Ms. Halo Black: You are not the only one who's confused about this. Obviously the chess set was designed by the same Peter Jackson who directed the TT, rather than the one who directed the FotR. Hopefully he will get his act back together on the RotK, or he will loose the remainder of our good will.

Ahhhh, that explanes a lot...hopefully they won't cut Shelob out of the film aswell, otherwise we may have to organise a lynch-mob. Burning torches and pitchforks anyone?

Because, if you do, I would absolutley like to hear what you're backing up you're claims with. 
(Personally, I think that in the Two Towers movie, Frodo and Sam are boardering on fruity) None of the four hobbits were gay. 
...except Sam.

I don't know what to say about Sam though...I mean, the way he acted did kinda remind me of this gay fella I used to know...
So really what we're dealing with here is a sorta-gayish hobbit and a cross dressing wizard (Is that a dress your wearing Saruman? It certanly looks like one!). Woo! Cool!

Sam was definitely not gay! For all of us that have read the appendices in ROTK (and Plastic ought to appreciate this quote), we know that Sam ends up getting "a whole lot of Rosie"!
pls..... forgive me...but ’who is shelob?, i do not remember reading anything about any character with that name.....
by the way... i do not think sam was gay at all...,after all he got married(happily married , i think)but as from the rest.......well, i never saw them turning heads at a girl, if you know what i mean......

Shelob is the giant spider that Sam and Frodo meet in the last chapters of the Two Towers, and that Peter Jackson unfortunately did not include in the Two Towers movie.
And Sam was not gay, Plastic, I don't see why you hate him so much. Merry and Pippin are probably not either, but i can't say anything definite about Frodo...
But of course Tolkien did not mean for any of the readers to even doubt that they are straight.
Sam was in denial. That is why he alone felt the need to go get a whole lot of Rosie (39 42 56 you could say she's got it all!) as the others felt secure enough in their sexuality to be happy free single Hobbits. *giggles into his coffee and awaits another backlash*
The other hobbits got married and lived happily ever after with lots of children. Frodo was too broken down by the wound from the Nazgul blade and the Ring. He had often moodswings and depression. He wouldn't make a good husband for any cheerful, happy hobbit-lass even if he did fall in love. (not for any cheerful, happy hobbit-lad either.)
And about the LOTR chess. The queen can move in any direction, it's the most powerful piece to take out (except for the king of course.) Shelob was not contolled by anyone, she worked for no-one, she didn't take sides with anyone. She had nothing to do with the rest of the world, she just killed what ever came into her cave and ate it. Why would she be in the chess set fighting to protect Sauron? And she hardly ever left her cave, so her running around on the chessborad would be wrong. The Black Riders were the most powerfull and scary creatures of Saurons army, I think they are worthy the queens place on the chessboard.

I wonder why they put a black rider as a queen, because the black riders were once KINGS not queens. So also, i think that insted of Gandalf as a king, Celeborn should be the king.
For the White King I'd vote for Estel aka: Thorongil, Strider, Aragorn, and Elessar.

I take this comment back, maybe PJ isn't that bad after all. I read an article the other day saying that the orgional company PJ took the LotR idea to wanted to stuff the entire trilogy into one film. And you know what that would mean...The Rock as Gandalf, Russle Crowe as Frodo, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Legoles, Wesley Snipes as Elrond, Robert Englund as Bilbo and Christopher Lambert as Saruman (but only cause he looks spiffy with long white hair, think Mortal Kombat movie).
Compleat nightmare!!!
Oh, and lets not forget my highschool science teacher starring as Sauron (you'd be amased how alike they are)

i share amaries point of view....,about shelob being the queen....,originally the figure of the queen in the chess game was not just merely a woman,but it was also the representation of all the power arround her, as a diplomat...,and therefore the sorcerer-king-of angmar would be the best fitting there as the queen....,but that does not mean that he has to be a female....it means that it is sauron’s right hand...,the power where he laid all the responsability of protecting the kingdom....,as it was supposed to be with queens in the middle age....they are just representative figures of power in a game where politics are the main game....strategy where most of the times the queen was not a woman,but the representation of another "tool" that the king could use....,like in order to have .....’alligances?(is it correct????)....or to work as a political messenger, like ministers are nowadays....
i was thinking on what you said Halo-Black.....and it seems to be you have got a point....but....do you not think that combats as they are in mortal Kombat would be great for the fight betwen morgoth and fingolfin..... .....well, it is just a simple idea....

You know, sometimes the queen in Chess isn't called a queen, but a Hetman.
Which still makes Wormtongue a pathetic choice.
Is the only reason they didn't have Sauron as King and Saruman as Hetman (or Queen, if you must:P) the ridiculous effect rolling an eyeball on the board would have?
I always had a fancy to make my own LOTR chess set...but I couldn't make up my mind who to cast for the pieces. What do you think the perfect combination would be?

No big deal there : Pj already used this in Fotr movie. In the opening scene, Sauron looks almost exactly like Shao Khan (including the hammer). And he was also as fat.

Dye Saruman's hair and beard black = Shang Tsung
Stick an extra pair of arms of Lurtz = Goro
Shave Gandalf and dress him in an old sack = Rayden, God of thunder and...er...clothes that look like sacks.
