I played rhythm toothbrush in the band at Bilbo's party, honest, do I count? Wink Smilie
lol - really?
oh shoot, they found me out... Wink Smilie
It would be really cool, apart from the fact that a lot of members here are more interested in the books than the movies, and therefor some less... well... less appreciating things have been written about the movie and sometimes even the actors. Let's just hope they don't see those parts. rrrEr... just to make sure though: ORLANDO!! I LOVE YOU!
No matter WHAT I've said before, I still love you! In Love Smilie I Love You Smilie Making Out Smilie
Too late.

I'd be surprised if someone of those movies would be member here, coz those movies have nothin in common with the books, safe for the title they stole. but if they'd come in here, they'd be hunted down, captured and exiled to the land of nod. that's it
Well, if PJ came here and came back the following day, he probably wouldn't be subjected to reading the subsequent harangues from Ross, Virumor, Alu’, and company, because their in your face posts would have been so inflammatory that we moderators would probably have had to delete them. Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

Even if I disagree with many of the aspects of the movies, there are many more I like, and their creators would be welcome here and should be subject to the same respect as the rest of our membership. That said, we could invite some of them to visit the Gurgle thread where we could practice pie throwing and invite Rhodry to bring the ammunition. Cow Sleeping Smilie Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

is this true Liv, Cate, or Miranda? Who are you PLEASE tell me!!! if your not really part of the cast feel free to not answer this question. but if you are what is elijah wood really like!!! i love him!!!! ask him to please him to attend this site!!!rr*evithian faints because of loss of air* [only momentarly Wink Smilie ]
I was just kidding! You really are in love with Elija Wood...
Peter Jackson was a member here once, well, alright it turned out to be Balrog, but it was pretty funny for a while...
It would have been nice to have PJ here so he could answer all our questions about the changes he made, maybe if we understood why he did it, it would be easier to accept?

None of the above mentioned I-hate-PJ club members post would last long when seen by the council, but the fiery words might etch into the screen if left on to long. Wink Smilie
I am PJ honest, listen. I'm stuck up my own harmonica, I haven't read the books and I have shrimp for brains.

really, ross, for reals? What is elijah wood like? i really like him!!! but dont fake if your lying.
I think it would be very neat if any of the cast were members here. They might have been, they had to learn Elvish and research the part, and what better way than to join a Tolkien fan site?
Maybe someone should email PJ and send him a link to the site Wink Smilie

That's a coincidence, I want to find PJ home address and send him a Exploding Head Smilie!

This is why emailing PJ and send him a link to the site is not a good idea at all! PT would get in a lot of troubble!
Naw, we can just blame it all on Ross. Wink Smilie
I belive in freedom of speech. If PJ can get away with butchering the book to such an extent that it only shares the same title and character names, I can verbaly abuse him until I'm blue in the face. I have large lungs Wink Smilie
I think it won't last very long before PJ's movie commercial agents will become member here and tell us that "JRRT didn't follow the movies, instead of PJ didn't follow the books". Thinking of it, i think they're already member here.
In actual fact, virumor, the script for the film was written long before JRR put pen to paper. I'm disappointed to say he did not follow the movies very well at all. This is most annoying because many people who read the books first come away with totally the wrong impression of how it should have been. And it's a sacrilage how Tolkien blatently invented characters and scenes that were never there.... Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Downs for instance. What was he trying to pull with that one. And how he robbed poor Arwen of all her scenes. He tried to totally play her out in his interpretation, making her nothing more than Aragorn's bit on the side. Who is this Glorfindel character anyway? I'm not happy how he tried to soften up both Elrond and Faramir either. Everyone knows they were meant to be stern, mean *******s, not the Mummy's boys he portraid them as.

Well I could go on and on, but I won't. I'll just say how bitterly disappointed I am that whole generations were brought up not realising that Legolas was elven skateboarding champ, Gimli was a star comedian and Aragorn loved his horse.
ROFLMAOUIPMP!!!

That's beautiful Val, the stuff dreams are made of. Angel Smilie Speaking of which, did you confiscate some one's stash and decide to try it out. j/k Elf With a Big Grin Smilie
Roflmao Val!!

Oh boy. I better start reading The Hobbit to my kids before they even know what I'm reading about.
At least now we now know one of PJ's commercial agents infiltrated in PT : Valedhelgwath :P
What you mean I've been wrong all along. Wink Smilie
Ignoring the last few post because i didn't read them.....no wait:

Aire, I JUST found out what that meant, like, four days ago, I swear. I was in the dark for the longest time!!!!
Neways, If people from the movie were in here...they wouldn't unless they actually read the books or were like Christopher Lee, Peter Jackson, Ian McKellen, Ian Holmes or some of the crew members.

Seriously Delidia? You didn't know that abbreviation? Tongue Smilie Well, if you feel like it there's a thread here somewhere in the forums that's named "chatters" or something like that that contains bussloads of abbreviations. Just a tip. Smoke Smilie
Theres this other one, thats like
rotfflmwmfao or something. I really was rotflmao-ing!!

Delidia: If you didn't read Valedhelgwath's last post which was a beautiful tongue in cheek piece of satire of all the nay-sayers on here, anyway, if you didn't read it you missed a good laugh. Elf With a Big Grin Smilie

And don't worry about not knowing what some group of letters stand for, just ask. That's how I learned what ROFL meant, three years ago when I first came to Planet-Tolkien.com, which was my first experience with forums, chat, or being online even. Happy Elf Smilie
I think that some ppl on this site are a little too hard on the cast and crew of the movies. Even though some think they're practically sacrilegious to Tolkien's work, it's hard for me to be like that. Seeing the Appendices discs and watching what all the cast/crew had to go through, i.e. all the time and effort, makes me just ignore anything pretty negative about them. Not that I thought the movies were perfect! But I really enjoyed them as movies, not just as 'representations of Tolkien's work.' They really are great movies. Wink Smilie

/me hugs Arcormacolind’va simply because it's so good to read something nice and polite after (against my better knowledge) trying to discuss with Ross and Aul’. I love the movies despite their mistakes/changes/violations of Tolkiens works, sat for hours looking at the drawings for Bag-End one day, full layout of all the rooms inside while we just see about four rooms in the movie. A lot of love is put into these movies, most of the work is not shown on the screen. So view the appendixes, they're pratically as important at Tolkiens appendixes.
Concerning most of ur views on the cast & crew of the LOTR movie (especially PJ), I wold like u to step into his shoes and try to make a movie about LOTR which does not bore the ppl (especially those new to Tolkien genre) and also one that is 3hr. long. I would also like u to consider the hard work and effort of the ppl involved in the movie. How else can one get such dazzling special FX?

If I ever meet a cast or crew of LOTR, then I will thank him for his efforts and congratulate him for doing a good job of bringing Tolkien's work on the big screen no matter how "unfaithful" it is.
Well said lord_aragorn86. Welcome to our forum. I hape to see more of your posts. Happy Elf Smilie
If you say PJ did a good job in bringing Tolkien's work to the big screen, then you're wrong. PJ failed completely in translating the characters and the story from the books to the movies.
he completely changed the characters as Tolkien described them, and completely changed important parts of the plot, where he could have followed the books.

but of course the movie contains good special effects, good action, lots of orc heads rolling over the ground, a bit of kissing, a lot of humour which is supposed to break the so-called 'tension', but the story of the books isn't there which for me is still the most important factor of a movie.

and it's true they put a lot of their time and work in the movies, sometimes some figurants even removed some of viggo mortensen's teeth ( i wish i had been there ) and sometimes liv tyler stumbled off her horse when she learned horse back driving ( i wish i had been there, i still have to wait for the LoTR bloopers-DVD). Well, so what??
quality, not quantity : someone can work 100 years on something and still fail miserably.

The magnificent works of JRRT were unfilmable 40 years ago, 20 years ago, today and probably forever. (maybe until someone invents holo deck programs like in star trek so every nitpicker can make his or her own adaptation).

I think that is maybe the top and bottom of it, Virumor. Everyone has different likes, dislikes, expectations and tolerances. Some people would rather see a film that follows the book very closely, while others would prefer a film that cuts the slower parts. Film and books are two different media, and while there is a cross-over, they don't always translate very well.

Personally, I'm like you in that I would have preferred to see a film that followed the book more closely, but we've got what we've got, and I still think it's a great film. Had I never read the books, I think I would have thought the film fantastic. The changes do grate, but I cannot deny the quality and detail (okay not to the story, maybe Smile Smilie ) that went into it. I cannot think of many other films that have gone to such lengths to make everything seem so real. It's a shame certain plots have been unnecessarily twisted.

Changing plots is not unusual though. Many books that have been adapted to film find their story hacked and slashed about. Take Jaws, for instance. It's one of the greatest films ever made, but quite different to the book in places (even to the extent of the death of the main character in the book, while he swims quite happily into the sunset in the film).
U can say all u like, bt I am still going 2 say that the movies were gr8. I agree with u totally Val, but I think that the Acedmy judges agree with Virumor. That may explain y LOTR movies haven't even got one Oscar in the mainstream categories.
I know the moives arent the books, but they ARE good. Although i hate what happened to faramir, and other things, i still enjoy them. i mean some people are just so stuck up about the moives that it sickens me. cut PJ some slack!! i do agree that the books are better and always will be, but i am content as to just see what these people have created for our sheer enjoyment. i dont ask for more than that but i can see that others would rather whine about it than be thankful.
Whats there to be thankful for? Yeah, ok the movies are alright as movies -- well actually they're cr*p as movies to be honest! What the hell did PJ think he was doing?
Well said it's the effects that carry the poor excuses for movies. Come on PJ show your face in Manchester I dare you. First i'm going to make you read the complete works of Tolkien then I'm going to feed you to Sprout!
I have come up with this conclusion about the movies, books, and the people who read them[even the jerks]-

everyone interpets them differently. what for one person was the most meaningful line, might be something another doesnt even recall about the story. there was no possible way pj could have made everyone happy, this theard is proof of that. he simply tried his best and whats done is done. some of you will say he could have done better, and partly i agree, but i hate to tell you that all of your complaining will do
NOTHING it will ony make you more upset the longer you dwell in it. i think he did a fine job and captured what most of us wanted to see, and it is just too bad for you that you cant enjoy it. i honestly pitty you.
Agreed, Evithian! But I will say that although I believe he did a pretty descent job of capturing the idea of LOTR, I think PJ left out some of the heart behind it. I will say that he lended to the good/evil struggle greatly by adding the elves into Helm's Deep-I think Prof. Tolkien might even have approved of that, seeing how it lends itself well to the idea that elves are steadfast and true, though in Tolkien's own words, they were mostly unconcerned with the affairs or wars of men.

As someone here said, the movies were only one group of people's interpretation of LOTR, and each other person would have their own variation. We must also try not to be so limiting of our enjoyment of things because of their lack of authorial purity- as in life itself, and certainly humans which create works of this nature, nothing is perfect and everything has to naturally evolve, or mutate.

In the case of the movies, I believe that the interest of the moviemaker is to present an engaging and entertaining movie, if not completely by-the-book literally. Also the idea was to keep it action-packed enough to interest people who may not have ever read the books(imagine how deprived they are!), therefore making Tolkien's work more accessible to the general public and sparking an appreciation for his creation in them. So more power to those who want to include others beside our fanatical selves in the amazing world of Tolkien's soul via movies or whatever. Teacher Smilie

Can anyone say rant? Sorry...Now that's said-I desperately hope any of the cast members visit here so they can see the dedication of the fans that love what they were a small part of...even if all of us don't agree with their portrayals!

Moderator Smilie Ainulindhe , please excuse my intrusion in your post. I merely broke up the text to make your post a little easier for other members to read. It’s a really great post, and I like what you had to say! I hope some others take the time to read it, and sincerely think about what you said. ElfstoneModerator Smilie

couldn't say it better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd shake PJ's hand and say "Thank you, we needed that. Cool Elf Smilie

I'd also say, "Ignore those naysayers behind the curtain: they think they know what they're missing, so we'll just let them go ahead and give it a miss. Meanwhile the rest of us will sit back with our popcorn and sodas and enjoy viewing your picture show."
And us nay sayers will be laughing, in the safe knowledge we haven't just wasted three hours of our life watching his tripe.
Ahhh! But you naysayers would have missed the clean-sweep the 3 hours of our lives made at the Oscars! Now THAT was sweetness in action. As for 3 hours, my friends and I drove 6 hrs. to go view the trilogy on the biggest screen in the state, (first two were EE) then drove the six hours back, after the trilogy ended at 11:30 pm. We stayed up all night, needless to say... And I wouldn't say I wasted one second of that 40 hour trip!
The oscars. The biggest show of self congratulating idiots of them all. These award ceromonies aret here to promote movies that are currently on release on either the big screen or various video formats to increase sales in a cynical attempt to treat the general public in contempt. Hmmm might be working in some cases Wink Smilie
I agree with most of you guys that PJ did a good job on the movies, considering the length of movie, it could have been 6 hours long, leave nothing out, and all you naysayers would still be naysaying, because that is what you like to. I personally think the movies are great.

As PJ himself said, in the special features on the ROTK DVD, he didn't have, big, unbelievably famous actors to work with, so, he just made the best, and, as I also found out in those same special features, he had originally scripted the LOTR trilogy for just two movies, not three, so maybe they left what they thought not as important, and in the process of stretching it back out, as much as he dared, accidently left out, or just didn't want to put, those parts back in.

But, as everyone here is entitled to an opinion, I am sorry if I insulted anyone.
