I have to do an author research paper for school, and I chose Tolkien for my topic. I need at least one good biography of Tolkien as a source for my paper. If any one has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks a lot.

Humphrey Carpenter's [url=http://www.amazon.com/J-R-R-Tolkien-Biography-Humphrey-Carpenter/dp/0618057021/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1270516202&sr=8-1:2lihbpaj]Tolkien: A Biography[/url:2lihbpaj] has been the gold standard for biographies for decades (it's also the official one, and Carpenter had met Tolkien on several occasions).

Tolkien Companion and Guide[/url:zkir7sca] by Scull & Hammond is far more comprehensive, but it's also very long and expensive, and probably a bit more than you're looking for.
