Beorn helped turn the tide of the Battle of 5 armies. He slew the Goblin King
See Beorn topic on wikipedia for details

Beorn adds to the adventure and adds mystery and excitement to the story.

The meeting with Beorn also breaks up the dwarves' long trek to the mountain in a refreshing way.

Beorn was influential in helping to protect Thorin and Company from the wargs (wolves that can talk) and the goblins.

whoops. my apologies. I didn't search through past posts before starting this thread.
Great to see that the character Beorn has a part to play in the upcoming movies.

Have often thought that the Rankin Bass cartoon classic version of the Hobbit was not complete as it did not include Beorn.
You are right on, Blazar. Beorn is utterly essential, and I think Del Toro is really relishing the chance to be able to work with him.
I agree Beorn is a must have for the movie...
Originally I thought he would be cut. But with two movies to cover the story, I would say he is back.
And given Del Toro's love of putting Ron Pearlman in extensive costumes, I can easily see him getting the part.
Beorn is great! A Skin-changer! Please keep him Del Toro :| :| :| :| :|
Well yeah, Beorn I think adds mystery as the group journeys, such as when the Dwarves and Bilbo are running through the woods, Bilbo swears he sees a Bear-Like form following them all the way to Mirkwood, sort of like how Frodo Sees Gollum on their journey in the Fellowship. It kind of links Bilbo and Frodo together even further.
Yes, please keep Beorn in the Hobbit Movies. :ugeek:
I was thinking about Beorn, and a few ways to spice his character up. Here they are: A "thing" with someone. There is no love in The Hobbit- there needs to be! Maybe one of his animals could help. Too weird? Now at the moment he changes into a giant bear. Why not a giant wolverine? Better still, why not a dwarf eating wolverine, who punches gerbils? An entirely fictitious scene could be added- Berorn playing poker with his horses. I'm so wasted working in a supermarket...
How about instead of changing into a bear, he changes into a gremlin? <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />

Well now that it's official that Beorn is being included, what do people want him to be like? And does anyone know anything about Mikael Persbrandt (hope I spelled that right), the actor cast as Beorn?
