Hullo. Don't you just love the power of Google? Whilst looking up the correct pronunciation of "Orcrist", I found a link to this website.
I've always loved The Lord of the Rings, but only recently have I actually read the books - over and over and over again. I received all of them, including The Hobbit, when I was 10... I was a little young to fully comprehend all the works, but I did manage to successfully read The Hobbit. I started The Fellowship of the Ring, but found it too hard to understand when I was but a wee lass, understandabley (if you catch my meaning).
I'm 14 now, and currently reside in Australia. Please don't follow the stereotype that I'm a stupid drongo that keeps a kangaroo on a leash. Because I don't. That is illegal here. (grins broadly)
Welcome to PT Diamond. Here you'll be able to play games or discuss any tolkien-related matter with our community and also i'm sure you will enjoy yourself very much here!

A very warm welcome to you!

Welcome to our happy family Diamond of long cleeve. Happy Elf Smilie May we call you Diamond? I don't need to tell you much other than to point out the help/faq link in our horizontal menu and if you can't find there an answer to your question, just ask and one of us will provide it or point you to it, but do try to find a thread/topic or section that has something to with your subject. And if you can't, don't worry about it, for we don't get upset about such things until about the twentieth time, Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

And if you need a rest drop into the The Khazad-dumish Inn, sing us a song and receive a free drink and a complimentary combo plate of our heavy snacks. Everyone has had to sing a song or recite a poem to receive their first drink in that fair establishment.
Hello Diamond! Come join in the games in the Ivy Bush too after you visit the Inn Smile Smilie
Woah... you guys are super nice! To be honest, I was kind of anxious about it, and was not expecting so warm a welcome. Yep, Diamond's fine. And yes: I would love a kangaroo as a pet. There's so many here, and the government wants to cull them! How very sad... Very Sad Smilie
Anywho...
Looking forward to getting to know you fellow Tolkien adorers. Erm... can anyone actually inform me... is it pronounced "Orc-rice-t", or "Orc-wrist"?
Hello!
i pronounce it orc-crist.
i don't know how you're supposed to but thats how we do it in finland Wink Smilie
I pronounce it Orc-crice! I don't really know the correct pronunciation! Elk Grinning Smilie
Hello and welcome! Waving Hello Smilie

Orcrist is an elven name (orc-rist=goblin/orc cleaver). The vowel "i" in Elvish sounds like "ee", not "eye", so I guess 'orc-wrist' would be the most accurate of the options mentioned above. Wink Smilie
Welcome!

Yes Orcrist is Sindarin as Amarie noted (Tolkien spelled it Orchrist in a text called Etymologies -- the word orch 'goblin' has the -ch- sound of German bach, not English church).

Amarie is also correct regarding the last vowel, as it should sound like the -i- in English machine. Appendix E to The Return of the King can help you with other pronunciations with respect to Elvish (trilled r and etc).
How nice of you to come, please stay. You will be very happy here, I am sure of it.Smile Smilie
