I'd probably say Visual effects nine years ago, but times have moved on in this short space of time haven't they (extremely good then). Makeup however was really, really good, Uruk Hai and Orcs look more than just men with fake skin and teeth, they were really convincing. Music was excellent, I remember the opening scenes of the Fellowship and being amazed by the quality of that.

I tend to judge special effects in light of the time period they were done in. A lot of Star Wars looks fake thirty years down the line (though not as much as one might expect), but it was an immensely impressive and groundbreaking film for when it was made. Likewise The Lord of the Rings is not [i:2tmfmaln]quite[/i:2tmfmaln] as impressive now but it was simply amazing for a film made around the turn of the millennium. I think the SFX have held up well though, and films with better SFX are only just starting to appear, and are a tiny minority of movies.

So in answer to your original question, Visual Effects. But Best Picture for ROTK is a close second.

I've been doing well, thanks. My exams finished a few weeks ago and I've been enjoying the summer. I hope yours went well.

Cheers for getting back, maybe that was a bit of a false statement Eldorian, I just assumed that they were out of date, when you look closer you realise they're great. I remember the cave troll in The Fellowship being pretty cool, I remember watching it at the cinema, he was really brilliant now I think back. Also, Rivendell obviously didn't exist in real life so the SFX and the camera work must have been a challenge when they only had models to use, although I suppose that wasn't considered a new technique then.
