Bottom of Page    Message Board > Website General Discussion > Open Council
The Council would like to make its position on postings within Planet-Tolkien clearer. Discussions on all topics except religion and politics are welcome as long as they comply (as should all posts) with the Family Friendly guidelines, which are:

Does not contain any adult-themed or sexually explicit text, images, or photographs
Does not accept advertising for alcohol, tobacco, gambling, or pornography
Does not promote hate, violence or discrimination in any way
Does not promote any illegal substances or activities
Posts and enforces rules in its chat rooms and forums to prohibit
1. Sexually explicit language
2. Profanity
3. Remarks that disparage or ridicule other people

Most of the guidelines are adhered to by the majority of members without too much effort. We exercise discretion over editing but it is not our intention to restrict discussions and we are making an effort to work within these guidelines and Taz's own standards without being heavy handed, insensitive or over-protective. Swear words and abusive language are not permitted neither is sexually explicit language but proper words are acceptable depending on context. Common sense and awareness!

There have been incidents in recent history where members with grievances, either perceived or real, have resorted to posting extremely inappropriate posts within the forums and journals. Rather than this we would ask that you discuss your grievance with a Council Member.

If a member resorts to extreme swearing, temper outbursts and personal attacks on Taz, Council Members or other members then they will be contacted and their account may be disabled for a cooling-off period. This is not a punishment and does not mean they will be banned forever from Planet-Tolkien but we need to remove offensive material as quickly as possible and sort out any problems.

Please respect the wishes of Taz, who pays for the site, and continue to enjoy Planet-Tolkien. We do consider suggestions and grievances - we just ask that they be dealt with in a mature way.

If you have any queries or comments about how the Council enforces these rules, or if you do not fully understand them, please feel free to post in this thread.

In fellowship
The Planet-Tolkien Council
Testing testing... nope, there is nothing wrong with the reply button. Nobody has posted yet. Doesn't anybody have anything to say? No questions? Nothing? Good or bad? Oh well, I'll begin then.

"Oh I really want to post in here, but they will ban me if they don't like what I am saying!"
Nope! As long as you can express yourself without swearing or being too rude, we will reply. If you do use foul language, we will edit them away and reply to what you are trying to say. It is not humanly possible to make everybody happy, but we try to do our best.

"I will be banned if I do something they don't like on this site."
Actually, it takes a bit of effort to be denied access to this site. We all do mistakes, and we all have said things we regret later. We will edit and in the worst cases delete your post.
If it is really bad and uncalled for, or we find we have to edit you again and again and again, we will contact you and we will try to sort things out in private. Usually that is all it takes.

"I totally disagree with what AmariŽ did to my post! There was nothing wrong with it! Evil Council Member!!!"
or
"Hey! That was a really rude comment made by AmariŽ, who does she think she is!?!"

That is quite alright, but don't yell at me in the forum, we Council members try not to yell at members in public, you can do us the same favour. If a CM (or any member) post something he/she shouldn't have, and none of the other CMs fix it, send us an e-mail at council@planet-tolkien.com and explain what you disagree on and why and we will sort it out together. CMs have to follow the rules too, but we are only humans and misunderstandings are bound to occur on both sides. Maybe you won't agree but at least you will get an explanation.

Ok, next please. Happy Elf Smilie

when did the site apply for family friendly status?or did it always have family friendly status?
In anwer to the above I was able to find the following:

I just got an email from the folks at FamilyFriendlySites.com, a group who's mission is to support the online safety of family members using the Internet. They appropriately offer websites a designation that will be easily recognized by family members and other Internet users.

Planet-Tolkien was approved and has been made available in the FFS Directory.

You can find our logo of affiliation at the bottom of the left hand navigation bar.

Well done PT council!
That said, I believe we have always operated under similar guidelines. FamilyFriendlySites.com merely accepted us under their umbrella, tent, or into their fold (if you'd rather have the sheep simile).

I think it is easy for people to assume that because we mention Family Friendly rules they are difficult to keep and are a form of censorship. But a lot of sites such as Planet-Tolkien have their own set of rules designed to keep what is, in effect, a community/society running smoothly. When you consider the variety of ages and nationalities on this site it is just good common sense.

The Family Friendly thing draws attention to it and then people focus on the rules being RULES rather than what they are designed for. It is good that Planet-Tolkien is approved so that parents know their kids are as secure as possible here but maybe if we just referred to the Planet-Tolkien rules rather than constantly mentioning FF rules as well people would not assume there is some high profile censorship going on.

The FF comes under the umbrella of PT rules and guidelines as much as PT comes under the umbrella of FF.

Yes I belive you did. I remember thinking (and saying) it was so great that this site and the CMs got the Family Friendly sign as a reward for the hard work they had put down! They had been watching us hadn't they? To make sure the forum was monitored well enough? Anyway, the rules were already there, they just have a headline to be listed under now. Smile Smilie
I must say (and I mean this in the fondest way possible, Vee and Amarie) that it is quite funny to watch CMs chat back and forth about the rules! Big Laugh Smilie All this agreeing is rather amusing!
Well, if it brings a little joy to someone's life then it is worthwhile.

The V_goddesses can bring you happiness and laughter as well as pain!
Speaking of pain, I see none in having a FF website.

I know my daughter appreciates it, now that she's a member.

Professor Tolkien himself would have approved, I think, because he did not use profanity publicly and kept his nose relatively clean, if you know what I mean. Besides, isn't the point of this wonderful place fellowship, which in itself means we should take care not to offend our fellow members? Just a thought.

For those of you who feel unjustly censored, let's try to get beyond that, be sensitive to others, and just enjoy yourself-the "good, clean fun" way. It really is no big deal.

That said-I love you guys!

Well said Laurelindhe ilmarin! Happy Elf Smilie
Awww.... Thank you Laurelindhe. Smile Smilie

Maybe I should add that I wasn't a council member when PT got their FF-approval, just a regular member, and as enthusiastic as Laurelindhe. Smile Smilie The ff rules are just common sense, I thought so then and I think so now.

And I didn't agree on all the rules either. At that time PT had a selection of avatars we could choose, but I didn't want to look like somebody else, and was really sad to hear that custom-made avatars were only for the Council Members. I found my own little way to get my message across without being cranky or disrespectful and it worked. So it is worth a try. Smile Smilie
The Council have clarified the use of #tolkien and #bilbos-study.

#tolkien is the main channel and is used for general chat and sometimes even Tolkien-related chat and is not restricted to Planet-Tolkien members. #bilbos-study is used for study sessions which will be announced in the Forums and for playing Tolkien Hangman and Tolkien Trivia. Study sessions take priority and games will be disabled for the duration of any session but the games are available to play at any other time.

To start one of the games type !hangmanstart or !triviastart. For Hangman anwers must be preceded by ! but for Trivia you only need to type in your guess. If you have a problem just ask.

If you are using the PT applet to access the chat channel and you wish to be in both #tolkien and #bilbos-study, you will need to open two browser windows and use two nicknames. Adding an underscore (_) to your original nick works.
Reading through this did take a while, but, hey, it sure was worth it. Smile Smilie
It's a very good thing PT is a FFS! There are many crazy people out there, and we do have to be very careful. I'm very glad that PT is FF, considering I am younger than many of the people on here (no offence meant cuz you guys rock!) And it is wonderful to know I'm safe Smile Smilie

Yes, especially with all the crazy ppl in here... Very Big Grin Smilie
If all the crazy people are in here then all we have to do is lock the doors. Who has the key?

I promise I will behave with the trivia. I already reached a score around 170 in one session, so I try to behave..

Rhapsody
(who is a bit too fond of playing trivia)
Tsss, I did 1111 in one night once. Then I got bored and I liked the number... Too bad someone resetted the score. Tongue Smilie
I dont mind FF rules its as you said common sense!!!
i dnt mind

Um how do you get to be a council member haha (cheeky)

Of course, you have to send in a bribe of a few thousand pounds and then mass spam them till they agree.

Or you could just sit around being a good member and then one day a mail will knock on your inbox's door asking you to be a CM.

The choice is yours!
hehe....5000 spam emails already sent...i wish my computer was faster...now to get some money....
i will not disrespect those on the council and bribe them, i will do what they ask of me, and just hope for that knock on my door......
Nooooooooooooooooooooo, we wants bribes we does!
I'm right there with vee, bribes please! Someone has to buy my god-daughter "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus: The Magical Cloud Kingdom" for Christmas. She needs it precious, preciousssss!

I had to spend half an hour explaining to my mother why she had to get Zea Princess Annalise and three other friends why they needed to buy horses and assorted other dolls for the occasion. Iím beginning to think Zeeís teens are going to be easier, at least then I can just buy her a pint!

and if that what they ask of me then i must obey, (so then i can be a council member lol hehe)
couple of million quid, couple of willing brunettes and who knows what can happen!
Now, now... keep it clean. I assume the brunettes are there to do the cleaning and ironing?

I think even this brunette would willingly clean and iron for a million quid!

hey grep...i'll do your ironing for free...Wink Smilie
I would find a separate section for religious or political stuff quite useful at the site. People can have good discussions upon those subjects without arguing you know. I've had a few of those with some PT members. Some in the chat room, some outside it.

Not once has a politcal discussion in here been good. Every single time we have had our hands full with anger and hurt and insulted feeling. People are NOT able to discuss these things without fighting, so they can't discuss it at all. Talking to a couple of people in a chat room is not the same as talking to several hundred members in a forum. Sad, but true.
why make the brunettes do the ironing when they have a million quid they can hire a maid to do it for them! i love the new site coolies greppy
Lol @ Loss

So true, so true. The Planeet-Tolkien makes me feel alive as never before. It is almost like an extended family, (tears of happiness).
Precisely my sentiments, Undomiel.
