Thread: BEREN AND LUTHIEN (SCENE ONE)

Bottom of Page    Message Board > The Silmarillion > BEREN AND LUTHIEN (SCENE ONE)
I'm no screenwriter, but I reckon if we just get SCENE ONE done, we can then move on to SCENE TWO.

What I suggest is, come up with a SCENE ONE (not too long!) and post it. If we end up with a few versions, then we can have a vote - choose our favorite - then move on to the next SCENE.

Any discussion should go on the ADAPTATION thread, I think.

Just scripts here please. If you like someone else SCENE ONE but want to suggest revisions, just rewrite the SCENE the way you want and post it. This will just give us more choices.

Obviously, if you decide to have a crack, don't be too precious about your text! This is meant to be serious - yes, serious fun!

NO DISCUSSIONS THIS THREAD.

Any takers?

See my last post in adaptation <img src='/images/smileys/wink.gif' border='0' alt='Wink Smilie' /> . If you or Tinuviel like the sequence, feel free to script it.

ok :? here it goes....

Scene 1:
Wide shot of a thick forest with mountains. Bird's eye view. See birds flying swiftly above the canopy, camera zooms in on birds. Camera drops into the forest.See what they are following. A band of orcs are rampaging through the forest, as if they're running from something. Zoom in on one who stops breifly and looks around the forest floor. When it appears to be safe, he calls for the band to halt.
Skip to later when they have a camp set up and they're eating around a camp fire and loudly talking and screeching. Camera focuses on a bird sitting in a tree. It's a finch. THe orcs take no notice of it. The bird flies away up to the side of a hill and perches in a tree. It begins to sing, as if talking. Directly bellow the bird we see a man. He's young, though looks aged from months of traveling. He seems to understand what the bird was saying, for he looks down the hill and sees a small fire in the distance.
The man then makes himself comfortable on the ground and waits there for nightfall, dozing off.

As his eyes close, switch to when Barahir and his men are returning from some battle in Dorthonion. One man says farewell to the others and makes his way toward a bleak looking cottage in the distance. As he gets closer, he sees that it was burned. He begins to run toward it, and once he reaches it he falls to the ground and yells in despair. His house has been burned and ransacked and his wife gone. After weeping for a while, he gets up and runs frantically through the forest to where Barahir and his men are camped.
Barahir seeing him stands up immidiately with a worried expression on his face.
Barahir: Gorlim, what's wrong?
Gorlim: (gasping) My wife! my sweet Eilinel! She's gone! and my house burned! ( he falls to the ground)
Barahir: (angered) Orcs. Sauron must be searching for us. Me must go to Tarn Aeluin before he picks up our trail. We leave at first light.
Gorlim: (weeping) But my wife, Barahir! What about my Eilinel? what if she is still alive?
Barahir: My friend, I know you loved her, but orcs show no mercy nor chivelry. She is more likely to be dead rather than held prisoner. Come. Have some drink and food. You could use some right now.
Gorlim gets up and they walk over toward the fire.

Beren wakes up and the sun has almost set over the trees. He grabs his belt and sword and straps them on, then slings his quiver over his shoulder with his bow and arrows. He slips off into the forest unseen.
PROLOGUE and VOICE-OVER showing Morgoth’s forces fighting and burning in Dorthonion. Barahir finally flees with twelve companions to Tarn Aeluin in the highland moors. Morgoth instructs Sauron to find and destroy Barahir and his companions. (Good chance to show them with Morgoth on his throne and Sauron in Maia form). The forgoing dealt with in a series of shots with voice-over explaining what can’t be made obvious in the shots.

SCENE ONE:
Barahir and his men are returning weary and bedraggled from some raid in Dorthonion.
Gorlim leaves unseen by the others who make camp, and he makes down into an open forest and approaches a bleak looking cottage in the distance. As he gets closer, he sees that it is burnt but still standing. He runs toward it, and once he looks within, falls to the ground and yells in despair. His wife is gone. After weeping for a while, he gets up and runs frantically through the forest and back up into the high moors to where Barahir and his men are camped by the lake. Barahir seeing him stands up immediately with a worried expression on his face.

BARAHIR: Gorlim, what's wrong?
GORLIM: (gasping) My wife! my sweet Eilinel! She's gone! and my house burned! (Looks desperately at Barahir).
BARAHIR: (angered) Orcs. Sauron must be searching for us. We must hope he hasn't picked up our trail. We leave at first light.
GORLIM: (weeping) But my wife, Barahir! What about my Eilinel? What if she is still alive?
BARAHIR: (sadly) My friend, the orcs show no mercy. If she lives and is held prisoner, even then we cannot save her! Come. Have some drink and food.
(Falls silent and walks over to the fire with Gorlim reluctantly following him).

Switch to them sleeping. Gorlim wakes up, and looking wild eyed and desperate, sneaks off into the darkness.
Scene X

Beren and Luthien enter with crowd following behind them. Beren's hand is hidden in his cloak and the other is holding Luthien's hand.
Thingol rises in his seat
Thingol: So Beren son of Barahir, it seems my ears have decieved me, for I heard that you had perished. Glad I am to see you breathing, but disturbed by the woes you bring with you.
Beren: I return according to my word.
Thingol: Really? Then what of your quest, and of your vow?
Beren: Fulfilled. Even now a silmaril is in my hand.
Thingol rises from seat
Thingol: Show it to me then.
Beren releases Luthien's hand and opens his palm. There is nothing. Thingol looks at him questioningly.
Thingol: Well, what is this? Is there some spell upon the jewel or have you decieved me?
Beren: No, Lord.
[i:21l7enau]Beren pulls arm out of cloak. Hand is gone[/i:21l7enau]
Beren: It is in my hand, but not in this room. And therefore let me be called Camlost, the Empty-Handed. Please, allow me to explain so I may come to claim what I now own.
[i:21l7enau]Thingol motions for them to sit. They tell of their tale and of Carcharoth. Thingol aroused from thought looks at Beren with pity and understanding[/i:21l7enau]
Thingol: I was wrong about you Beren Camlost. You are among the greater men of Arda and unlike the rest. Forgive me for my crudeness, for I knew not of what you have accomplished.
Beren: There is noting to forgive lord, but perhaps your end of the bargain shall be upheld? For my love for Luthien transcends all that have ever existed, and I promise her no pain or sorrow as long as I live and into the life that comes after.
[i:21l7enau]Thingol looks to Luthien[/i:21l7enau]
Luthien: I love this man more than my own life and grace. I beg thee to allow us to be wed in front of your throne, father, and for you to uphold your end of the bargain. I love this man
Thingol: Very well. Let their be joy and jubilance, and let Beren Camlost, son of Barahir, take his Luthien Tinuviel's hand in marriage before the throne of her father.
