but they are sooooo wrapped up in rolling the dice and not in the story that when we are around that group, it seems rather boring.
That can often seem the case. I used to find the game really came alive weeks or months after particular games when all the dice throwing had been forgotten and all that was left was the memory of the story. We'd then spend hours sat around the pub reminiscing over past battles, heroic acts, and how devious some of my traps/ambushes had been.

In the summer I started playing with my son. He was having a great time until he became trapped in a room full of giant spiders. The look of panic and horror on his face was wonderful to see.

Ok, Val, I started down at the bottom today. Thought that maybe it would be faster to get through the forums.
If we can get it moving once more, participants will probably call in here first while they are fresh, before visiting the rest of the board.
I thought that statement was particularly funny, since I did start at the bottom today to see how you liked my suggestions. lol I guess you are correct.
Roleplaying is traditionally done in dingy little backrooms late at night when players are either too tired or too drunk (substitute your own vice here) to realise the danger of their next step until the trap has sprung and taken off half their leg.
I guess you are correct there too. My husband has told me stories about when he was a huge RPGer. However, since I am new to Roleplaying, and we have a game going with my 8 year old son, we don't do it very late at night, much less with any other vice. So, I guess, by traditional standards, our little game that we play is not quite as interesting. Matthew also is involved with another RPG group, that is also in a more family environment, but they are sooooo wrapped up in rolling the dice and not in the story that when we are around that group, it seems rather boring. My only other experience with rollplaying was in a similar situation to what you described, but I only played for about 2 or 3 weeks because they were such idiots, and really mean to me because I was new and did not understand all the rules. That was about 10 years ago, and it was a very bad experience for me, so I have been very leary of RPG's until lately. The ones in the Guilds above are the first times, that I have ever attempted anything without dice. So, this thread is kinda intimidating to me. I want to start, but afraid, I will mess something up, or get yelled at for making a mistake, or not understanding what is going on. I will figure out my weapons, and see if Matthew has any suggestions for my character, and when we get back from alabama, I will start. Just be very patient with me, and realize that I can be quite dense in these areas. lol. But it really does sound like fun, and I am sure that my friends here at PT won't treat me the same way as the others did when I first tried RPGing.

Thanks for responding to my note.

Mellie

Now Val knows he was validated all along. Once an Orc always an orc. ;)
Maybe if you move this up to the roleplaying guilds, more people would respond. I don't usually make it down this far when I am in the forums. I make so many post that by the time I get down here, I am too tired to think about what to say

I know what you are saying Mellie, but Roleplaying is traditionally done in dingy little backrooms late at night when players are either too tired or too drunk (substitute your own vice here) to realise the danger of their next step until the trap has sprung and taken off half their leg.

To be honest, the game started in this section and I never thought about moving it until now. Over here, I can keep several relevant threads together, which would be my arguement for keeping it here. If we can get it moving once more, participants will probably call in here first while they are fresh, before visiting the rest of the board.

As this is my first attempt at a cyber game, I am still getting used to a system with no dice or tables to determine actions, plus trying to get used to players not actually following the leads I place into the game. In the past I have always tried to lead players rather than push them into situations, trying to create the illusion that it was their idea all along. The danger is, however, they often choose not to follow, and end up going round and round in circles or disappearing into uncharted territory. Often with my old group, if I didn't give them a bit of a shove, they'd finish up fighting each other.
By the way I have updated my character a bit. instead of being an elf, since there are too many, I am now a gnome. Is that ok? I did not add a new post, just edited my old one. I have everything except for weapons. I have not decided about those yet. Let me know what you think and I will start trying to play.
No problems Mellie (actually I had no problem with the number of elves either). Just jump in whenever you feel fit. There's a party round Halo's at the moment, but be warned, you might finish up on the menu.

Hi Uruk_slayer. Welcome to Planet Tolkien, and particularly to our Roleplaying section. Most of the other players seem to be playing at mingling with crowds at the moment, but I'm sure our resident Uruk, Halo-Black, will be pleased to meet you.

Please don't slay me. I promise not to eat any of your relatives *goes back to munching on a MacHobbit Burger (now with extra hobbit!)*

Well, I will read what has been going on in Many Meetings, and try to join in sunday or monday. Any suggestions, or anything, that may be helpful to a new online RPGer, would be greatly appreciated.

Is this ever gonna start??????
When history looks down its weird vestigial stump of a nose at us, it'll have a lot of very shitty things to say.
