Folk sounds fine. A bare minimum of instruments would be excellent. The dwarves at Bag End would have the most instruments to play on, and the movie hopefully tries to use them to make the backing to "Far over the Misty Mountains." Most of the other music, I hope is low key, and the other songs I hope more based on voice than actual tunes. Please let the film music overall have a light tone, except where somberness and pathos and drama are absolutely needed. The subtle touch as a general rule please, not too many sledgehammers!

I suggest the incredible mediaeval Baebes they have been around for over 10 years a plethora of albums behind them prove they would be worthy of enriching our beloved Hobbit films!
I spoke to them recently and they would die to compose a tune for this film and they are quite able.
'American psycho' imitated their talents in the soundtrack and they are experts in updating celtic, folk and madrigal tunes I believe the marriage between the Baebes and The Shire is perfect!
6 part harmonies , talented and beautiful to look at. What more do you need?

I've never hear their music before now (listening to it on their website) despite seeing them listed on the programme at the Maryland Rennaisance Fair for a number of years, but they're pretty good. I actually find them better than my (admittedly vague) memories of the credits music for LotR. The medeival/fantasy theme certainly fits The Hobbit nicely. 
I forgot to mention The Baebes recent contribution to the BBC production of The Virgin Queen (composed by Martin Phipps) resulted in a deserved Ivor Novello award 2007 for best television soundtrack!!

I may have seen them at fairport last year, but I might be confusing them for someone else... 
They have a style and rhythmic beating of a folk band, and considering the LOTR credits were meant as the singing of the Valar, they have the feel of the dwarves misty mountains ballad, mixed with the perkiness of the shire. Unfortunately I can never part with the ''shanty'' fiddle of the LOTR 
. They seem in a good point with the folk scene, but should tone down with the special effects.

I didn't know that the LOTR credits were supposed to be the Valar; that's cool. I think folk music, at least some folk music, and fantasy just go together. I especially like your comparison with the Dwarves' music.

Are Clannad still going? They used to do the celtic thing pretty well.
I heard they were finally putting something new together last year. I think its supposed to be unplugged versions of their old material.
