I just don't have a lot to add 
. There's TONS of great stuff in the book that didn't make it into the films. But when I read the books I have an extended film in my head, so I don't feel a need to bag on the films for not having everything in them.

I think that's a simplification of what this thread is about. However, I'm going to stop posting here for now unless I think of something on-topic to say. 
Dear GB if Pj and co had not made such a god-awful mess of adaptation we would not have the need for threads pointing out how bad they were! It's their own fault, its not like they didnt have the worlds most popular fiction book to draw upon rather than making their own up. They deserve no sympathy merely contempt for screwing it so badly.
I think "contempt" is overstating things a bit, petty. It's just a movie.
Well you know me Eldo, not one to mince words just people. Especially where my beloved LoTR is concerned.

You are quite right Odo, nothing can be done to alter the awfulness committed upon LoTR but by reminding the world of it we can but hope they learn from their mistakes and hire some real sciptwriters this time instead of giving the wife and her mate a job. Would be nice to see something that resembes the book this time. But I doubt it.

This is also the scene from all the movies combined that I dislike the most. Why Peter Jackson decided that the Witch King should be able to kill Gandalf that easily (which he would have, hadn't Rohan come) is something I don't understand, and while many of his own ideas and changes might be a bit out of place, but still ok, this one is just wrong. He kind of strips Gandalf of all his awesomeness and power right there. I prefer the book version
Anyway, golden moments! While it's not exactly a moment, the "many meetings" and "The council of Elrond" chapters are my two favourite chapters in the book, and I wish that Jackson would have dealt with them a little more thoroughly than he did. Of course, it would have taken a long time, but the stories told by different characters in those two chapters are fantastic, and I think many of them would have made good cinema.

It's not just that in PJ's version its silly Eldo, you're right, there's no reason for the Witch-King not to just smash Gandalf one in the teeth with his ludicrous mace, but PJ's version is so dull visually.
Surely one of the points to making LoTR as cinema is to visualize the wonderful descriptive prose Tolkien provides?
Compare the scenes-
'In rode the Lord of the Nazgul. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgul, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.
All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dinen.
'You cannot enter here,' said Gandalf, and the huge shadow halted. 'Go back to the abyss prepared for you! Go Back! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your master. Go!'
The Black Rider flung back his hood, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantled shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen there came a deadly laughter.
'Old fool!' he said. 'Old fool!' This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!' And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade.'
This is pure cinema -visual gold. And what does PJ give us? - a dull battlement for a setting, Gandalf sprawled on his a*se and Shadowfax sh**ting bricks and panicking! Oh why PJ why didn't you bother reading the text?!

Yup, that's some quality cinema material right there. It would have been much better if, instead of a bunch of trolls coming in after Grond breaks the gates (a scene I don't personally dislike, I think it's quite good), the Witch King would enter instead, just like Tolkien described it. Good camera positioning plus some funky effects would have made this an epic scene.

Well well, how i love old threads and bygone fossils of members here! Resurrecting old forum here. My golden moments would be plentiful, but at least one of my favorites is when Imrahil rallies the defenders of the White Tree with his bravery and valour. Instead of Pippin's ridiculous ’they called us out to fight’ skit, they should of had Imrahil kicking orcs from the walls with his knights. Check that, they should of had Imrahil in the adaptions. Instead of one orc slaying three so called guards of the citadel pj should of had a huge view of a ’real’ battle, with Mumakil's ramming into the walls and siege towers crumbling down into oblivion. Gandalf and Imrahil and co. shots would of increased the value of the scene. Orcs destroying thr defenders would make the scene virtually impossible because the overrun mode would of really killed Gandalf because he can't be everywhere at once thus making the film chapter obsolete and contrary to siege warfare. In the film of rotk, Gandalf kickes sirius black, but a one man army....? Well the Magnificent Seven is the only other name for it.
