Thread: Movies?

In relation to the thread about the Silmarrillion as a movie I can't help but wonder would the tales make a better tv series somewhat like Hercules and Xena. I mean the format would give the characters room to develop, would allow characters that come up in different situations to reappear as required and if developed properly could follow the timeline as laid down in the book. On the other hand are audiences ready for all the flawed characters they would meet?
In my opinion, I really don't think that The Silmarillion would translate well into any other form of media. As it is, the published version is based heavily on the version Tolkien wrote in the 1930's even though he continued to work on it until he passed away. I believe the reason Christopher Tolkien choose that version to publish was that it was the most complete version extant. Unfortunately, while it is a version that's very coherent, it's not terribly detailed (as are some of the verions of the stories Tolkien wrote - the Narn for example).

I dunno, I think it'd be a bad idea to try and translate The Silmarillion to film whether it be a theater release or television series. There are too many variables to address in writing a screenplay and I'm not sure very many people would be up to the challenge.

Perhaps a Beren & L’thien series starring Kevin Sorbo as Beren and Lucy Lawless as L’thien could have a bright future.
