You translated the whole thing yourself? Wow! How long did it take? Cool Smilie
The translations suck.....english is much much better!

Anyway, I thought that if there's no one to do this, I might as well give it a shot! So I translated it and now I'm arranging it!
Wow, that's some feat, bugyfeanor. Welcome to Planet Tolkien. I'm sure you'll fit in just great here.
Hey, I'm back. First: it took me 4-5 months for the translation, but it's taking much-much more to arrange it, Peredhil!
Second: thanks for the warm welcome, Valedhelgwath! I really appreciate it! I'm sure I'll fit in!
Last (but not least): Aule, I agree! The English version is much better, but you have to understand, as a Tolkien fan, my desire to share this masterpiece with the others! And the only way I can do that is translating it!

P.S.: Unfortunately, Tolkien's work started to be published in Romania just a few years ago, so ...
Wow that's amazing Bugyfeanor! Such dedication! You'll fit in here for sure! Big Smile Smilie *
welcomes Bugyfeanor with open arms*
Welcome to our forum Bugyfeanor. Happy Elf Smilie

I think the only reason the English version is better is because that is the language in which it was originally written and as such Professor Tolkien a easier time in selecting the correct word to fit the occasion than someone trying to translate it.

Also I have been told, myself being limited to only one language, that many of Tolkien's descriptive names (such as those of the hobbits and such) also require changing to their counterparts in the another language. This is because the books were translated from Westron to English and English isn't the direct equivalent of Westron.
I'm quite sure if the hobbits saw the english (or in thier case maybe the quenya/sindarin) version they would roll their eyes and say, "it is SO much better the way Bilbo orignially wrote it!", just like we do. Wink Smilie
Elen sila lumenn omentielvo!

Just wanted to say that I'm working on the 11th chapter now and that Silm is great!
I love re-re-re-re...-reading it!

And Bugy Feanor good job.You can make money by selling the translation but i'm sure that wasn't the main reason you did it.

Thank you, Asteroth! You're right, it wasn't the money: I don't care if people believe me or not ... I just LOVED this book! Best one ever written, if you ask me! Unfortunately, I'm a little short of time now, so I'm still on chapter 11!

I can hardly wait for other opinions or even advises!

Namarie!
Mae govannen!

I just found out today that Silmarillion has been published! I can hardly wait to buy it and see how well was translated. I sincerely hope it is well done; Eru knows it's worthy!
I'll be back with more info once I get the Book!

Namarie!
I agree with Tolkien when he said that he did not like the translation of LoTR in Swedish......Neither do I....’ke something and Britt something suck....they are lousy in translation.....and if Tolkien said that it was no good then it was nooooo good......stupid translators.....
Yeah, but I'm still waiting to read the book before I jump to some conclusions! I really hope it will be OK!

Namarie!

P.S.: I'm sorry if the Swedish translation wasn't so good, Aule; what can I say? The original is always the best!

You may put your link in our ad section with no problems raptor, getting it on our links page will take more work. Happy Elf Smilie
Well, it's great to learn that you made your own Tolkien site Raptor!
By the way, some Tolkien names sound so Romanian: Nazgul, Morgul... don't they? Smile Smilie
What do u mean by that, Eryan? Are u talking about the ending -ul or the words themselves?

Namarie!
About the ending "ul", I do not know whether the words themselves have some meaning in Romanian. I know it only a very little. I once had an ambition to learn it, but I was not patient enough! Smile Smilie
Well, Eryan, you're Polish, right? The ending sounds Romanian, yes, but I'm afraid that's where the comparison stops! Yet I myself always found the similarity between 'Mordor' and 'murder' (in pronunciation, that is!) striking! What do you think?

It is not so striking if you pronunce it correct (the way Gandalf says it in the movies, Movie-Frodo says it wrong. It's not easy unless you are used to say r that way). The Norwegian word "morder" = murderer however is simular both in writing and pronaunication. Wink Smilie

I think the Norwegian translation of the Sil, the Hobbit and Lotr are really good. They have really put in a lot of effort to get the words to look, sound, mean and feel right. Thank you!!
I Love You Smilie
Yes Bugy for me "Mordor" was always similar to "Murder"!
Amarie, the Romanian language is pretty simple in pronounciation, if I come to think of it: with a few exceptions, we say words just the way we write them (or is it the other way around?)! So, Mordor is M O R D O R, while the English 'murder' would be M U R D E R! To better understand this, imagine that we don't have any troubles saying 'Sauron' as they do in the movies, not S O R O N, as the English version would sound!

Anyway, I was just comparing the words: both their form and pronounciation! I find the similarity interesting!

Namarie!
I know what Bugyfeanor's saying(cause duh!I'm romanian too Big Smile Smilie ):our language is phonetic(or smth like this):there are no differences between writing and pronounciation:for example you can't pronounce 'Eriador' corectly by reading each letter separatly in english -try it.Smile SmilieWell, we can.So if we say Mordor or M-O-R-D-O-R it sounds exactly the same.I guess this is what you were saying, right? And,Eryan,I have to admit that words as 'nazgul',for instance, sound pretty familiar.

Well, the Silmarillion hit the stores, and I'll buy it this week-but,unfortunatly,the cover is not a very good one,I have to say...
Yes, that's what I was trying to say!

Who is that on the cover? Could it be Turin (the black sword, the fire behind etc.)? What can u tell me, raptor?

Namarie!
Yes-well,you see,I'm not quite a fan of brothers Hildebrandt....so...and the writing is somewhat blured,so it gives a slight unpleasant impression...well,who whows, maybe it's just me.Still,I say they could've easily done better.

So, what was the verdict on the translation?
Vee, I find the translation more than satisfactory, a good to very good category, I'd say! There were some things that could've been managed a bit better (mostly words and names that made me think more of the Prince Charming fairy tales than of Tolkien's world), but apart from those, it was very true to the original, hardly as it is with such a complex work!
