Hello Everyone,
Thought it polite to come and introduce myself here. I have been reading some of the posts here on the website for a little while now and thought you all sounded nice! So I have plucked up the courage to join in! I have not read lots of Tolkien's work yet - only The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - but I am about to read The Sillmarilion and I am really looking foward to doing so.
Thread: Hello
Yay! First reply dance!!! Welcome to Planet Tolkien, Ardhoniel!!! We really aren't that scary, are we?
Join in! I, as well as everyone else, would love to hear what you are seeing as a first time reader of the silmarillion, and we are here to answer any questions you may come up with!! Welcome again to Planet Tolkien!

I will ask if I get stuck on The Silmarillion - I have had a copy for years, and it has always seemed to be a little bit tricky to get into, but I am going to give it a go! You guys are not that scary - honest! I am looking foward to chatting about Tolkien!
Greetings and welcome Ardhoniel, we arent really scary, except for Vee, dont ask!! it is quite nice here, i have to admit that but dont be scared to join new threads everyone is as welcoming as the next person, so everyone should be as nice as our Laurel, or 'Bird Lady' as she is commonly known (ive heard) oh yes, read the silmarillion its a very good read, but i wouldnt go straight for the 10 books in series by C. Tolkien, yet, read some originals!! see you around and welcome, and vote for us at Tolkien top 100!! the little brown box near the top, see ya around
Howdy, Ardhoniel, welcome; enjoy your stay. We're Mostly Harmless, as you've seen, and there's always room for one more (especially if they vote at the link. ;-p) You're in for a real treat with the Silmarillion; many of us like it better than the Trilogy. So much more epic; for the umpteenth time I say Feanors solution to Sauron would have been to personally and single handedly kick his rear up one side of Middle-earth and down the other. He'd have done it, too, unless Fingolfin beat him to it.
Sadly, it was Tolkiens great life work, which means while the story is finished (thanks to the doughty efforts of Guy Gavriel Kay and Christopher Tolkien) we don't have it in the kind of detail we've all come to know and love in the Trilogy. The closest thing to that is the tomey History of Middle-earth, but I think I can establish an overwhelming consensus those are best saved until you're QUITE familiar with the Silmarillion and Trilogy. I still occassionally have to catch myself: "no, that was in The Book of Lost Tales Part II; it was changed to x in the Silmarillion, and the Silmarillion, not HoME, is canon. " Though I personally feel anything in HoME not expressly contradicted by the Silmarillion (or elsewhere in HoME) can be accepted as canon; who's to say otherwise?
All of that by way of saying, "Hi, enjoy, and see ya 'round the board." ;-p

Welcome to Planet-Tolkien Ardhoniel.
When you are ready to ask a question concerning The Silmarillion I suggest you ask it or them in one of the existing threads under The Silmarillion and only if you can't find a topic that fits your question, to then start a new thread. If your question is more oriented to a specific character then check out the threads under Characters and add it there under an existing thread if possible.
Anyway, have fun. Share and enjoy!

Howdy and welcome, Darkstar; enjoy your stay. Sadly, I can't tell you one way or t'other about Roverandom. I'd recommend posting a query HERE:
http://www.planet-tolkien.com/board/cat/16/0/
Or, if that link doesn't work (as it doesn't want to for me unless I click from within PT) go to "Forums>Books>Other." See ya 'round the boards. Myself, I'm just hoping Jim got his book returned....

Hi Darkstar, welcome to our happy family. Roverandom is a kid's story about a pupdog named Rover, who not having heard the saying about never meddling in the affairs of wizards, did so. The consequence of this was his great adventure.
