I have heard that James McAvoy is under consideration. But maybe Ady has an update to share.

[b:13yie2xy]Gandalfs Beard[/b:13yie2xy]
I was just thinking.... what actor would be best suited to play Bilbo in the Hobbit seeing as it is pretty much the most important role. I just can't seem to think of anyone who could recreate Ian Holme's Bilbo! And I thought he did a fantastic job but obviously he's a little old to play a young Bilbo in the eyes of most. Any ideas????
I think that James could [u:af7voyzw]play[/u:af7voyzw] the part very well, but idk about his looks. He is quite skinny and tall, and although they could change his on-screen height, I just don't think he has the "rotund" hobbit physique.

What does everyone think about Martin Freeman? Here's a pic where he looks a bit like Holm: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Med ... man460.jpg
Frodo/Elijah wood didn't have the traditional Hobbit physique either. His younger image largely is formed on the Hildebrandt and Bakshi versions (which captured my own vision nicely). Anyway a chub suit would render that point moot. Thanks for the image of Martin Freeman. You are right, he definitely looks the part.

Hello, I would like to suggest an actor I think would fulfill what I had in mind as I read the Hobbit the first time; Nick Frost http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0296545/. I know that Nick Frost has played more comical roles, yet Bilbo doesn't start out all that daring or sure footed. I really want to see a round Bilbo, and I have no interest in watching a movie that shows Bilbo as a brave skinny hero right from the get go. I would rather see an American like Jorge Garcia play our beloved Bilbo Baggins rather then any skinny actor out there.
Thanks for the pic of Nick Frost. What excited me the most about that page though, is that Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are slated for roles in Tintin (have you updated your Tintin feed yet Ady?) I would prefer a British actor or at the very least someone who can perform an Excellent British accent like Elijah Wood. Passable is not good enough. Amanda Tapping on the new show Sanctuary can't maintain the accent for more than a couple of lines and far too many American actors are the same. Nothing takes me more out of a film than a bad accent. In Robin Hood, they barely managed to pull it off, the rest of the casting was so good that it made up for Costner's mild accent. They didn't force him to oversell a hammy accent, they just softened and shortened his vowels. But they will need much better to sell me Tolkien.

[b:32ygk5ee]Gandalfs Beard[/b:32ygk5ee]
I definately agree with Gandalf's Beard. It needs to be someone who can maintain a british accent if they aren't british. I liked that first pic. (what was his name having a brain fart!!!!) He looks as though he would do a good job.
How about Colm Meaney? He's older, but he does have that hobbit look, and Bilbo is supposed to be more settled when Thorin and Company appear. Maybe he isn't attractive enough, but he's a good actor (see [i:xkdzf3zp]The Van[/i:xkdzf3zp] and [i:xkdzf3zp]The Snapper[/i:xkdzf3zp], in particular) and the romance in the movie is going to have to be focused elsewhere anyway.
I really like the idea of Colm Meany. He's similar enough looking it wouldn't be distracting. And he's definitely "Hobbity" looking  .

[b:12mvcep9]Gandalfs Beard[/b:12mvcep9]
Colm Meaney would be good!! Definately has the "Hobbit" look about him! <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
Del Toro says he now has it narrowed down to 4 actors for the part but none of them are aware they are being considered. It must be nice to know you can knock on the door of any actor in the world and know he will snatch your hand off for the part.
That is crazy!! Thats really weird that he hasn't told them yet though but I guess it's the best way to get the right person instead of having them all suck up to him all day. lol
I just read Ady's latest blog update on casting for Bilbo Baggins. All I have to say is; MR BEAN!!???? WTF???????? That seems like the oddest choice.

[b:lbw5j574]Gandalf's Beard[/b:lbw5j574]
Seems to me that Rowan Atkinson will make a damned fine Bilbo!
ummm.....*snickers to self*.............I think you guys are missing something. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
Rowan Atkinson? He's a comedy actor, not a character actor, and he has one of the most recognisable faces (and voices) in the world. I just hope the makeup department manages to bury Mr Bean without trace! Or, better still, perhaps the CGI guys will do the same job on him that they've done with Gollum!
Well I haven't seen a Del Toro movie I've disliked yet, so I'm willing to trust him on this one <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . As long as it's not Mr Beans Holiday in Middle Earth  .

[b:3rjk35ny]Gandalf's Beard[/b:3rjk35ny]
I'm not sure about Mr Bean.... Not that I don't like the guy but seriously?! Maybe I've just seen him in too many movies who knows maybe there are some hidden acting skills that he has that I don't know about. lol  Who knows I'm just a little skeptic about him... But maybe that's just me.
Atkinson has the perfect accent. And he's a brilliant actor. And his face is similar enough to Holms' (we're talking loosely here) that it is plausible that they could be considered the same character at different ages. Besides, Bilbo in The Hobbit is funny, ish.
Yeah Barrel, I see the possibilities  .

[b:1eocbqmk]Gandalf's Beard[/b:1eocbqmk]
Guys, I seriously think this is an April Fool's joke...Don't you think it's conspicuous that it was posted on April 1, 2009 at [b:1cok1li5]12:01AM??[/b:1cok1li5]
Darn, I was just getting used to the idea  .
It wasn't 12:01 in Australia. But yes, I'm afraid you're probably right.
A shame really. Now, when I watch it, I will be thinking all the way through, "Rowan Atkinson could have done this better".
Well, it's still up in the air for the casting of Bilbo. Just because it was a prank doesn't mean it couldn't happen <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . Atkinson could be in the running for all we know  .

[b:2ksygc0a]Gandalf's Beard[/b:2ksygc0a]
That's very true GB. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> But I guess we will just have to wait and see <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
I am not usually tempted to offer suggestions but that actor Michael Sheen who starred in FrostNixon and The Damned United is absolutely perfect and he comes over as a really nice bloke too. I don't know how to post images but the pictures of him in IMDB show lots of Hobbity looking ones - and he is an utterly brilliant actor.
I would like to throw the names of two actors into the pot for Bilbo . They are the English actors TOM PAYNE and BEN WILSHAW. Both have distinguished themselves in quality TV drama but are releativly unknown outside the UK. Therefor they come without baggage also they both have that other worldly "Hobbit" like look. Check em out!
[url:qsdd5t5y]http://www.memorabletv.com/c/ben-wilshaw-in-criminal-justice.html[/url:qsdd5t5y]
[url:qsdd5t5y]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Payne_(actor)[/url:qsdd5t5y]
Tom Payne is a good call Francis
I think Tom Payne looks like a real character <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . I don't think he looks like a young Ian Holm, but he reminds me of Frodo when he's in a Ring Trance  ... So he could probably pull it off. I haven't seen anything with Tom in before, so I am just going entirely on looks   .

Gandalf's Beard
I think that Colm Meaney is the best choice. Ian Holm can't do it because he's so old the rigorous lifestyle of 2 huge movies would probably kill him. Colm Meaney looks like Holm a bit, and they can use digital technology to make him look even more like a young Bilbo.
I agree Beren. Colm Meaney is my first choice right now.

[b:8189x5v4]GB[/b:8189x5v4]
He really does look like a hobbit, I totally agree <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />

He also kind of looks like Bilbo himself, so I think we have got a match here!
Hmmm...MacNicol does look hobbity and a bit like Bilbo <img src='/images/smileys/smile.gif' border='0' alt='Smile Smilie' /> . But I have 2 reservations. One is; can he do a [b:2asvzff3]good[/b:2asvzff3] British accent? This is very important. I can't remember seeing him in anything where he does a British accent (didn't he do a wacky Eastern European accent in one of the Ghostbuster movies). And two; he's roughly 55 which is the right age for book Bilbo (and technically film Bilbo too), but judging by film Frodo Hobbits can maintain their youthful good looks until their early 50s <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . So I think PJ and Del Toro will be looking for someone a bit younger.

I wish they would actually use Sir Ian Holm. Surely nowadays the digital technology exists to de-age him  . But fat chance of that happening. Barring that, Colm Meaney (who is also in his mid-50s) would actually be ideal for the part. He looks like a hobbit, looks very Bilboish, has an Irish accent and is also the correct age. But, again, they are more likely to go for someone younger, like Ewan McGregor (who would be quite good if they put a bit of fat on him).

[b:2asvzff3]Gandalf's Beard[/b:2asvzff3]
uhmm... i can't think of an actor that looks more like a Hobbit than this guy: Peter MacNicol... hes not "young" exactly.. but he doesnt look old either..
anyways :P hes the first person i think of when i hear the word "Hobbit"! XD he got the size, looks and the voice for it :P
(just my opinion :X)
Im pretty sure u know him when u see him <img src='/images/smileys/smile.gif' border='0' alt='Smile Smilie' />
Here is a link where u can see him:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001493/

Tell me what you think <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
i could not agree more zackira, a real challenge for del toro.

i personally agree with whoever suggested colm meaney, a real hobbit character from what i have seen of him.

many apologies to arkenstone, no offense meant on my overly aggressive views on mcgregor, you clearly know your stuff and im sure would be interesting to talk to at some point...

your apologetically, erebor217
Colm Meaney is a really good suggestion, <img src='/images/smileys/smile.gif' border='0' alt='Smile Smilie' />

No worries Erebor 217, and like wise, you obviously know what your talking about, . I will be really interested to see what the outcome is! <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />

I completely understand your opinoin on Mcgregor. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />

Hopefully chat in the near future

Yours,

Arkenstone

Like in all good works of fiction much is left up to the readers interpretation.....i see Bilbo as adventurous, just because he makes referance to home on a regular basis does not mean that he has no adventurous tendancies. I would like to use an example here Ranulph Fiennes is mainly motivated by getting home and that is what got him through some of the toughest physical experiences our plannet has to offer! Also on the subject of suitable facial features no one can argue that Elijah Wood has a naturally "Hobbit" like face. I believe Bilbo Baggins is an adventurer at heart he is merely tamed and conditioned by his upbringing and enviroment.

Maybe you should think before you make rash comments,

I am not looking for a disagreement or a quarrel as "they are best left where they are....on other boards",

Yours a rather bemused Arkenstone
Like I said: Finding this very actor is gonna be hard! <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
I agree Mcgreggor would be a good Bilbo, he has the natural eagerness for adventure aswell which is something that Bilbo aquires during the Hobbit :P
Arkenstone ( :ugeek: ), good to hear from you, its just a shame your comment added little to what was a serious debate. clearly mcgregor is adventurous, but we all feel bilbo is, at heart, a homeloving hobbit (his regular references to getting home attest to this). He also has too long and thin a face to suit hobbitkind, he has the features of a man, unlike Astin, who has a shorter and squatter face.

Think before you blog arkenstone. <img src='/images/smileys/vevil.gif' border='0' alt='Very Evil Smilie' />

Disagreements and quarrels from other boards are best left where they are....on other boards. Thanks in advance
hmmm mcgreggor..... i like it i like it but i probably keep seeing him singing that beloved elton john song the whole time. but i think he would be great though! he has that hobbitty look and he also has just the right speech and i think he looks enough like a young ian holm (we're talking loosely here <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> ) but that is a good suggestion i never would have thought about
Hmmm, McGregor never crossed my mind, but he's an excellent actor. I think I like the idea 8-) .

[b:vgh9gk66]Gandalf's Beard[/b:vgh9gk66]
McGregor certanly has the looks of a hobbit, but this movie is going to be huge! The actor, I think, will be picked with great concideration. And the person, the lucky person who will be able to play Bilbo, has to live up to all the expectations around the world!

I dont know about you, but I think it will be really tough finding him.. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
I Think Ewan McGregor can do the job
Hes not A bad actor given a script to work with
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3546188288/nm0000191
this is what we got so far: Jack Black, Peter MacNiol, Colm Meany, Ewan McGregor, Tom Payne, Ben Wilshaw, Michael Sheen, Rowan Atkinson, James McAvoy, Martin Freeman, and Nick Frost.... but I do believe that Colm Meany is the current favorite  well i'm all for Meany right now but Atkinson was tempting
Is there any chance someone could write all suggestions for the role so far?
Personally, I like the idea of Jack Black palying a hobbit :P He already looks hobbit like as it is.
I love Jack Black. He would be great in a Hobbit Spoof  . But I couldn't really see him in [i:2oys7loj][b:2oys7loj]The[/b:2oys7loj][/i:2oys7loj] Hobbit unless he could pull of a GOOD British accent <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> .

[b:2oys7loj]Gandalf's Beard[/b:2oys7loj]
Jack Black har already played Frodo in a LOTR spoof. Made by MTV, of course, and in this spoof, he kind of looks like a hobbit. I really dont think he is suited for the REAL role though, its too big and serious for Mr. Black.
