Hi, just asking for advice and/or ideas  related to The Hobbit.

A while back, I had the idea of making a short film, and now have most of the equipment (not professional stuff  ) left over in the cupboard as this fell into abandonment because of a unfocused subject. But being inspired by the flares and great ideas coming from all over the place ( mostly here) I am considering making a fan film set in the hobbit [b:1mir9a6y]book[/b:1mir9a6y], not the movies when they come. But yet again I come into the barrier of subject. So I now want to re-ewaken this fantasy, and get some good suggestions .

We just need to be aware that this will be very low budget (most attire will ether be hand made or from markets), but at a push I can buy re-enactment weapons :| . I also have an abundance of local wood and field land, as well as a safe waterway and a canoe :?: at my disposal. As a last note I would also like to avoid special effects .

Please be aware that this relys on local interest, and if I lose it, then the project gets the boot

Aule
Could you explain further Aule what you mean by "set in the hobbit book."
I mean it in the way that it would be a scene from The Hobbit in its book form, and not in portrayal of the movie characters when the movie is released.
I get you now. So do you have a particular scene in mind from the book? what was your original project that was abandoned going to be about? You could always make it about hobbits rather about The Hobbit- do Bullroarer Tooks first ever horse ride across the fields of Tuckborough!
All great ideas 8-) , and as I did have a sort of short "tales of the shire"(cheesy I know  ) idea at first, I hadn't thought of Bullroar yet, and thinking about it it would suit perfectly with my location, and I have a friend who rides, so its plausable to get a horse. I have a very sketchy outline of what the subject is going to be, thats why Im posting here.

As for the previous project, It was going to be a accompaniment to some of my poetry. Hope that helps.
What if you thought a bit laterally, Aule?

Maybe you could choose your scene, but change your hobbit (s?) into another little person of some sort - and change names or races of any other folk or creatures you have. Then you could use your own imagination to change anything you want so none of us would be the wiser. (Tolkien was a big copier himself!) This way you would have an [i:2hcmd9kx]original[/i:2hcmd9kx] short fantasy film. I don't know about these things, but I'm guessing an 'original' film might be welcomed more readily than pure fan-fic when you present your credentials and (future) collection of films at the big film studios. Film companies are presumably always looking for new talent - and new ideas!

If you really just want to do The Hobbit, of course, I think Mr Tyrant is on the money. Bullroarer Took and the invention of golf would be a hoot! There would be heaps of other possibles. Have you anything particularly in mind yet that we fellow forumers might help you develop? (I must say, the mere mention of your poetry being in it sounds exciting!)
Hi Odo!

I had thought of using the hobbit as a base for branching out into some of the myths and legends that no doubt inspired Tolkien, and I am quite interested in that vein of thinking and evolving the poetry into a bardic narrative would be a fine way to compliment this (though not as wailing as the animated LOTR hopefully  ). But to find my style I would wish to keep my feet on familiar ground, and I have plenty of input from this forum . Liking the Bullroarer line of thought at the moment, hobbit with a splash of adventure .
If you wanted to portray a scene from The Hobbit maybe you could do the part when they cross the river in Mirkwood.
You know when Bomfur (the fat one) falls in and falls asleep. I just thought about that when you said you had a canoe and safe waterway
8-)
I can just picture it now Fimbrethll .....

Its a sodden morning on the Oxford canal, and 14 cloaked figures wish to cross. They were forewarned of the waters of the barge-laden slop are enchanted and any who wish to cross must not touch the rancid depths or drink from there waters. Sitting on the other bank, a small canoe is tethered to the other side, and so the 14 have endeavoured to catch it with grappling hooks. This only resulted in one of their party tumbling into the waters, and landing on (or rather being enveloped by) the silt of muck, sweet-rappers, and discarded bikes. So now they have an extra ''pack'' to carry across on the boat, one unfortunately smelling of 100 years of fishing bait thrown in to no good use. Upon their crossing, a bargeman approaches on a narrowboat, shrugs his shoulders at the unoccupied boat, and continues on down the canal.

In the words of Odo; " 8-) "
Ah... not quite the enchanted stream I was thinking of... no trees? But at least the water sounds mirky... :?
Can always go further up for trees, but its quite boggy there, no definite banks. Alternatively there is the local river, if a bit fast flowing, but I know the place well. Just thinking about the (bellow) mill weir, really atmospheric there (shallow, a bit far to lug kit though  ). Any thoughts on which sounds best? The river is [b:9e2mjriy]very[/b:9e2mjriy] dangerous at the best of times, although it is quite wooded about the banks.
I'm not sure if you meant to or not, Aule, but you sound like you live in an idyllic setting. I live among dirty filthy disgusting gum trees, but you live among rivers and bogs and mill weirs and trees... are you in Hobbit Heaven, perchance?
No, just Oxfordshire . (though I dont consider bogs ''idillic'' )

EDIT: If you want idillic with a capital I, then I have relations in the highlands.
Many of us who live under pretty but human-unfriendly gum trees would die to live in Oxfordshire.... Ox....Ford....Shire... cor! That's in The North Farthing, isn't it? Oh Aule! You lucky, lucky b#*^#+s& :!: (With apologies to Monty Python!)
I must admit that some of the romance is taken out of it if your village is nicknamed "village of the damned" (and I don't know why)
Trust me; damnation doesn't sound too bad when you're living in the middle of Nowhere, Suburbia.
Don't try and divert us, Aule, we know your game!

If you were to let on how wonderfully delightful Ox Ford Shire really is, you'd have hosts of Scots and Australians and New Zealanders and every other race, and (worst of all?) Americans swooping in to ruin your perfect countryside and seriously upset your idyllic lifestyle! (Oh to have a bog in my own backyard! That's the life! 8-) )

As I said, we're not stupid, Aule! :x (I'm booking my ticket this very minute!)

On further consideration, I don't blame Aule at all for wanting to deter people.
Oh no, I don't live in Oxfordshire! I live in..... er...... Helcaraxe  ! Yes, desolate, cold, nasty place, no houses, just ice..... (not even a table or river for a nice second breakfast :o ).

Though being half Scottish, I wouldn't mind the relatives coming to stay (not to sure about them there foreigners though, but cant hurt getting some culture in my noggin thinking about it ).
Hope you're not too uncomfy in your igloo .

Don't try and fool me, Cobbers! I'm an [i:3tl2h1pj]Australian[/i:3tl2h1pj]! The fool who thinks I'm a fool is no fool! No.... the foolish would seek to fool the foolish.. not what I'm looking for... Anyhow, I'm driving to the airport... See you soon, Aule! Put the billy on!

[[Scottish, hey?! The top half or the bottom half? :?]]
Hey all!

Back from a profitable weekend in junkshops, and I have returned with a sword  (false bladed of course)! Cast brass hilt, stainless steel blade, ornate scabbard and most important of all, a dwarf on the handle :ugeek: . I shall have some pictures in a moment, just have to get them online....

EDIT: Okay, here we go.... not sure what size this will be  , and sorry if their a bit low quality. Tell us what you think
