This is actually the same as the last predicted date, but its much sooner than I'd dared hope recently because of the MGM auction and delayed greenlight. However, if this is actually the case, it likely means the MGM situation is being resolved and/or a greenlight and approved budget will be given soon. It also means that we still have a chance at a December 2011 release date. 8-)

Yes indeedy. Ady posted a new blog confirming the story this morning. But apparently one of our members Iain)wgtn0128 (a resident of Wellington) beat bloggers to this story.

This indicates that all the rumours of delays and the casting uncertainty may just be a ploy. Jackson and DT might just be playing extremely close to the vest.

I certainly hope so, but I'm not sure the green-light talk has been lies (or, more charitably, smoke and mirrors). However, if the MGM situation is resolved soon, then I think the June date is definitely as possible as the latest stories suggest. <img src='/images/smileys/smile.gif' border='0' alt='Smile Smilie' />

But I do give local accounts higher regard than other sources. Locals are usually the first to know when films go into production as logistical arrangements for set production, security and the like must be pre-arranged.

The story makes sense to me despite the anonymous source since 3D is so lucrative. I just hope that there will be a 2D option.

I wonder how long that will take. I also noticed with Avatar that it got pulled from 2D screens well before it was from 3D screens. That's possibly because there were less 3D movies to replace it with, but the increasing trend towards 3D is discouraging me. It really doesn't add anything significant enough to movies to justify the additional cost, discomfort of the glasses, and decreased picture quality.

I wouldn't be overly concerned Eldo. There are a number of people like yourself, who have a hard time with the current 3D tech, that it wouldn't be profitable to go all 3D all the time for all movies. Though you should expect to see more Special Effects and CGI driven films going that route (but continuing to release a 2D version for shorter runs).

I expect another evolutionary step to 3D without glasses before all films go 3D. And that won't be anytime soon. Particularly as the cost of just switching to the current digital screens is so expensive. No theatre chain is going to make the switch again in less than a couple of decades.

Pre-production has been going on for years, probably because it represents less of an investment to full-fledged filming. However, since there has been talk of a green-light for some time though yet none has been given, and we're getting dangerously close to PJ's estimate for when the release date will be pushed back, I think it is reasonable to assume that something is holding stuff up.
