New Line Acquires Distribution Rights; Paul Andersson to Direct; McKellan, Serkis to Return

(Los Angeles - April 1st 2004) - The Hobbit will begin principal photography in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2005, under the direction sci-fi/fantasy director Paul Andersson, it was jointly announced today by Robert Shay, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of New Line Cinema; Michael Lyne, President and Chief Operating Officer of New Line Cinema; Mark Ordesky, President of Fine Line Features; and Andersson, who is also a writer and producer of the production.

Following the unprecedented world-wide success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, capped by 11 Academy Award(R), acquiring the rights to distribute The Hobbit was of paramount importance to New Line, a division of Time-Warner Inc.

President and Chief Operating Officer of New Line Productions Mark Ordesky said: "What Lord of the Rings has proved is that [fantasy] can be synonymous with quality drama and storytelling."

The agreement between New Line Cinema, which held film rights to The Hobbit, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., which possessed the distribution rights, includes share of costs and profits, with New Line Cinema to retain creative control of the project. The distribution rights will be split between the domestic and international markets, with New Line taking the domestic distribution rights and MGM taking the international rights.

At the helm of the project is well-known science fiction and fantasy Director Paul Andersson, the young director whose portfolio includes smash successes such as Resident Evil, Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat. After earning critical and commercial acclaim for Event Horizon, Andersson relishes picking up after the success of The Lord of the Rings films and staking a claim in the Tolkien landscape, bringing to life the earliest of J.R.R. Tolkien's novels, The Hobbit.

With a little investigation you can see this is an April fools joke, for instance; "TOLKEIN ENTERPRISES UNDER LICENSE TO NW LINE PRODUCTIONS. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED." and if you are a complete geek like me, and you do a WHOIS domain lookup, you can see who was behind this little hoax, yes, none other than! - Nice work Corvar!
That's almost as good a hoax as the one I heard today: The US courts have ruled that telephone numbers can now be portable, so that when we move from one telephone company to another, we can keep our old phone numbers. Likewise, the US Postal Service has decided to let people keep their current ZIP Code even when they move to a different city or state. Orc Grinning Smilie
We have portable telephone numbers in Norway. Thankfully! But postal codes? Hehe! Maybe they have that here in Germany. The Deutsche Post manages to loose 7 out of 16 letters, so...
In Sweden you can move and still have yer old phonenumber....just tell them you want to do so and boom...there ya go
In New Zealand, too. I think. I don't have a phone. But if what you said about good old Germany, then Ich will nicht ever dort druben (is that right, dort druben?) and get a phone in Deutschland.
then Ich will nicht ever dort druben (is that right, dort druben?) and get a phone in Deutschland.
It looks good to me! Big Smile Smilie I'm not german and don't speak it fluently, but I understand very well what you wrote, and so would any german. "Dort dr’ben" means "over there" or "the other side(of the wall)" so it seem quite correct as far as I know. Smile Smilie

Here is an article that ran in my town's paper, The SUN, today. It is about the aftermath of an April Fools prank that wasn't very well taken due to the state of the world in which we find ourselves.

DJs suspended for water joke that didn't wash

In the end, it was Robin and Maynard who ended up all wet -- with dihydrogen monoxide.

The morning hosts of Seattle radio station 100.7 KQBZ-FM, known as The Buzz, were suspended for one day Friday after an April Fools' Day prank about Bremerton's water supply fell flat.

The radio station suspended Robin Erickson and John Maynard after they played a three-hour joke that said the Navy contaminated the city of Bremerton's water supply with dihydrogen monoxide -- the chemical name for water.

"It was irresponsible, and although it was an April Fools' Day joke, the last thing we wanted to do was cause any harm to any communities or public services," said KQBZ station manager Dave Richards. "It was not meant to harm anyone, and we apologize."

An apology repeatedly ran on the air Friday.

During the prank, Bremerton and Kitsap County officials asked the station to tell its listeners the skit was just a prank, but the hosts didn't do so until just before their show ended at 10 a.m.

Phyllis Mann, director of Kitsap County Emergency Management, said she and her staff spent about five hours Thursday dealing with the issue. Other city and county agencies also received calls from concerned residents.

Mann said she is asking her staff and any other city and county agencies affected by the prank to add up the time spent addressing the prank.

"I want everyone to gather up the amount of time and charges it cost them because I want to know how much this joke cost our community," she said.
Guess what my class did on April Fool's three days ago? We swapped classrooms with the class that's joined by a door to our classroom. They put up their books in front of their faces and our teacher even started to call the roll before she realised.

And in Tech, we all hid in the little changing room off the classroom. We turned off the lights and hid under the tables. It was pitch black, and it took ages for our teacher to find us.
Embarrassingly I must admit that I fell for The Hobbit April fool’s gag hook, line, and sinker (laughing at myself). I saw that on TORN that morning, and took it to be true. I had so much going on that week (that day especially) that I wasn’t even thinking about April fools day, my head was in a completely different space, and it didn’t even occur to me that it was April fools. Kudos’ to Tarrant in sniffing it out!

364 days out of the year, TORN’s information is generally pretty reliable, and based on everything I knew, it seemed plausible. Plus the way they were throwing around New Line’s name, I figured it had to be true, because no one would be dumb enough to go up against the wrath of New Line’s lawyers!

Anyway, I don’t get duped very often. In fact, it’s an extremely rare occurrence when it happens, but they got me. I should’ve looked before I leaped! Oh well, like the saying goes, ’if you can’t laugh at yourself, you can’t laugh at anyone!’

like that one dude who played Bilbo in the very beginning (I really dont know his name)

His name is Sir Ian Holm. I admire his acting. Saw him latest in a movie where he played Napolean Bonaparte. Forgot the movie's name but it was an amusing movie.
His was the Voice of Frodo in the "audio" version of Lord of the Rings - which is absolutely brilliant!

I recommend it to anyone as its a faithful and accurate adaptation of the work... and also it subjects your imagination to different modes of thinking than the book or the less vaunted movies.
