Should Legolas be in the Hobbit

Not trying to knock Legolas or Beren by any means but I kinda thought they embellished his "ass kicking" way beyond what the books described. It's been too long since I've read LOTR but I think I remember him being a little arrogant at times for my liking as well (I guess being the son of a king might do that).

I agree, yet in the movies he seemed abit air-headed rather than arrogant. It didn't help that he was also the character who told the audience what was going on. "Orcs!" "Goblins!" "A diversion!" and I know there are more instances. I think they kind of twisted his character, maybe for Blooms sake!

I agree that the Legolas of the films is basically a pretty-boy to bring in teen audiences, he's not really that much like the Legolas in the books. But then the Aragorn of the films isn't much like the book one either, nor the Gimli, nor Merry, nor Pippin, or Faramir, or Denethor.... I could go on but you get the point!

:P Pshaw!!! Legolas rocked. I thought Bloom captured very well the character of Legolas.

Not to mention that all the other characters were brilliant portrayals also  (but the debate on them can rage on the appropriate threads...though I'm a bit worn on those debates right now  ).

Sorry GB,

You've probably noticed I digress really easily so the forum is tough for me sometimes

Back on topic, Legolas was cool but I don't see him having any significant part in the hobbit (according to the book anyway)

The only mention of Legolas before LOTR that I'm aware of is after Gandalf becomes suspicious of Bilbo's ring and sends Aragorn to find Gollum who is then left in the keeping of Legolas who in turn lets gollum get away. :x

OK, he doesn't "let him get away," but i'm partial to Aragorn over Legolas and Legolas botches all of Aragorn's hard work

Digression is our favourite pastime at this forum  . I'm just making a bit more of an effort to keep things going in the right general direction today.

You bring up some interesting points about book Legolas I had never really thought about :? .

I thought Bloom was given some incredibly stupid lines ("A diversion" comes to mind), but I don't blame him for that. I really didn't find book-Legolas to be particularly memorable, so I think Bloom and the filmmakers had a bit more room to work with in bringing Legolas to film. I don't like him being Superman crossed with a model, but he had some nice moments. All in all I liked Bloom in POTC much better, though.

Yup. Leaving aside the subjective question of if the film characters were compelling or well-written, comparing them to the book characters and noting the differences is a pretty straightforward process.
