I have read the LotR, at least part of the Silmarillion, the Narnia Chronicles,the Children of the Star series, a couple of Terry Pratchets Discworld Novells, and a number of other Fantasy or Non-fantasy books,...
But a couple of weeks ago a copy of "Dead Poets Society" came into my hands and kept me awake all night.
Many of the above books I found fascinating, but I have never read a book so affecting and absorbing as DPS.
I have actually never seen the movie (I only heard there was one), but if it conveyed only half of the feeling, that is in the Book, it would be worth an oscar...
I really wondered, whether anybody else here has ever read that book...

Seriously though, my friends and I had tried to put together a Dead Poets Society once while I was in high school and then a second time when I was studying in Heidelberg. We had rules and everything. Very geeky. In high school, we even stood up on chairs and said, "Oh Captain, My Captain," to our teacher the last day of the school year. *gag* There is just so much feeling and passion in the movie that it really touches a part of one's soul...besides the fact that I am a sucker for the Romantics (the poets that is).

I have never read the book but i saw the movie in Lit class one day. the movie portrays the book's message really well. by the end of the movie, I was almost in tears. the themes in the movie relate amazingly to the ones in A Separate Peace. I would recommend this book to everyone.
I have also seen the movie... have you seen it Ardawan, and is it accurate to the book? I really enjoyed the movie- it was fun to see Robin Williams in a more serious role, because he still completely pulled it off. I have read A Separate Peace in English class... it was interesting, but I don't remember a lot of it, so I guess I'm not seeing the connection, Idrilcuthalien. I should probably try to find Dead Poets' Society (the book)... who's it by? I will probably like it, but it will have a very hard time beating Discworld in my opinion. But then, it says you've read Discworld too, Ardawan... was Dead Poets' Society better? really?
I really think the Dead Poets Society is better than anything I have ever read, but decide for yourself, Eva Lilith.

Yep, Heidelberg...it's a beautiful, beautiful place, and so much fun! It definitely is a student town. I'll actually be there again in about three weeks, travelling around Bavaria. I'm so excited! And just to keep this on topic...just above the Heidelberg Schloss there are three arches. These arches make a great place to hold "Dead Poets Society-esque" midnight poetry sessions overlooking the old town and Neckar River. 
A Separate Peace is about 2 boys at a summer session at Devon Boarding school. the 2 main characters, Gene and Finny, make a club cled the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. the initiation is to jump from a tree. Gene is very smart while Finny is very athletic. Gene becomes very jealous and ... you'll have 2 reasd the book 2 find out.
Had a lame and boring day at work today and started reading A seperate Peace...(Don't tell my boss) Actually until now it seems pretty boring, but I am only at the verry beginning yet...

Sorry.) Guys, what is The Dead Poets Society? I jus might read it if it's good enough. You see, I have a bunch of books on my list already. Like, a literal stack of the ones I have in my room, and about 6 others waiting for me in the library.
I always figured the "Dead Poets" were those poets from the 19th century who were no longer read by people out of academia. Poets like Keats, Yeats, Blale, Eliot, Shelley, Whitman, Longfellow, etc.
I tried to give a summary for those who have neither seen the movie, nor read the book:

I read DPS in class last year. It was a quite nice read, but I've certainly read better books before. But, I have to confess, when the boy died, I was really touched.
We also watched the movie after finishing reading the book, but I was somehow disappointed of it. I liked the book more than the movie.

As I read some of the posts above I've learned that some read it in class ,Is the book a part of schoolwork ? I remember that we read Lord of the Fliesin English class and The Garden Party . anyone else who did that during school?

I read both of those, among many, many others. Although I liked my American Literature class, I preferred my Honors' English class. We read Hamlet, the Tragedy of MacBeth, many others.
We read the Tragedy of MacBeth in my senior year high school English class, but I'm not sure if Old Will had finished writing Hamlet at that time.
