Frodo doesn't love Gollum, he only pities him. If Gollum hadn't been such a miserable creature, most likely neither Bilbo or Frodo would have let him live.
What? He doesnīt want to kill him because he sees a little bit of what he could be inside Gollum and Sam hates Gollum!
Come on... Frodo doesn't want to kill Gollum because when he looks at his eyes, he can see the hobbit he once was, Frodo needs to belive that Smeagol can be saved from the power of the ring because if smeagol can, it means Frodo can also, he doesn't just pities him. He fills that if the ring would have posesed him a little longer he would have become just as Gollum, obsesed with the ring.
Yes, Namo, not to forget that also Bilbo felt pity for Gollum and did not wanted to kill him even though he had the chance to.
Still, none of them are in love with Gollum, they simply pity him.
Sam does not like Gollum since he doesn't want him to hurt Frodo.
Frodo, is not in love with Gollum, he feels sorry for him because he thinks that he will become like him if he fails to destroy The Ring. As he says in he needs to believe that there is hope for Smeagol (y'all don't call him Gollum, that is just plain mean) to get to be normall again, so that he can believe that The ring will not take over his soul. Frodo's only love by the end of both book and movie will be the Ring, even if it'll be destroyed he'll still love it. That is why he will never get married, The Ring took a place in his heart that no woman could replace.
Well now Arwen, he does love Bilbo. And Gandalf. And Sam (Altough they're NOT gay).
This is just absurd Rolling Eyes Smilie
I agree with you Arwen and Aire and Prog. I would say Frodo certainly didn't love Gollum because Gollum wanted the Ring.
I wasn't referring to the question, I was referring to the entire "Is ___ in love with ___?" or "Is ____ gay?" concept.

I blame myself, I really do...
Agree with Prog on this one...absurd Very Big Grin Smilie
I realy think that Frodo pitys him and loves him at the same time or Frodo and Sam are gay
These topics are an insult to JRR Tolkien! If he wished to convey that his characters were romantically attracted to one another he would not have left it for us to decide, he would have made it perfectly clear. He clearly indicates that Aragorn and Arwen are in love, there is little doubt that Eowyn habours unrequited love for Aragorn. Don't forget Gimli's total adoration for Galadriel or the steadfast love between Beren and Luthien.
Am I to understand by this line of logic that any demonstration of love, such as a hug, kiss or hand holding between 2 people of the same sex indicates that they are gay? I feel pity for anyone, if that is their true belief. These people are missing out on the deepest expression of friendship. Does this logic dictate that a father should never kiss or hug his son? Hopefully, like mothers, they are exempt from this theory. Although there are times when I wonder.
Touch is so fundamental to the emotional needs of humans. If I am frightened or gravely injured, I would welcome the loving touch of a friend, male or female.

I know that LotR has been reprinted on numerous occasions but I did not realise the later additions had been rewritten.

In the versions that I have read I got no impression at all that Frodo loved Gollum, just a lot of pity for a creature that had been destroyed by the Ring, giving Frodo a mirror into the future of what he too might become.

Nothing homosexual in my version of the book either. Sure Frodo and Sam loved each other, but only in a similar manner to how I love my son or my parents. And as for Gimli and Legolas (from the discussion in another thread)... What book are some of you people reading?

In response to Rednell, who must have been composing her reply at the same time as I was writing my own.

My sentiments exactly, Nell. It'd be a sad world if everytime two people of the same sex showed affection they were accused of being gay. And so what if they are. Surely that is their business, not everyone elses.

That was well said Rednell, it is exactly how I feel about the topic.
If I've said it once than I've said it a thousand times:

People will see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe.

If you want to believe that Frodo is in love with Gollum, then by all means, knock yourself out. That is the beauty of a novel- you can read whatever you want in between the lines.

Many gay people see more than friendship between Frodo and Sam... they see this because they want to see it, not because it's written in the book. I'm sure they are quite aware of that fact but hey, when the book is in your hands it's YOUR book...

I say, whatever floats your boat.
definitey frodo is the biggest homo in middle earth he is gayer than cc deville
Remi's original reply to the above post was lost in transfer to the new site but as his reply deservedly won Post of the Week, I have dug it out and editted it in here.

And if so is true, who the heck cares????

Now I'm so sick of this discussion about Frodo/Sam, Legolas/Gimli or anyone else being gay. Not that I ever asked JRRT himself, but I'm quite sure that in his mind NONE of the characters were gay!!
If anyone wants to belive they are anyway, by all means do so, but keep it to yourselves.

I couldn't have said it better myself, I totally agree with you Prog!!
But my main complait is this: Why is this such a big deal??? Let's just for arguments sake say Frodo IS gay. Does it really matter?? Is he a lesser person because of this??
Lately there has been so much discussion about this it, and it really p****s me off!! Neither Frodo/Gollum/Sam nor Sam/Legolas are gay, at least not in my books. (and apparently not in Vals either )
I've actually started to wonder if those guys who insists that this and that character is gay, are real loners with no friends of their own. I just would like to tell you guys; it IS possible to have friends of the same sex as yourself, and you can even touch them or give them a hug without being gay... (wow, newsflash guys???)

Ok, so I've said mine on the subject. Please, please get over it now and move on guys.

Remi

Moderator Smilie If Remi hadn't given such a good response to this phrase DOLAMROTH, I'd have just deleted it as such comments aren't really wanted here. As it is, I'll leave it here for our 2040 members to view, and they can come to their own conclusions.

I think this thread has gone about as far as it's likely to go, so I think I'll be doing the majority of our members a service if I close it now. Moderator Smilie
I don't love Gollum.
Your homo DOLAMROTH!!
pls ppl, don't start that one again... *sigh*

if dolamroth is or isn't, is not yours or my problem anyway. we don't start namecalling here, and we don't continue it either! Val was right, this thread has gone far enough and there is no need to sink down to the levels of those who actually started the gay-thing in the first place!

(maybe about time to close down this thread once and for all???)

Remi
Moderator Smilie If I can find a way to close this thread it will be done. In the meanwhile I will remove any subsequent name calling threads and we may even consider deleting the whole thread. Moderator Smilie
Elf Rolling Eyes Smilie Pff.. I feel that when the people you discuss with say nothing more than "you s*ck" or "you're stupid", it means you have won the dicussion. But Frodo34 is young (and should also remember he is not really Frodo Wink Smilie ) Anyway, this thread was closed and should be closed again. Where is Remis brilliant reply anyway? It got 'post of the week' too! Hope it will return in time.

I assume we will get back to Post of the Week or at least Post of the Fortnight, which is more like the frequency it was changing. We also ought to have a membership panel's Post of the Month, which was discussed last year.

Remi's post if it was near the top of this thread was probably lost during the move. I'll try to resurrect it if I can find time.

I have found Remi's lost post and editted in the top of one of my own posts (the post which actually closed this particular thread first time around).
I am gonna go weep, for the person who started this thread! Very Sad Smilie Of course Frodo doesnt "love" gollumn. That is crazy! T Very Big Grin Smilie his thread is crazy! Paranoid Smilie i think it should be shut down.
I did in fact close this thread back on the old site, EvithianEhtmire. Unfortunately, when we moved some of the locked threads became open once more. Since Taz hasn't had time to program all of our moderator powers just yet, we are unable to do anything about this at the moment. The trouble is, everytime someone posts here, even if only to say the thread should be closed, it brings it back to the top of the section and stops it being buried in the mirky depths of page 2.

Moderator Smilie From now on I will remove any posts that appear in this thread after this one, whatever their content is. Moderator Smilie
Elk Grinning Smilie Good for you Val! I whole heatedly agree.

Smeagol may have liked Frodo, but Frodo would have been disgusted.

I myself don't think Frodo loves Gollum, he feels pity for him. He sees what the power of the One ring has done to him & therefore sees what he himself would/could become, if he had not the strength in himself and the strength and the support he gets from Sam.

Sam's dedication and loyalty is one of the many things I myself admire about him. Their bond of friendship is strong and true. Sam is there by Frodo's side through it all.
