Inderjitsanghera: It may just be, that our Princess_L’thien is new to the internet; and as I read her post, it was only the movie that brought her to the book in the first place. Please cut her some slack.

Many of the Tolkien fans around here, have also decided to cut PJ a little slack, and are just happy that the parts of the books he has retained have been so well done. We feel PJ is just telling the same story through a different set of eyes and ears from that which Tolkien used when he wrote the book. That doesn't mean we don't/won't grouse about the changes when we find them, but doing so won't make much difference in the long run. And PJ's story is still good, even if it can never rise to the level of old JRRT's.

Ummm sam, I am confused. What do you mean that he cut Arwen out? PJ gave her a larger role at the expence of other characters. Is that a typo? Over all, I liked the movie too.

I wanted to say that while I enjoyed the movies, in fact, I had not read LOTR until after they came out because the book seemed so intimidating. But with the movies under my belt, the book isn't so BIG, if you follow me. (I have wanted to say that...just the way SAM would)

I'm finding out as I read along, and it IS irritating, that PJ took some wide artistic liberties with the story. I tend to agree that this is more than usually happens in a book to movie translation. I wish that Tom Bombadil had been in the first movie.

Still I think that the casting was well done and the film is good if you STOP comparing it to the book. The special effects are great. I love that morphing technology (thank you Michael Jackson!) as it made the whole scene with Bilbo and Frodo where his face freaks out....A REAL POPCORN SPILLER!!!

I often wish that feller whose name starts with an "R" and ends in a double "s" would view it the same way as you guys. Oh well.

True, and since he has taken over the SKWRL's job as resident skeptic/naysayer, he has freed up Plastic Squirrel's time allowing him to write more positive posts.

(Just joking around here folks, we need both Ross and Plastic's posts to challenge us to refute or at least comment on them.)

It's impossible NOT compare it to the book. Heh, every actor says 'we brought Tolkien's vision alive' or something so i guess it's not insane to compare it with the books. It's only when you compare the movies with the book, you realize that LOTR movie is just a movie claiming to be based on the LOTR books, in a way that they share the same title.

Well, I see your point, Vir; u've got some really good arguments! I won't try to defend people that say they brought Tolkien's vision alive when they didn't!
