Quite right, LITD, quite right.

[quote="Gandalfs Beard":31lebjif]That's almost a chicken and egg question Beren. My guess is that Tolkien (and Lewis too) lovers were probably raised on Fairy Tales and Greek/Norse/Celtic Myths in children's books format. This probably inspired them to read more, move on to Tolkien, and thus become more educated in the process.[/quote:31lebjif]

But, in order to fully explore this notion, we must go and see if there are any counterexamples. Are there any children who were raised with the myths and fairy tales, and then they read Tolkien and were turned off by it? Or, are there any people who had that kind of childhood who can't get into Tolkien, or can't understand it?
If so, this would show that it is very possible that a love (and understanding) of Tolkien varies by individual. Since everyone is different. If this were the case, then some people could be injected with myths and fairy tales and Tolkien, and yet have no love or understanding at all. But then others could have not been brought up like that at all, but they love Tolkien.

Now, if all of this is true, then perhaps intellectual "superiority" (if you will) is just one of the things that defines a Tolkien nut. Of course, not all of the smart people in the world are Tolkien nuts, so there must be other variables (like their personality). So, being smart wouldn't make you a Tolkien nut, but perhaps being a Tolkien nut means you're smart?
...Its on my mind, is anyone else waiting for their EXAM results to come in and is really crapping it? :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Don't worry about it, sure you'll do fine . Or. . . you will fail the Exam and go no where in life and be posting on Hobbit forums all your life   . Either way, good luck!

What I particularly like about Tolkien Fans, is that they are generally more educated than the average fanboy . I'm sure you'll do fine Fela.

[b:355dhjmz]GB[/b:355dhjmz]
This is generally true, GB. Do you think it is because they read Tolkien, or do you think they read Tolkien because they are more educated? hmmm..
That's almost a chicken and egg question Beren. My guess is that Tolkien (and Lewis too) lovers were probably raised on Fairy Tales and Greek/Norse/Celtic Myths in children's books format. This probably inspired them to read more, move on to Tolkien, and thus become more educated in the process.

Reading Tolkien in particular requires a certain level of intellectual sophistication :ugeek: . And as I subscribe to the notion that Nurture can only help people reach their own Nature's potential, it's really a bit of both.

[b:1e84mrm5]GB[/b:1e84mrm5]
Well, it is not necessarily true that all Tolkien Readers are sophisticated, for some cannot pull out of the books what we can, similarities between the Hobbit and the Trilogy, Foreshadowing, The True Lore behind it, the resemblance to Christianity, the list goes on.

But, I think all of us on here seem bright for our own age because we have taken the time to explore beyond the book, and completely digest its true meaning, and what Tolkien meant it to be as a series in itself, not just one book at a time.

In our seeking for more knowledge, we came here, discussing and debating, learning more as we go along. . . to me that is true sophistication  .
I do think...you need some kind of intelligence to fully understand and be able to think in Tolkiens world. By reading his works, you are having a look at his thoughts, his values, a hole life work! LOTR is heavy stuff, and it takes an interest and a willing to read and learn of his philosophy.

Anybody heard of his tale, Leaf by Niggle? That tale demands much thinking, and figuring out what the moral and meaning is

I've heard of it but never read it. Is it one of the tales from the perilous realm? I haven't read them because they aren't set in Middle-earth.
Im not sure, but its not in Middle-Earth. My mom bought some sound-books ( or whatever the translation is ) of Tolkien. And this was one of them
Well, as I said but will say again, I think just about anyone can read Tolkien :? .
[i:3r2t26q1]But,[/i:3r2t26q1] as others have said, it takes more intellectual capacity then the average-joe to fully understand the [i:3r2t26q1]literal yet fantasy-based[/i:3r2t26q1] world that Tolkien has created and put before us to let our imagine thrive on it, and the ones who take this to heart, I think those are the ones who

1. Truly love Tolkien

2. Are smarter then the average-joe.

3. Are awesome enough to come to these forums  .

EDIT: 30th post  . And Oh my goodness. . . Zackira, you realize we joined on the same day, the same year, only a few hours apart?! :|
RESULTS COME IN TOMMORROW!

I'M SO SCARED! I'M SO SCARED! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! AAAAAAAAHHHHH.....

Had to get that out  I am crapping it! I don't know what to do when it comes through the post. How will I open it? I've decided I'm going to run into the shed in my back yard, lock myself in and then slowly, bit-by-bit open the results
Go ahead and lock yourself up, but don't do it slowly. That just makes it more agonizing. Open it as fast as you can and get it over with.
You remind me of the scene in the 5th Harry Potter book when they are all awaiting the results of their OWLs (the Wizarding equivalent of A levels) Fela  . Everyone was terrified to receive their results, but ended up just fine (Ron and Hermione even got made prefects). So cheer up Fela, I think you'll do great  .

[b:2oy7ehxy]GB[/b:2oy7ehxy]
Excellent Fela  , I told you all would be well :ugeek:.

[b:2b8tmadg]GB[/b:2b8tmadg]

3 of them where BAND 1 (THAT IS THE HIGHEST) and my 1 B might get changed to an A because I was off illl when we did practical Drama Exam.

So probabky 5 A's! I'm all happy now
