Have just consulted the Natural History section of my Tolkien Encyclopedia. It mentions insects such as:
Dumbledoors - from the poem "Errantry". A ferocious breed of winged insect.
Flies of Mordor - They were grey brown and black and marked with a red eye on their backs. They were also bloodsucking and lived in swarms (uuugh).
Hummerhorns - another viscious winged insect that apparently attacked a knight in one of the hobbit poems. Either they were huge or the knight was small. It may have been hobbit humour.
Neekerbreekers - aka midges. There is an illustration resembling crickets
Spiders - I will leave that to Ungoliant
Wilwarin - forest inhabbiting butterflies. Elves found them delightful.
