In the last paragraph
The new ending, he said, is actually truer, chronologically, to the tale than the book.
I think we can assume this means we will have the scene shifts a little more frequently than in the book, so we will be able to follow the three groups almost concurrently, but I still don't think he will use split-screen.

FotR also ended in a slightly different part than the book. I think the more frequent scene shifts is a good idea and would be very helpful in getting the bigger picture and organising the order of concurrent events. I've always had trouble keeping track of what's going on and when whenever I read the book cos it often follows the separate characters for a couple of chapters which means that you often have to think back in time when it shifts to the other parts of the story.

Okay, so I'm guessing the film will end with the events of March 7th TA3019. That will be three days after the Battle of Helm's Deep and the destruction of Isengard by the Ents. Saruman will have been cast down, and Aragorn will be about to enter the Paths of the Dead.

On this day Frodo meets Faramir and is taken by him to Henneth Annun, the hidden camp behind the waterfall.

Failing that, it could be March 12th. That would place Aragorn somewhere near Pelargir, the Ents mopping up in Northern Rohan, Faramir retreating from Osgilliath towards Minas Tirith, Lorian being attacked from Dol Guldur (and hopefully Haldir fighting here rather than at Helm's Deep), and Frodo being mauled by Shelob.

I'm voting for your March 7th date. I don't think we get to see Shelob in LOTR: TTTand PJ says in the extended version of the LOTR: FOTR commentary that there will be no Scouring of the Shire: Frodo's Mirror of Galadriel vision was his concession to that chapter. Which means Saruman will be killed at the end of the second movie, probably skewered on his own petard (like in that infamous picture).
