How many times have you read the book?

I must have read lotr at least 20 times the Hobbit as well. The trouble with me is that i suffer from ADHD,
so every time i read it, its like reading it for the first time (almost). Not that its a bad thing. Still read it now
and come across pages i' dont ever remember reading before. Exciting sometimes like when the extended DVD's
came out and you were looking for the new bits. (now where was i)

How many times have you read the book?

I first read the book back in December 2003 (but I didn't see the films until a couple of years later). I obsessively read every last word, including the songs (which to my nine or ten year old mind were fairly boring; I just didn't want to miss anything!). Since then I have not read the entire book in order even once. I've tried a few times but never gotten far. My current attempt though has gotten to the end of The Council of Elrond; the farthest I've come yet.

However, I have re-read (and re-re-read) bits and pieces of the book so many times that I could be said to have read the whole thing about 4-6 times: much more in some cases, maybe a bit less in others (Book IV used to have a hard time holding my interest for some reason). I'm determined to get the whole way through this time; I just need to find the time between RL obligations. :D

I've read the whole book probably ten or fifteen times over the years. I have got to Lothlorion a lot more. The Fellowship is my favorite. I think this is because it's closer in tone to The Hobbit. I'm not sure I'd ever want to have ADHD, but I suppose if it means you can read LotR with a somewhat fresh mind each time, well, it might not be all that bad.

oooh- now there's a question. I first read it when I was 12 or 13- so must be into double figures reading it cover to cover but been several years now since I did that- these days I tend to dip into it and just read sections. I found when I was a teenager Fell was my favourite. In fact I'd read it 3 times before I even got hold of TT. But as age has crept over me I've found I now enjoy the politics of Return more and more and the histroy of Gondor, Arnor and the Rohirrim.

Hmmm, I first read the Silmarillion when I was 13, so working back a couple of years, I must have been 10 or 11 when I first read LotR, and about 7 or 8ish when I first read The Hobbit. And given that I re-read the books (LotR and The Hobbit) every few years since, probably I've read it about a dozen times straight through, and bits and pieces numerous times in between. I bought a new edition at the time of the last film, but I misplaced it about a year and a half ago after I last re-read it  .

My father was reading the Hobbit when i was 8 and after he was finished I picked it up and couldnt put it down, went on to LOTR right after and have been a fanatic since.Considering that was 32 years ago ive probably read LOTR at least once every other year since with no clear favorite. The history and annuls alone in Return are some of my favorite writings of JRRT,which of course led me to the Simillarion and his other works.

I am currently reading LOTR for the 27th time. I read a lot of books, but this is the only one that I read over and over again (aside from The Hobbit, which I have read 4 or 5 times). I used to read it in a few long sittings. The great thing about having read it so many times is that now I can even read it a few paragraphs at a time. When life gets too busy for me to have time to read a new book, I can pick up LOTR and read a few pages or even just a few paragraphs and know exactly what is going on and where I am in the story.

I have read the Hobbit many, many times, it seems that book never gets old to me.

I have also read the Fellowship of the Ring many, many times.

I have also read Return of the King many, many times.

However, I always find myself skipping over The Two Towers once I get to a certain point, the same thing happened to me when I read the Lord of the Rings the first time, but I soon picked back up on it.

I probably have only read the Two Towers about two or three times. Shame, shame, I know.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot. The Silmarillion! I have read it about... once, though I often go back to it and read certain parts over again for reference. :)

I've read The Hobbit many times more than LotR, which I have read fully maybe 10 times. I've read TFotR almost as many times as The Hobbit. The Hobbit is my all time favorite. TFotR comes close second! ;)

LOTR.... I stopped counting after #12. I usually read it through every 2-3 years, that must put me in the twenties at least! I am the Game Master for a Middle Earth Role-Playing campaign, so I have done numerous mini-reads for background information or scene-setting details. In fact, I have an old worn PB edition that is highlighted and annotated solely as a gaming reference! Need to get similar versions for Hobbit and Unfinished Tales too someday.
