I think Martin Freeman would be a really great Bilbo. I'm not sure how great of an actor he is in terms of range, having only seen him in The Office but he definitely looks the part. I hope he gets it.
How about:
Gandalf Ian McKellen
Gollum Andy Serkis
Bilbo Robson Green
Gloin Griff Rhys Jones
Balin Patrick Stewart
Bombur Nick Frost
more dwarves: Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg, Robert De Niro
Thranduil Hugh Jackman/Nathanial Parker
Bard Rufus Sewell (he should have been Aragorn!)
Beorn Vincent D'Onofrio

and all other characters can also be played by Vincent D'Onofrio!! <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
Rufus Sewell would be a great choice for The Hobbit movies. Im not 100% sure about Bard but I definitely see him in Middle Earth. He's too ugly to be Thranduil but he would be good at playing an elf. Hugo Weaving is pretty ugly too so maybe thats a possibility.
Well I know I don't visit here often, but I love all the updates I do get and since the ball has started rolling I figured I would add My selections to the cast members
I have to agree with many of the selections of others but mine are a lil diffrent
so here's my List

Ian McKellen- Gandalf
Andy Serkis- Gollum
Peter MacNicol - Bilbo Baggins
Brian Blessed-Thorin Oakenshield
Hugo Weaving- Elrond
Richard E Grant- Thranduil
Ron Perlman or Brian Thompson- Beorn
Lee Arenberg- Balin
Timothy Spall-Dwalin
Brendan Gleeson- Bombur
Hugh Jackman- Bard the Bowman, granted it seems a small part for someone like Hugh
(but none the less a vital part) it would work
and
Michael Wincott, Ron Perlman or Christoper Lee - Smaug (voice)
Guess it depends on weather they want to have smaug sound more Jaded or just evil and spiteful
and personlly I Always thouggt of Smaug as being more Jaded and self-absorbed then Directly Evil and malicious but once again that's just my opinion

I also noticed that some had mentioned Rufus Sewell, he is a wonderful actor IMO and yeah I think it would be great if he had some part In the casting as well
I could see Him as Bard, maybe Even Beorn.
there are so many great actors out there who often go unnoticed and he is one of them and
Honestly IMO as long as you have
a cast of actors that clicks perfectly they don't have to be Hollywood superstars,
though I'm sure from a marketing perspective it is very important.
I just wish they would choose all the parts soon
it's driving my crazy all the waiting LOL

I agree with you about Martin Freeman, Fingolfin. He just looks right! If you get the chance to check out 'Love Actually' and 'Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy', Martin's in both. He plays the main character in Hitch Hiker's Guide.
Here is someone I think would be ideal for the part of Bard. I’m not sure if he’s been mentioned in this thread before: [b:38tkpm76]Richard Armitage[/b:38tkpm76]. He's the British actor who played Sir Guy of Gisborne in the BBC's recent incarnation of Robin Hood. His other notable roles are John Thornton in the TV adaptation of North & South. (From the book by Elizabeth Gaskell, not the American TV series about the Civil War.) Lately, he's played MI5 agent, Lucas North, in the spy series, Spooks.
He's got a substantial fan base around the world, but he's not a Hollywood superstar, and I gather that this is the type of actor The Hobbit producers prefer to cast - just as they did in LOTR?
I did a painting of my version of Bard, using Richard Armitage as my 'model'. I hope that it's okay to put a link in here to the painting, so that you can perhaps see why I feel that he'd be great as Bard.
(I think he'd be excellent as Thranduil too. I hope to show you that one soon...Actually, you can see a tiny version of Richard as Thranduil in my avatar.) <img src='/images/smileys/smile.gif' border='0' alt='Smile Smilie' />

Wow, beautiful artwork FrodosMum :o  . You're right, Armitage would make a good Bard.

I hope you post more of your pictures and paintings too. We have a Fantasy/Sci Fi art thread awaiting more posts. Though of course you are welcome to link to any pictures that are topical to your posts in any other thread too.

Why Are they even thinking of casting Galadriel. From what i remember she was never in the book The hobbit. Why put her in a movie based off the book? Seems stupid as hell to me. Plus Cate Blanchett is horrid
Galadriel was an important member of the white council and since they are including that story line into these movies she obviously will have a big role. With all the talks of the need for a female lead I feel that Galadriel is such a great character that she can definitely carry that mantle. And for those who think that there needs to be a romantic story, delve into her relationship with Celeborn. Galadriel is one of my favorite characters from Middle Earth and I would love to see more of her in these movies. And I like Cate Blanchett and I think she did a good job in LotR
OMG I'll post the complete list later because ATM I'm quite busy, but I just got a really good idea!!! Ewan McGregor as Bard the Bowman!!
Just took a look at martin freeman. Yes: a perfect bilbo.
Im not convinced Martin freeman can act- did you see his portrayal of Arthur Dent? It was just the bloke from the office in a dressing gown. Unless they plan on Bilbo's role in the film being reduced to meaningful glances at the camera I dont fancy him for the role.
I'm not willing to really defend my position on this one, but what would people think of Mark Williams?

[img:l0mpabao]http://www.virginmedia.com/images/potter6prem-markwilliams-300x400.jpg[/img:l0mpabao]

I realize he's probably entirely too old, but he's certainly younger than Ian Holmes. He's fifty-one, actually. If they dyed his hair, I feel he'd be just the part. I also don't really know about his acting, though. The only thing I've seen him in is Harry Potter, and he doesn't really get enough screen time for me to tell if he's any good.
Not a bad thought at all - looks the type. (You're right about the hair).
Mr Weasley as Bilbo? I like it <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> .

hello, new to site, but here are some suggestions i had as far as casting.
i like Hugh Laurie as Thorin ,Jack Black as either Bilbo,or maybe Bombur,Jeremy Irons as voice of Smaug and I know it sounds crazy bur i would love to see Rupert from Survivor reality show as Beorn
Welcome Sauron! (I can't believe I just said that - my mother always knew I'd come to a bad end.)

When you mentioned Jack Black as Bilbo I shuddered at first, not least because of the hilarious "easter egg" in the LoTR videos where he played an elf who got drunk and did an unfortunate thing with the ring at a piercing parlor. If you haven't seen this it's worth hunting up, though it's definitely NOT everyone's cup of tea.

But thinking it over, he's actually a brilliant actor who doesn't have to play irreverent parts, and has a talent for inducing audience empathy. He'd be very good at playing an outwardly staid squire who has something not quite respectable and adventurous bubbling up inside him. It could be an inspired choice.
thank you halfwise, ive just always thought Jack Black was a good choice for a hobbit role and this will probably blow your mind, but me and my wife were discussing the roles yesterday and she said she would like to see Jim Carey--as Bard the bowman!!! at first i laughed wholeheartedly but then got to thinking about how well he did in The Number 23 and had to think he might actually do well.I also know with Jackson producing we will probably all be supprised by some of the casting choices as he likes to take chances with actors.
Okay, that's going too far. Didn't see the number 23, but still....
But then, I didn't like Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn at first, always wanted Daniel Day Lewis (who was actually PJ's first choice, to his credit. DDL turned him down). But Viggo's dedication eventually won me over.
Jim Carrey is one of my all time favourite American comic actors, and he is more than capable of subtle, nuanced roles as anyone who has seen The Truman Show, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind knows. But if he were to be in The Hobbit, his skills would be put to better use as The Goblin King, or some such over-the-top personality. Come to think of it, he would've been a good Gollum (but I love Andy Serkis).

[b:3m9bwsd1]GB[/b:3m9bwsd1]
I know Jim Carrey primarily from the Ace Ventura movies that I love. :P I could see him as minor and (semi-)comic character. The "tremendous" Great Goblin could work; better he be more over the top than Bolg or whatever representative/manifestation of Sauron is shown at Dol Guldur. Still, I wouldn't want it to be too 'haha' funny; I don't think that would work for a villain.

Thinking on it ... what if ... Jim Carrey was the Elven-king? :P
Carrey as Thranduil, intriguing.

[b:re5b22j0]GB[/b:re5b22j0]
I could see Carrey delivering lines about "my magic gates" and stuff like that.
Hi, Im new on this forum and I don't really know how it works. At the moment I live in Wellington but I come from France and I love all about Tolkien. I wonder if its always possible to do the Extra casting and if it is, How I have to make to apply? Thanks for your aswers.
Try contacting Wingnut Films (PJ's company). I think that'd be your best bet.
Hi I'm fairly new here!

What do you guys think about Gerald Butler (from 300) for Bard the Bowman? Or is that completely crazy?
Not at all crazy Fimbrethil. Gerard would be a cool Bard 8-) .

[b:9s57q6e5]GB[/b:9s57q6e5]
Gerard Butler seems like he could pull off the very grim Bard quite nicely. 8-)
well...let me think...
Ian McKellen-gandalf
Andy Serkis- Gollum
david tennant (Is his name spelled right?)-Bilbo baggins
Brian Blessed-Thorin Oakenshield
Hugo Weaving- Elrond
Jason Isaacs-Thranduil
Bruce Payne- Beorn
Marc Warren- Balin
David Morrisey-Dwalin
Brendan Gleeson- Bombur
Hugh Jackman- Bard the Bowman
Isaacs would be an awesome Thranduil.

[b:35cl8mzy]GB[/b:35cl8mzy]
Isaacs, he was Lucius Malfoy wasn't he? *checks IMDb* Ah yes, he was. Dust off the blonde wig and we're good to go. 8-)
Exactamundo, Eldo. 8-)

[b:2o17xrvo]GB[/b:2o17xrvo]
He's even got practice at the villain-ish guy. And once Deathly Hallows come out we'll (probably) see a semi-redemption. The more I think about this the more Isaacs seems perfect for the role. <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' />
Ain't he a bit young? I know he's to be an elf and all, but thranduil would need a bit more gravitas. Put 10 years on him and I agree he's be perfect.

I'm gonna crawl back into my work induced hole now....I'll check back maybe near the end of April.
He's in his late 40s. I never imagined Elves looking much older than that, so I think he'd work.

BTW, I hope you come back sooner and stick around!
Apparently Tolkien DID consider that Elves might have a third stage of life (to justify the one or two bearded Elves in existence <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> ). Regardless, Isaacs is about 47, which is a perfect age for a Mature Elf to look like. Besides which he would pass marvelously as Legolas's father  .

[b:1yy37tpc]GB[/b:1yy37tpc]
I think Jason can be a good elf and very...attractive I think. and really awesome as Gandalfs Beard said!yup!but about
Richard E Grant... I think I don't like him he looks...I don't know how to describe it but...I disagree!yeah! Mr.Deltoro MUST pay attention to my opinion...(very foolish  ) I protest...aaaaaaa
I think Richard can be a good vampire  (please don't be angry with me guys... )
Grant doesn't quite look the part of Thranduil to me either Legolas.

[b:3c74u6nv]GB[/b:3c74u6nv]
Oops, I was thinking of the young draco malfoy, not the old lucius. Yes, he'd be quite good as thranduil.
I just looked up Mr. Grant and he doesn't look particularly Elvish to me. I don't know what makes it seem that way, but something seems off.
Yeah, I don't get what every poster on the first page sees in him! :?

[b:3edb5lza]GB[/b:3edb5lza]
Ian McKellen- Gandalf
Andy Serkis- Gollum
[u:1ab43t4y][i:1ab43t4y][b:1ab43t4y]Ian Holmes[/b:1ab43t4y][/i:1ab43t4y]- [/u:1ab43t4y]Bilbo Baggins
Ian McShane <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> -Thorin Oakenshield
Hugo Weaving- Elrond
Val Kilmer- Thranduil
Robbie Coltrane - Beorn
Timothy Spall- Balin
David Bamber-Dwalin
Kevin McKidd- Bard the Bowman
James Earl Jones (voice of) - Smaug
[u:2ao3pu5j][i:2ao3pu5j][b:2ao3pu5j]Ian Holmes[/b:2ao3pu5j][/i:2ao3pu5j]- [/u:2ao3pu5j]Bilbo Baggins[/quote:2ao3pu5j]

That would be Ian [i:2ao3pu5j]Holm[/i:2ao3pu5j]. <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' />
Sherlock's Older (much...much older) Brother <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> .

Val Kilmer's actually not a bad call. He's a very versatile actor and quite the Chameleon. I think he would probably pick up a British accent easily.

[b:1v5v6vsh]GB[/b:1v5v6vsh]
Oops, I was thinking of the young draco malfoy, not the old lucius.[/quote:1pui7uwc]

oh my goodness!!! draco? yeah he is good for the hobbit movie but as legolas' son...or his younger brother!

and about Mr.kilmer I should say that he's a little young for thranduil!
What about Itaril? who can play her role????? :?:
Val Kilmer is actually older than Jason Isaacs  . I like Isaacs better for the part anyway though. I like Kristin Kreuk for Itaril, don't know if she can do a British accent though. Hmmm, Emma Watson would be awesome.

[b:wmn6jwal]GB[/b:wmn6jwal]
Val Kilmer is actually older than Jason Isaacs  . [b:2dfec6ki]GB[/b:2dfec6ki][/quote:2dfec6ki]

really??? NO!!! I couldn't recognize it <img src='/images/smileys/bigsmile.gif' border='0' alt='Big Smile Smilie' /> !!!I really rather Jason than Val !
kristin is good!but Emma is really young...you know I was thinking about keira knightley...???
I like Keira Knightly 8-) , but I'm not certain about a role in The Hobbit, as she has already had great opportunities in film as a Fighting Lass.

Emma Watson is old enough now, I think:

[img:o9pfeo6i]http://gossipteen.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/emma-watson1g.jpg[/img:o9pfeo6i]

And a role as a Warrior Elf Maiden would be awesome for her.

[b:o9pfeo6i]GB[/b:o9pfeo6i]
I'm sure you all know how I feel about Itaril in general <img src='/images/smileys/vevil.gif' border='0' alt='Very Evil Smilie' /> , but I'd rather they not cast Emma Watson as her. Just about everyone is going to see the film and go "oh look, there's Hermione as an elf!" Don't believe me? Look at all the "Cedric turned into a vampire" jokes after Robert Pattinson started in Twilight.

I would hope that the characters in the Hobbit films would be able to stand on their own without connotations to other franchise.
If it helps, I'm willing to write a film script for Emma Watson. Any film script she wants!
