I just saw the TFOTR once again. In the counsil of Elrond, Gimli is shown to be all heated up when it comes to Legolas handling the ring. It was more or less something as follows :



(From The Fellowship of the Ring movie. And btw, I know that Legolas didn't speak in the council in the book, but this incident is significant)

I don't remember the exact situation in the book. But, I don't remember any such incident happening in the counsil of Elrond. (Correct me if I'm wrong please.) I do however remember reading in The Hobbit that the relationship between the Dwarves and the Elves had deteriorated after the glory days in Moria (Durin's time.) I wonder why and how exactly. Can anybody please explain?

Well, I knew of the Dwarves' creation. Does that answer say everything?

There have been a few events in history that have created a rift between the Elves and Dwarves. The earliest one was possibly during the First Age when King Thingol asked the Dwarves to set a Silmaril in a necklace the Dwarves had earlier given him as a gift. After they had done so, they coverted the necklace so much, they killed Thingol and most of the elves of Menegroth in order to get their hands on it.

Later in the Second Age, there was great trade between the Elves of Eregion and the Dwarves of Khazad-dum (Moria). When Sauron attacked Eregion, however, and the surviving elves sought shelter in Moria, the Dwarves firmly bolted the West Gate and would not let them in.

And then in the Third Age, the Elves of Lorien were none too pleased when the Dwarves delved too deep and released a Balrog on their borders. This resulting action indirectly cost Lorien their King when Amroth went with his betrothed Nimrodel, after she refused to stay in Lorien near a rampaging Balrog.

Of a more personal note to Legolas, if it were not for the Orcs turning up at the Lonely Mountain, the Battle of Five Armies would no doubt have been a battle between Legolas's people and Gimli's.
