It's not an official announcement, but I trust TORn more than all other sites, blogs, and anonymous sources put together. While I'd still like to see an official announcement, this is the next best thing.

[b:35zuc5qk]Update[/b:35zuc5qk]: Collider.com reports that Warner Bros. has confirmed this date. See the link in a below post.
Thread: TORn and Warner Bros: HOBBIT 1 SET FOR DEC. 2012

Agreed. I can't see them beginning the shoot much in the Summer or before given the rate that the MGM situation is progressing at. PJ made a comment a while ago that if they could start filming by June they could still be done in time for 2011, but given the latest news I think the shoot will start, at earliest, sometime this autumn.

Plus, the film would have had to have been greenlit a while ago for them to shoot this summer. And I expect a big announcement when it's actually officially greenlit. And that day will be a day for partying on Tolkien and LOTR forums worldwide
.

Yes, I trust TORn very much, too. This is good news, but it still means they probably won't start shooting next month.

With the Party Tree!!!! It'll be a night to remember!!
And i think everyone will know when the movie begins shooting. I remember there was a huge fuss when Jackson said he wasn't directing the Hobbit and GDT was. It was on the homepage of comcast.net.

2 years, 7 months, 23 days until december 21st (friday before christmas 2012).
Dont want to wait that long. Seems like for ever.

There are plenty of great, or at least interesting movies due to come out between now and then, and I'm sure there will be ones that nobody sees coming.
Plus we have the books and the existing LOTR films to keep us happy, so it's not like we'll have nothing to do.

My gardens looking pretty sad.

Uh-oh, let's hope it'll release before 12/21/12. That's the end of the world, remember. I want to see at least Hobbit 1 before I die, haha.

If it's released in the same slot as the LotR films (and King Kong and Avatar) it will be between two days and a week before the 21st.

Thank Goddess.
