Beregond was a soldier in the Third Company of the Citadel. As such it is likely he was frequently on guard duty around the palace where he would have seen Faramir grow up.
Although he would not have served under Faramir in this role, Faramir seems to have been the sort of person to find the time to talk with the common soldiers around him and try to understand them. This nature would mean a lot to the men around him, and hence Faramir became well loved.
I doubt if Faramir and Beregond were the sort of friends who would go out for a drink together, but I think they would have spent time together over the years. Beregond would have watched Faramir growing up, and so would know much about him, and with Faramir's nature, a soldier who had been close to him for that length of time would be known to him also.
