Thread: Writing Competition FAQ

Bottom of Page    Message Board > Writers Guild > Writing Competition FAQ
I am opening this thread in order for anyone to raise questions about or comment on the Writing Competition we are launching. If you have any queries or comments, please feel free to post them below.

Good luck to all prospective entrants. Judging by the numerous RPG/Storyboards we have around the site, we have many talented writers here. Please don't be shy. Put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboards) and send us your story.
I'd like to ask a question. Can the story be a prose version of a poem by tolkien?

Hi Loni.

Provided the prose version is sufficiently different from the original (not just a few words changed around), I see no reason why an adaptation cannot be submissible. In a way, most Fan Fiction is just an adaptation of something which JRR wrote, so why not adapt one of his poems into a short story.

Good luck with it.
Alright, I changed my mind. No poem adaptation. (Val sighs). But can I do an adaptation of an already written Tolkien story? But not top quality LOTR stuff, you know, unfinished stuff, like the Silmarillion. I know it'll have to be different. But can I? I've sort of already started. And it's from a completely different point of view than it was originally written. Please?

Yes, that's fine too Loni. Fan Fiction is all about writing your own representations of known stories. For instance I wrote a story about Balin's return to Moria. This was an event which Tolkien had mentioned briefly, but only partially. It was ripe for a fan fiction writer to fill in the gaps using his own imagination. Gnampie also wrote a couple of stories about the battle of Helm's Deep. This is a battle which Tolkien described in a lot of detail, but what Gnampie did was write her story from the perspective of one of the soldiers. In this way her story was taken from an entirely different perspective.

I think this is something like what you are hoping to do with your story. Basically, anything goes as long as it is written in prose and it isn't a blatent plagiarism of something someone else has already written.
I have a question. Since I was directed to this board & challenge by a non-member of Planet Tolkien... Can non PT members enter the competition as well? I already signed up and I like it here, but I was wondering about that..
Hi Rhapsody.

No, you do not necessarily have to be a member here to enter the competition. We do have a great community here, however, and a lot of material likely to be of interest to Tolkien Fan Fiction writers. Nice to see you have joined us. I hope you enjoy yourself here.
Val, I send in my story yesterday to the mentioned adress. Do we get a confirmation that it has arrived?
Yes you do. As you now know. Wink Smilie
