hey Val, check your answer for your last quiz. Steelsheen is apparently the name for Eowyn in ROTK appendix after Eomer's description for the 3rd line of the Kings of Rohan.
From ROTK appendix...
Quote:
Eomer was like his fathers before him: but Eowyn was slender and tall, with a grace and pride that came to her out of the South from Morwen of Lossarnach, whom the Rohirrim had called Steelsheen.
I take that to mean Morwen, not Eowyn, was called Steelsheen.

Also from Foster's Complete Guide To Middle Earth
Quote:
Morwen was called Steelsheen by the Rohirrim.
Oh, dang it...
Lol. Great try uruk-slayer. Cool Smilie

Anyone working on my quiz? I sure hope so. There aren't many questions here, so I suppose everything's clear? Disturbed Smilie
Tommie,

I love your quiz. There are some really great questions, some are easy, some are hard it is a wonderful mix.
My actual question is: in what case does he use the incorrect forms "dwarves" and "dwarvish", uruk_slayer. You can find this somewhere in an introduction, to give another hint. Big Smile Smilie It is stated quite clearly there that our professor only used the incorrect forms (those are "dwarves" and "dwarvish") in one particular case, and that's the one I'm looking for. I hope it's clear now. Big Smile Smilie

Ok, I have decided to give you all some more time (I didn't realise it would be that hard), so you now have until 9 May to send in your answers. You can do that by private messaging me, or by mailing me at:

tommie_the_first@yahoo.co.uk

I will see how many answers I got in by the 9th, and if necessary, I'm willing to give you another week or so after that, but don't rely on it. Wink Smilie

Ok good luck to you all, and I hope to get some answers sometime.

Love

Tommie
Ok I am really late on this but...

congratulations! I tried to get my quiz in in time, but as you know I wasn't able to. Good quiz though Val, thanks!
Hopefully I'll have better luck with Tommy's. Big Smile Smilie
Ok folks I'm having some problems with my private postBodys as well as with my mail. I can't (or hardly) send any postBodys, but I think I can receive them ok. But just to be sure post something here if you have sent them in, and I'll post something in return when I've received them. I hope the problems won't last too long and hopefully they'll be sorted out before you start sending. Would be a real joke if they didn't work then. Tongue Smilie Oh well, in that case I'll just have to make an emailaddress somewhere so we can get on with it. Maybe I could do that right now. Hmm. I will.

Yahoo! Animated Wink Smilie Just got myself a new email:

tommie_the_first@yahoo.co.uk

Keep in mind that this email is only for sending in your answers to the quiz . I will be checking it regularly while the quiz is up, but I will not continue to use it after the quiz. Perhaps for a next quiz, who knows, but not for all day use. Thanks! Cool Smilie
...or you could just private postBody me. Tongue Smilie Receiving is fine, I just can't send any postBodys. lol Sorry about the fuss. Tongue Smilie
Ok folks, I'm starting to get worried. It's now April 24, six days before the end of the quiz, and I haven't received any answers yet. Orc Going Huh Smilie

Who's working on it? When do you think you'll have finished it? Do you need some more time? If yes, how much? Question Smilie

Let me know, please. Thanks!
Don't worry too much Tommie. I've found in the past most people send their answers in at the last minute. I'm afraid, like Perwing, I haven't had a chance to start on it yet. I've been busy trying to fit selling a house and buying a new one into my work schedule. It hasn't left me with a lot of time for much else. I'll have a crack at your quiz in the coming week if I get a chance, but I'll have to do it ad-lib (Val will show just how little he really knows).
I haven't worked on it for a couple weeks, but I've answered the first half, having only drawn four blanks that I couldn't easily find their answers. I will finish the rest and work on those hard ones in the time remaining.

I have just finished fine tuning my rendition of Pachelbel's Canon in D for my String Sextet on my Commodore and will now have a tad bit more time to spent on Tommie's quiz.
I've got all but four answers and they're REALLY hard and obscure to find. I could use a couple of more days past the deadline but if not, i'll send it in to you late (w/o looking at the posted answers). but i agree with everyone else, this is getting to be crunch time, i'm working on finals and presentations.
A point of clarification if you would please:

In English, the only correct plural of “dwarf” is “dwarfs” and the adjective is “dwarfish”. You may have noticed though, that professor Tolkien sometimes uses the (incorrect) “dwarves” and “dwarvish”. In what case only does he use these incorrect forms?

My friend and i were talking about this one and we came to the conclusion that you might be asking for the cases in which Tolkien uses the CORRECT form of "dwarfs" instead of his usual "dwarves"? Is this what you mean or are you asking when Tolkien uses "dwarves" as opposed to "dwarfs"?
One is just a straight quote, another one is a lyric, and the last one is the one that asks, "Who sang s/he was in a hurry?" That one is a booger among snot!
Oh, my, i forgot all about the quizzes. I have not even looked at yours in so long. I think i have it about half done. Thanks for extending the due date.

I have just e-mailed my answers to you Tommie. It was a great quiz, thanks! Big Smile Smilie

I didn't know you played music Grondy. I am making an improvision of Canon in D for the piano. Wink Smilie
Thank you Samwise! Just checking if I got your answers ok. And I did. I'll be correcting them over the weekend. Big Smile Smilie
My sincere apologies to everyone, thanks to my zombie-brain I thought I had said the last day you could send in your answers was the 7th, but it was indeed the 9th. Thanks for letting me know, uruk_slayer! Disturbed Smilie

So that makes two answers. Anyone else? Please? Mellie? Grondy? Val? Anyone??? Disturbed Smilie Tongue Smilie
Sorry Tommie, I've some severe time problems at the moment due to selling/buying houses and something happening at work. Apart from struggling to keep abreast of the forum, I'm not finding much time to anything else at the moment. Sad Smilie
I just sent mine in; however, I'll be lucky to get 50 correct. Those quotations were toughies. Elf Confused Smilie Elf With a Big Grin Smilie
Sorry to hear about that Val... I hope things get solved somehow soon.

Thanks Grondy, just sent you a reply. And just got uruk_slayer's as well.

So that makes three then. Anyone else working on it and/or in need of some more time? I would prefer 4 or 5 answerers (is that a word?) really. Disturbed Smilie
Quote:
I would prefer 4 or 5 answerers (is that a word?) really.
Answerers would be the correct form of the plural of answerer, being one who answers; however, a better word might be participants, being those who take part (partake). I think. Orc Going Huh Smilie
Gotcha, thanks Grondy! I'll try to remember that one. Orc Grinning Smilie

Ok as I don't think I'll have time to post the answers next week anyway, I'll give whoever is still working on it time to send in their answers until the 16th of May . And that's the final limit. Seriously. I mean it. Big Laugh Smilie
Thank you soooo much Tommie. I am still working on it. I was concerned that i had missed the deadline
Yipppppeeeeee i can still try answer everything
Awww, that's too bad Perwing. More luck next time! Smile Smilie

Great. So with Mellie that makes at least four participants (see, I remembered, Grondy! Big Smile Smilie ). Only waiting for Sam's and Uruk's reply now. Big Smile Smilie
I am rather busy at present, but I did get your PM Tommy and don't worry I will send you the revisions ASAP (meaning...tomorrow perhaps?) Don't worry I will get them to you.
Don't worry Sam, take your time. Before the 16th will do. Big Smile Smilie And Val's signed up after all, so that makes 4 already! Big Smile Smilie Big Smile Smilie God I'm happy now. Tongue Smilie
Ok I'm rather busy at the moment, but I'll try to post the answers here sometime this (meaning next) week. Big Laugh Smilie

Sorry, I've been too busy with one thing and another of late to be able to make one. I'll try to make one for next month if anyone else has one ready for now.
Way to go uruk_slayer, Samwisegamgee, Val, and especially Tommie Bombadillo whose quiz weeded out we users of the indices and the 'Encyclopedia of Arda'.
Samwise, I was planning to mail you but your address doesn't seem to be working (the tolkienmail one)... Orc Going Huh Smilie Could you PM another address (if you have one) or can I pm you? Mail would be a lot easier for me... Anyway, thanks!! Big Smile Smilie
I was wondering if I could post a set-amount of say 30 quiz questions like the one at the start of the post? Though be warned they will be HARD, and I will use all the books ,from 'the Hobbit' to 'HoME 12; Peoples of M-E'.
Go for it Findekanu. Having seen the references you regularly quote, I don't doubt it truely will be a hard one. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Sure, do it Findekano. But don't be surprised if some of us get less than 21 correct, not having read or even having access to the H.O.M.E. volumes. All we can do is try. I own the first five, but have only read Lost Tales I (many moons ago) and am still working my way through Unfinished Tales.
That sounds like a great idea to me. I look forward to attempting to complete it. I have all except for the last 2 books. This ought to be interesting. I am going to try to get another quiz up soon as well. Congratulations to everyone that finished Tommie's quiz. I wish I could have. I am still trying to work on it, but things are going very slowly around here lately.
I could do a quiz too, when Mellie's and Findekano's are finished. Smile Smilie
i've got one in the works too and i hope everyone will like it when i get done with it. this is great, i think we're stepping it up a notch by pushing ourselves and the limits of our knowledge.
That's really great! Looking forward to it all (though it will be very hard for me indeed, not having access to the HOME books and the other stuff), but I'll give it a try once my exams are over (on the 23rd). Orc Grinning Smilie
Dear Valedhelgwath,

wow tommie, where are you going to school? is it summer school or are you a grad student? if you're still in the regular session, that's got to be a downer.
Sorry about that Val,
It's the one that was posted on 31/8/2002. I would also like the one posted on 6/10/2002. I thought they were awesome and even though everyone sent there answers in already I'd still like to try them and see how well i know middle-earth.

Also Mellie I would love to try your first quiz as well.

thank you both.

Orc Going Huh Smilie No actually. I'm in the regular session (undergraduate, first year). And we actually finish quite early. I know people who start when I finish (which is on the 23rd) and who end on the 3rd of July. Now that's what I call a downtoner. At secondary school we finished somewhere near the 20th to get our report card some week later. So here in Belgium it's quite normal. Do you finish earlier, or later, or whatever?

Moonstar: would you like my quiz too?

thank you for your quizes, I really appreciate it.

Does your school year start in August to get out so early in May? Back in the bad old days, we started third week in September and went to the end of May with no time out for snow, floods, or mud.

Of course where I went to Uni was the only place on earth (we thought at the time) that you could be standing ankle deep in mud and still have dust blowing in your face. Elk Grinning Smilie When I started it was a still 'Cow College'; however, by the time I got my degree, it had changed to the 'Udder U'. Animated Wink Smilie
