This is just a vision of what she would have become had she succumbed to her desire to possess the one ring. You will see this happen again later on with Samwise. Due to the fact that Galadriel is good, and is so powerful, she passes the test. In the time of the Third Age, Galadriel is the most powerful elf in all of Middle Earth. In a way, she is sort of like a witch, just not an evil one. I think the term sorceress is probably more appropriate.

Or maybe like the wizard of oz, 'good witch of the north'...

Yes, both their names start with "G"; Glinda the Good and Galadriel the Great.

Galadriel is kool, but she is kind of frieky if you ask me.
she is wise and she knew she would have to contend with
the power of the one Ring sooner or later. think that takes quality.

she doesn't seem witch like to me she's just a very very powerful elf and the fact that she can contact her son through her mind will save her alot on phone bills (just kidding)

Witch? Oh she's a witch alright. Try Ice-Queen. Married to poor Celeborn for 3000 years and they have one kid!!?
Celeborn must have someone on the side.

I assume by this you are referring to Elrond, who is actually her son-in-law rather than her son. Galadriel in most accounts only had a daughter, Celebrian. In one variant, however, which Tolkien wrote, and is included in UT, Amroth was said to be Galadriel's son. This version, however, is thought to have been written after the writing of LotR and is thought to have been dismissed by the postAuthorID.she doesn't seem witch like to me she's just a very very powerful elf and the fact that she can contact her son through her mind will save her alot on phone bills
