I think its the hard and pretty much tasteless buscuit called cram, which though quite bland was nevertheless very nutritional.

No, I didn't disable our Book Covers in our Art Gallery menu over there on your the left. That happened before I posted the above question. Besides, I don't think Taz has this one in his collection. I think this was the one I read in 1967 and gave to my little brother. I also think it was done by the same artist and in the same style as the covers on the editions of the trilogy that Ballantine also issued at that time. Of course I may be wrong as it has been many years since I have seen those covers, but the artwork from the that trilogy graces Donald Swann's music book, The Road Goes Ever On, which I still have.

Okay, the answer is: "A lion, two emus, and a tree bearing bulbous fruit." What that had to do with the story I know not, but I remember now that the cover was similar to those of the trilogy which showed: Hobbit, the bulbous fruited tree, two emus and black birds on FotR; a mountain, tower, spider, river, and ariel black riders on TTT; and a volcano, war banners, mountains, and monsters on RotK.
