I believe the cast to be one, if not the most, important thing for TH, even above the LOtRized vs Fairy Tale delivery...
In LOtR , PJ got most of the actors to materialize the idea I had of them, I've been reading the book for 30 years now.

Jason Isaacs as Thranduil would be great...and Olivia Wilde (Thirteen on Dr House) looks "elvish" in my mind, for that role of the elven female...

Celeborn was ... underwhelming, to say the least. I thought Otto and Wenham did alright though considering the material they were given to work with.

I agree, especially for Sean Bean. I would list Ian McKellen as well except that I only really liked him in FotR; after he became the White I wasn't as fond of the actor or the character.

There is a fine Siamese Cat in that too. One of my favorite all time books, but little known. Quietly hilarious too! Captain Midnite (it's more Bushranger-like and fierce to spell [i:3grmgimf]midnight[/i:3grmgimf] incorrectly!) is only the titular leader of the Gang. The Siamese Cat is the Real brains behind the outfit - which includes a Delightfully Dopey Cow, a Sheepdog that never stops grinning, a bad tempered Major Mitchell Cockatoo, and a Great Red (Vermillion?) Noble Horse. Only the Cat, however,is smart enough to talk. As stories for children go, Midnite is probably second only in my opinion to The Hobbit - though quite different. Should be better known! Good point, Elrond. Have you suggestions for actors for some (or all) of the others?
It's a fairly widely-held assumption that only four or five dwarves will actually have developed characters, and that the rest will mainly just be in the background. Given that otherwise they'd have to introduce no fewer than 15 characters in the first few minutes of the film, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. I hope that the background dwarves get [i:n5cybh4x]some[/i:n5cybh4x] decent attention, though.
I think each dwarve will have his moment. And a scene or two showing insights into their every hope and dream, and some repressed memory stuff, would be a treat, I think. We would get at least three movies that way, and take it away from all that childish [i:1ii963se]book[/i:1ii963se] stuff. Contrastingly, they could, even, I suppose stick to the book. Each dwarve, I think, has a at least one cameo in the book, even if it's just a fist fight over damp tinder-boxes.
