Yes I do know. Watch you step now Ross, people might get upset. (Actually I wanted to say that myself, but couldn't find the words) Wink Smilie
haha geez I'm not homophobic, one of my best friends is gay, its just the thought of the hairy dwarves that i.....nah lol ok off the subject of gayness in the hobbit thanks for you comments though Tongue Smilie
Arwen and Aragorn are related?? They were very very (lightyears almost) distant family.

How about Galadriel and Celeborn ? They were cousins !
Galadriel is the grand-daughter of Olw’, whilst Celeborn is the grand-son of Elmo, Olw’'s brother.
I thought this is prohibited in a lot of countries today...

Had they both been grandchildren of Olwe, they would have been first cousins, but as they did not share the same grandparent they were only second cousins. I think that is permissable in most countries (it is in the UK anyway)

You can marry your cousin over here, I know they do in Heywood!

I know what you mean Ross. I think in my neck of the woods it's permissible to marry your sister.
I think I remember hearing somewhere that third cousins are essentially genetically unrelated.

The laws here probably vary from state to state... I'm fairly sure that second cousins are legally allowed to marry in New Jersey though I wouldn't swear to it.

But I bet in Tennesee there are a few kids referring to their parents as Uncle Dad and Aunt Mom Big Laugh Smilie
Come on guys. In most places first cousins are not allowed to legally marry as it tends to make the regressive genes dominant.

Next thing you'll be telling me is that, 'you are your own grandpa', just like in that song of my youth. Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

We rest our case! Big Laugh Smilie

No offence really meant Stony.
Now behave yourselves people. Moderator Smilie

It is not uncommon for royalty and nobility to marry second cousins. No one else but their own family is good enough, apparently. If you look at the British royal family, going back a few generations, it is surprising how many couples were already distantly related. I am not trying to deride the royals, it was just common practice a while back.

Elrond and Celebrian were also distantly related (via Galadriel's family), as were Elwing and Earendil.

However, Feanor's 'attraction' to Galadriel seems to have been considered innapropriate, and Maeglin's desire for Idril (first cousins) was considered incestuous. Even elves appear to have had resrictions on whom they could marry.
Stonehelm, my whole family is from Tennesee! Ask Rednell, she's seen my family tree Big Laugh Smilie

I was by no means suggesting that all people from Tennesee are inbred any more than Val or Ross were about their respective hometowns. Wink Smilie

Really now, Grondmaster? It's allowed to marry your cousin in Sweden.. Uh.. No, I just don't want to think about it. *Aire shrugs*
I knew you were kidding around Prog Wink Smilie

Thats why our royalty have so much disease and insanity. There are also mainly responsible for Haemophilia being spread across the Royal families of Europe. The royal family don't you just love, they destroy themselves without you having ot lift a finger. Phil insults everyone, charles talks cr*p and to tree's and the rest of them spend there tme evading tax, gambling and getting drunk!

oh man i didn't mean for this to become an insest forum lol. But i have another random thought that i remembered, Elrond isn't really half elven, since Earendil was half elven and Elwing was an Elf wouldn't that make Elrond 3/4 elven? Tongue Smilie
By that reconing that would make me a quater Welsh, But I was born in England brought up in England therefore I am English (although I prefer British much more communal).

And Ross's comment (posted above on 27/1/2003 at 12:36) about the royal family, if made by anyone but a Brit, would be fighting words.

Please Ross (and all you others out there) refrain from talking non-Tolkien related politics on this forum

Thank you

Sorry grondy, but 69% of britain fells the same!

Elrond is 5/8 elven. There is a more detailed discussion under characters, Earendill.

If you want Elrond's true blood breakdown read-on, if not ignore this post...

His mother, Elwing's line

Elwe (Elf) + Melian (Maiar) = Luthian (Half-elf/half-maiar)

Luthian + Beren (human) = Dior (Quarter-elf/quarter-maiar/half-human)

Dior + Nimroth (elf) = Elwing (Eighth-maiar/five-eighths elf/quarter-human)

Father, Earendil's line

Tuor (human) + Idril (elf) = Earendil (half-human/half-elf)

So Elrond is a mix of Elwing and Earendil which gives us the following....

Earendil (half-human/half-elf) + Elwing (Eighth-maiar/five-eighths elf/quarter-human) = Elrond

One sixteenth Maiar
nine sixteenths Elf
six sixteenths Human
Whole elf, he choose to be an elf!
Well, first/second grade cousins rn't allowed to marry where i live... anyway. I've checked.

I don't know about this just can't think of anything at all...
