the Pseudo-Silmaril. Happy Elf Smilie

Whom does this describe. 'Their captain was________, grim-voiced and grim-faced, whose friends had accused him of prophesying floods and poisened fish, though they knew his worth and courage.' Question Smilie
That must be Bard in the Hobbit.
Yes it was Bard Thorin, so you get the pretty bauble. Happy Elf Smilie

What was the first capital of the Dúnadan Kingdom of Arnor Question Smilie
Annuminas i think , im not sure though
Annúminas it was Golden_red; you get the Pseudo-Silmaril. Happy Elf Smilie

Fill in the blank: '__________ am I, Biggest of all, Huge, old, and tall.' Question Smilie
Oliphaunt
Elephant, Hefalump, and Oliphaunt they all like hunny; so Turin gets pretty bauble. Happy Elf Smilie

What role did the sons of Ulfang play in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad Question Smilie
I know we're not supposed to make useless posts, but that question just dropped me three ranks as a Tolkien fan. Confession: I have no idea what you're asking about! Is it from The Silmarillion? Which, due to mental fatigue, I just realized could be abbreviated as "The Silly."

And now I have dropped yet another three ranks. Fortunately, they are purely figurative, fictional, and trivial, but please don't tell me that; I need some incentive for improvement.
They led the betrayal against the sons of Feanor and turned the tide against the Eldar and the Edain. Without their help Morgoth could not have won. I think they were all killed by the sons of Feanor and the sons of Bor.
(Note: The Nirnaeth Arnoediad, called "The Battle of Unnumbered Tears" was the fifth battle in which Morgoth overthrew Hithlum and the Sons of Feanor. You are correct it is in the Silmarillion/Silly).
Turin has the correct answer and the Pseudo-Silmaril which I think I may now also abbreviate as the 'Silly'.

What was a genealogical reason that Gimli might have hated the Watcher in the Water Question Smilie

Ar-Edain: Don't worry about it; I don't know very much about The Silmarilion either; but I have the book at my fingertips. I certainly couldn't pass a closed book test on it; though I probably would one covering The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Hint: Something about a relative of Gimli's.
Didn't it kill Oin?
Yup, just like in Star Wars, Uncle Oin got himself deaded.

Who's emblem was a white swan-ship on a blue field Question Smilie
Prince Imrahil's
Yes, Turin the rulers of Dol Amroth; you get the pretty bauble plus the one I forgot to present you last time. Happy Elf Smilie

What did Tolkien 'cordially dislike in all its manifestations' Question Smilie
Allegory.

P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has internalized that quote.
That's it Turin; a pretty bauble for you. Happy Elf Smilie

Where did Legolas feel the air throbbing in his ears Question Smilie
Fangorn?
No, not in Fangorn Forest.

Try again.
After perusing LotR for a little bit, I give up. Anyone else want to take a shot?
In the herd of trees before helms deep?
You got it Arath, those Huorns had a mighty dislike for them pesky Orcs, Uruk-hai, and Dunlendings. Their hatred semed to raise the barometric pressure or something. Arath gets another Pseudo-Silmaril. Happy Elf Smilie

Who slew Saruman Question Smilie
Grima Wormtongue
Another Pseudo-Silmaril to Turin for the correct answer. Happy Elf Smilie

What was Morgoth's last desperate gambit in the Great Battle, the War of Wrath Question Smilie
Was it Ancalagon the Black?
I think it was releasing all of his dragons, including Ancalagon. (By the way how did Earendil slay him? He was in a sailboat.)
(I don't know how he slayed him. All that the Sil says is that he threw him down on Thangorodrim. Maybe the Silmaril which was with him had a part in that? Who knows?)
Turin has the correct answer and the Pretty bauble. Happy Elf Smilie
Quote:
By the way how did Earendil slay him? He was in a sailboat.

His ship the Vingilot being made for sailing the heavens was manufactured of crystal, mithril, and chalcedony; and thus was impervious to Dragon fire, not to mention those ubiquitous protective shields. It was powered by Earendil's Silmaril via an anti-matter converter. For offence it mounted twin photon torpedo tubes fore and aft, plus the usual complement of phazar cannon. Ancalagon the Black never had a chance. Teacher Smilie

What were Bethil and Glingal Question Smilie
I got it, but I cheated so I'll wait another day for someone to get it.
Go for it Turin. Happy Elf Smilie
