MerryPip began this thread with the following post

Should i read all volumes of middle earth?

( book of lost tales 1,2, lays of belriand, shaping of middle earth, lost road and other writings, return of the shadow, treason of isengard, war of the ring, sauron defeated)

should i read them in that order? and after that, theres morgoths ring and war of the jewels-

do i read those, or just read silmarillion in its place?

and then, unfinished tales- when should i read that?

i just wanna know when to take knowlege in of middle earth, i want the right order to read them in
thanks a bunch

I would read the Silmarillion after The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Then I'd tackle the others in their numeric order, were I in need of more background info. Of course as I have not read HOME Volumes 3-12, others my have a better answer for you. Smile Smilie

but wqhen should i read "unfinished tales"? (not book of the lost tales)
Anytime you like, but it mostly covers stuff from the Sil, and the first 3 or 4 vols of HoMe, so either around the same time so it's fresh in your mind, or (if you're like me) much, much later so you don't get thoroughtly sick of Turin and friends.
I wouldn't worry so much about the'll get the whole picture after all the books anyhow, no matter which ones you read first...Smile Smilie
Is that true? I have some time left to read the Sil and UT then... Big Smile Smilie

Is HOME so important to get an insight look into Tolkien's world then? Me guessing it's not because of what you've just said and all, but should I buy it anyway? Does it look good on a bookshelf? Very Big Grin Smilie
I personally recommend reading The Sil, UT, and then Lost Tales 1 & 2 in that order. I am currently reading the HOME series. #3 is ok, but I never finished it. #'s 4 & 5 are terriffic, after that I have no idea.
