It's interesting to note, Tin, that many upper and middle class men in T's day spoke to each other (at least in writing) in what might be thought a slightly gay way nowadays. "My Dearest John," etc. Friendships could be close, I cite Sam and Frodo as an example, very intimate, but in no ways homosexual. I don't know that we'd have to be all that precious about Beren and Finrod's friendship. Finrod and Barahir's was close, and then Beren and Finrod's after that. It is platonic love. (And I do apologize for being so giggly about it earlier! I couldn't resist! :oops: )

As an aside, I find it amazing how often many "rednecks"and "sport jocks", who supposedly despise gay folk, love to go to fancy dress parties as women!!! And how many get all affectionate and teary when drunk - you should see the antics of some of my really butch mates! Phew! :shock: Life is truly an education!

Anyway :idea: hopefully we've got it all sorted now and get on with our movie planning?!

That reminds me of a scene in one of Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob movies where a LotR fan character angrily says "They aren't gay, they're Hobbits" :lol: .

Funny line you quoted but I don't know the movie (movies?) you refer to. I hope they weren't referring to Sam and Frodo, or Merry and Pippin? I'm almost certain they weren't gay.

This part of the conversation reminds me of a juvenile but HILARIOUS remix of the Houses of Healing scene on youtube. Probably not suitable for prepubescents, but there's nothing at all pornographic in it. It just emphasizes the suggestiveness of the scene :lol: . It's fine for teens and above (indeed juvenile delinquents are more likely to be amused than "adults" <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> ).

My sound's not working for some reason, GB, but as a silent movie it is pretty dubious. I see what you mean. Mr McKellen is gay, isn't he? And his Gandalf looks pretty gay too - with happiness, I presume!

Alrighty Then!!! It's come to my attention that this new thread is past due <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . Largely because of one of The Hobbit Forum's infamous Digressions (in no small part of my own :roll: ).

In any case, above are a few posts originating on "The Beren and Luthien (the movie): directors and actors" thread. Please feel free to continue the conversation.

Post your fave youtube humourous Tolkien links, Jokes, Satires etc. here. Just remember to give us due warning of content, and try to keep it at least PG or R rated, no XXX :P . In repsonse to what [i:384pjcya]Odo Banks[/i:384pjcya] said at the start of this thread, I agree that Frodo and Sam's relationship would be considered slightly gay had it been published in 2009 as apposed to the 1940s/1950s. I also think that in a book written today a character like Frodo's or any of the Hobbits would have been encouraged to be a bit manlier (I suppose [b:384pjcya]man[/b:384pjcya]lier says it all really but anyway), because he is always getting carried and lifted around as if he were a child, he also does very little for him self on the quest, he gets help from the fellowship and Sam because he's a Ringbearer but I think today it would be considered going a bit beyond that.

I suppose, in conclusion, that times change, and considering Tolkien wasn't gay we can only guess the books were meant to be orientated towards a hetrosexual point of view.

In the cases of Frodo's and Sam's relationship, though, I wouldn't say they were gay. Would Sam have married Rosie Cotten if they were really gay? No, I don't think so....

Well it [i:wtnkghl1]is[/i:wtnkghl1] considered gay by a lot of people in the current decade, though I agree that it wasn't what Tolkien intended. I think part of the issue is that the master/servant relationship of the Victorian period and the officer/batman relationship of WWI are both long gone by now so the cultural context of audiences is changing. ...not really. Frodo does a good deal on his own, though of course he has help. He makes the decision to leave the Fellowship on his own and doesn't ask Sam to come with him. He's able to assert himself over Gollum an make progress towards 'taming' him into Smeagol, but does not make the mistake of [i:wtnkghl1]trusting[/i:wtnkghl1] Gollum or alienating Sam (unlike the movies). He's able to keep on top of things quite well until they get into Mordor itself when the Ring finally causes him to start despairing. Then, Sam steps in.

I loved that youtube thingee you put on. Very clever. Very funny. I must work my way through this thread if that's indicative of what folk have posted here!

As to all the 'gay' chat on this thread - it occurs to me that perhaps Sam and Frodo were gay, but because of the times they lived in, they could not fulfill their love (at least no publicly). Perhaps that's why Frodo went to Valinor in the end - to seek relief from his unrequited love. Also, did you notice Rosie Cotton never talks. Is this because in the (secret) gay hobbit world, women can't say anything of value so must remain silent, and yet they still exist physically, having some use as cattle (chattels?) for breeding purposes - you know, for the breeding of more gay children. This is another of Sam's sacrifices, you see, that we did not know about. Sam has chosen to be bi-sexual so the gay line will never die out? If I'm right about this, Tolkien's work is even deeper than I thought. Wow!

While I definitely don't want to downplay the psychological challenges Frodo went through, he did sustain physical wounds twice (from the Witch-king on Weathertop and from Shelob). Admittedly though, these were intimately tied to the psychological troubles. I think the physical trek to Mount Doom, especially once in Mordor proper, took its toll as well, but again, this was exacerbated by the psychological effects of the Ring.

He did sustain the physical injury on weathertop, but had it been a normal blade, i.e. not one from mordor (is it called a morgal blade, i can't remember) he would have recovered much quicker and the effects would have almost completely worn off eventually, the stab he obtains from the blade unfortunately causes other physiological problems as you pointed out. Thinking about it now maybe Frodo does get knocked about a bit but not as severely as the others had i.e. Boromir dies. Frodo also gets stabbed by an Orc chief in Moria but thanks to his Mithril coat he's okey dokey, whereas Sam sustains a flesh wound.

My goodness, how these threads go off on tangents! I get puffed just going from thread to thread, as I don't want to miss anything. The trouble is, you never know if you'll find an interesting chat on Tom Bombadil on the Eragon thread. Or discover an interesting dissertation on cyber-dynamics on the Hobbit Songs thread! (I'm not saying you will either - that's why all this jumping and darting is so addictive - you just don't know what you might find! I'm going to check out the Smaug thread - in case there's something about American Politics on it....)

NB At no stage do I think of homosexuality when I read the Lord of the Rings. I guess I grew up in a time when there was no such thing as a homosexual. Gay people were just happy people when I was young. Times have changed, haven't they! :oops:

Indeed they have Odo :lol: . Nowadays, everything old seems "gay" to some. Wealthy men used wear frills and powdered wigs, or long robes (dresses) etc. In England today Judges still do. Men used to kiss each other (no tongue though :P ), and weep more readily, both in joy and sorrow.

And gradually the very meaning of the word gay has changed, I suppose because "gay" men were the only ones to continue openly indulging in Frivolity. Locker room antics by Jocks and so-called "manly" men sometimes seem just as "gay" to me, but Jocks will deny it with their fists :roll: , which they would often use against Tolkien aficionados :ugeek: in High School while castigating THEM as "gay".

If you're a jock, and you get drunk, and you have a bit of hanky panky with another jock - well, does this make you 'gay' or is it only the alcohol that's 'gay'?
